Makes sense, a bunch of stuff on twitter is broken. We’ve had embedded twitter feeds (most recent 2 or 3 posts) on our work websites for years and they broke that functionality in June. I guess they didn’t want the extra traffic from website embeds?
“Hong Kong is fine” says the white western woman, between sips of kombucha. She clicks the “buy now” button on Amazon… this “eat the rich” bumper sticker will look great on her Yaris.
Nah it’s just a few shit instances that are the problem. Lemmy World and Feddit De immediately come to mind as other shit instances that never have anything to say. Last update added instance blocking for posts but IMO there needs to be a blocklist for commenters too.
The fundamental problem in Taiwanese democracy is if the opposition wins one election, they merge with the mainland - it means the ruling party can do whatever they want and still get votes.
Shockingly, the US would not be given a say and would be left to react. Which means the entire thing becomes a blood bath if the US doesn't prevent it prior.
The US wields immense geopolitical power; of course they get a say. That’s not to say that it could prevent an annexation if the CCP wanted it badly enough, but Washington has no shortage of levers to pull to make it as unattractive an option as possible.
It’s absolutely unsubstantiated. I’m just aware that the US does that quite a lot, especially to proxies such as Taiwan. They’re a strategic trading partner. So I’d be surprised if the US wasn’t involved in getting that party elected somehow.
Whines and claims to have been attacked and makes another unsubstantiated claim to back up the pretense.
Keep on following it. Surely some folk have not caught on yet!
Are you going to take part of a comment out of context and act all offended next ?
Eh; I can trigger 429 errors that log me out of the service by just keeping the page open. I’m not sure of anyone is supposed to keep using the service for free in any official capacity.
Both sides are frustratingly stupid. Both sides are doing absolutely vile and inhumane things. Both sides will never stop because both sides are fucking stupid
We need the global community to step in and remove both natenyahu and Abbas and give the younger generation, who are not so hateful towards each other a chance to coexist together
Abbas is not the leader of Hamas. I actually really appreciate his take on current events. He said he condemns the death of civilians and calls for the release of the kidnapped prisoners.
But keep in mind that Hamas murdered all the Palestinian officials and officers in Gaza back in 2006-2008, they are not so friendly to each other.
It’s going to take more than the removal of the problem. It’s been a constant problem with the United States and friends that they all just figure. Go in take out the top guy. And much of the infrastructure Bingo Bongo everyone that was repressed is now suddenly free to have a decent life. With no infrastructure and no leadership. When the problem itself really remains and still has the infrastructure to build an intensity again.
The only real answer is to give them a path to properly be part of society and feel they have a stake in it. That is the one thing that makes people less resentful and less likely to try to destroy said society. And that’s going to take generations of dedication. Not just removing Netanyahu unfortunately.
Some cliff notes for those wondering what the fuss is about:
In 2011, three nuclear reactors in Fukushima went into meltdown and released radioactive contamination into the environment, including oceanwater
The facilities remain flooded with a volume of contaminated water that has been described as "500 Olympic-sized pools"
As part of the ongoing effort to clean up Fukushima, Japan wants to eventually remove all of the remaining contaminated water
Japan’s plan to do this involves reducing the radioactivity of the water using a filtration process known as ALPS while staging out water releases over a period of 30 years
The main remaining contaminant in the water following ALPS filtration is expected to be Tritium, which samples show as existing within the threshold that is considered safe for human consumption.
This plan was approved by the UN after determining that the radiological impact would be "negligible"
China and South Korea both oppose the plan. Wang Wenbin, a spokesman for the the Chinese Foreign Ministry was quoted calling the plan “extremely selfish and irresponsible” and stated that "The ocean is humanity’s common good, not Japan’s private sewer"
Concerns over Tritium release have been criticized, as other active reactors in the region are known to release similar levels of the substance into the ocean (e.g.: those at the Yangjiang nuclear plant), though it is also worth noting that this criticism hinges upon the assumption that the ALPS filtration process will be as reliable as early results suggest. It requires trusting that Japan will be completely diligent in overseeing their filtration efforts so that radioactive Cesium is not released into oceanwater.

I assume it’s to help people visualize volume/distance/size/etc. If an article said “50,000 gallons”, it would be much more precise, but also harder to relate to. When an article says “500 Olympic-sized pools”, it’s significantly easier to picture in my mind.
It’s also worth remembering that this is a newspaper intended for the casual edification of the general public, not a scientific document.
The Shenzhen frenzy dovetails with Hong Kong residents’ growing willingness to work and live in mainland China. A survey of people under 40 in the city by the Hong Kong-Guangdong Youth Association conducted last year found 66% of them are now open to employment across the border, tripling from 22% in 2020.
China genocided HKs culture so that more ppl stop realizing how bad cummunism is
Travel to the mainland has been made more compelling by new infrastructure that cut travel times in half between the cities, a booming array of entertainment choices and low prices
But he added the integration could raise questions about the city’s identity
B-but what about… checks notes… Hong Kong’s unique identity of overpriced goods and services 😢
