What are some of the harmful things that he’s attached his name to? I’m out of the loop…

The real singers were two men and a woman, if I recall correctly…

Scientists may have solved the mystery behind transporting some of the materials to the pyramid site: a dried-up a river

Fixed the title for you.

The construction of the Giza pyramids is still baffling. Some of the stones are purported to weigh 80 tons. That’s four or five times more weight than what modern trucks can pull on paved roads.

It’s not so farfetched to presume that this ancient civilization employed technology that is lost to time. I’m not talking about aliens and laser beams, but good ol’ fashioned mathematics. They could have exploited a principle of leverage and incline that we simply don’t understand or recognize. Or perhaps something entirely different from our six simple machines

The problem with this theory, of course, is that we like to believe that humanity is always progressing and that we are superior to our forebears by default. That is ultimately a subjective opinion.

Haagel ,

Yes. I’m familiar with this image. Some scientists claim that when just the right amount of water is poured over sand it reduces the friction by about 30%.

Some also claim that there were not hundreds of thousands of laborers at the Giza pyramids, based on evidence discovered in the work camps near the site.

I’m 38 years old and I think I’ve read about a new theory every year of my life…

Haagel ,

“The study was done by Christian Wagner and colleagues at Saarland University in Germany, along with researchers in the Netherlands, Iran and France. The team was inspired by an ancient Egyptian wall painting showing a huge statue being hauled across the sand on a sledge in about 1800 BC. The painting has a detail that has long puzzled Egyptologists: a worker who appears to be pouring water onto the sand in front of the sledge while others appear to be carrying water to replenish his supply.”

physicsworld.com/…/did-slippery-sand-help-egyptia…

There are hundreds of articles about this theory. It was all the rage a few years ago.

Haagel ,

Again, there are hundreds of articles about the adjacent work camps. Please look at the publications of Zahi Hawass, chief archeologist of Egypt, and Amihai Mazar, a professor of archeology in Jerusalem.

Most claim that there could have been up to ten thousand workers. Some claim that the number of workers was as low as 1600.

Haagel ,

I never suggested that they couldn’t.

Personally, I don’t think that the “brute force” argument is the best. I think it’s arguing from ignorance.

Haagel ,

They also depict gods with the heads of jackals and birds, beings from other planets, their conception of the afterlife, pornography, and obviously exaggerated claims about the power and influence of the Pharoahs.

I’m saying that we should be skeptical. dubitante omnibus, as Descartes would say…

Haagel ,

Yeah, I remember this guy. He claimed that Stonehenge in England could have been built like this. The pyramids of Giza are much more complex, of course. Still, I think it’s entirely possible that the pyramids were built using very clever engineering principles that were forgotten and that we don’t need because we have cranes and power tools and hydraulics, etc.

Haagel ,

I don’t know, my friend. I’m not an archeologist or Egyptologist. I’m just an enthusiast who has read a dozen conflicting theories.

Haagel ,

Source? I’m not doubting you. I’m just surprised that the government would limit research, probably for political reasons.

Haagel ,

I’ve also heard of this. It seems to me that this theory should be easy to confirm with some sort x-ray or radar or lidar or something, so that we can see the shape of the structure beneath the superficial layers…

Haagel ,

I swear that I’m not trying to be obtuse, but I have a lot of doubts.

What kind of ropes and wooden sleds, manufactured in 4000 BC, can move 80 ton stones? There are tensile limits…

Sticky trick: new glue spray kills plant pests without chemicals (www.theguardian.com)

The insect glue, produced from edible oils, was inspired by plants such as sundews that use the strategy to capture their prey. A key advantage of physical pesticides over toxic pesticides is that pests are highly unlikely to evolve resistance, as this would require them to develop much larger and stronger bodies, while bigger...

Haagel ,

All jokes aside, this is another great example of a trend towards bio-inspired engineering.

Haagel ,

Isn’t that Lamarckism? If I recall correctly, that’s an older model of evolution that is not commonly recognized anymore.

“Right near the beach… BOYEE!”

Archaeologists identify the birthplace of the mysterious Yamnaya (www.economist.com)

Yet they and their descendants would go on to transform Europe and much of Asia genetically, culturally and linguistically. Among the many innovations that these steppe migrants ushered in, scientists believe, are the Indo-European languages that are dominant in Europe today, and which are spoken by nearly half of humanity....

Haagel ,

What is the irony? That Europeans are now stereotypically parochial?

Haagel ,

The discovery of horizontal gene transfer implies that it’s more like a web than a tree.

"Biologist Johann Peter Gogarten suggests “the original metaphor of a tree no longer fits the data from recent genome research” therefore “biologists should use the metaphor of a mosaic to describe the different histories combined in individual genomes and use the metaphor of a net to visualize the rich exchange and cooperative effects of HGT among microbes”.

I look forward to this dinosaur = chicken colloquialism being inevitably discarded.

Haagel ,

Not just microbes. HGT has been observed in carnivorous plants as well. It could be much more prevalent than we think.

Haagel ,

Here’s an example of a corporation demonstrating positive socio-economic change:

The Basque Country’s Mondragón Corporation is the globe’s largest industrial co-operative, with workers paying for the right to share in its profits – and its losses.

I grew up in Silicon Valley and I can testify what you already know: venture capitalists and tech CEOs are just dumb kids with a lot of money. Many of them landed in their positions by chance alone. We are not obliged to give them more credence than anybody else.

Haagel ,

Serious question: is x = my + b also a slope intercept? Why is it only calculated via the y axis?

Haagel ,

What is so bad about living with your parents? That’s still the norm in many parts of the world. For some reason western countries, and especially America, have exaggerated the benefits of being financially independent, as if shared resources were some kind of failure.

I beg to differ. The only people who lose when we share resources are the capitalists.

I’ve got a few friends in their thirties who live with their parents and the whole family is very happy. And although my kids are only six and three, I can’t imagine any reason why I wouldn’t want them to continue living in my house for as long as they needed support.

We all need support. It’s not a shame. It’s an asset more valuable than property, imho.

Haagel ,

Did that happen to you?

Haagel ,

Israel is surrounded by a burgeoning bevy of enemies. The jets are for their defense against Iran and others.

I condemn the Biden administration’s indiscriminate support of Israel.

Haagel ,

If by “we” you mean America then I would say that America gets an ally right in the heart of the Arab world, which is frequently opposed to American ideologies. The strategic location is enough to justify the American government’s investment in Israel because it facilitates the US foreign policy, for better or for worse.

I’m not defending their’s or Israel’s actions. I’d just like to remind everyone that the whole region is tense and complex. It has always been. Oversimplification of the issues leads to even more conflict, in my opinion.

Haagel ,

OK. I apologize for treating this like a multifaceted issue.

Haagel ,

That’s exactly my point. Israel is a US military base, from which it conducts a variety of operations in the region. It is very valuable to US foreign policy.

Unfortunately the Biden administration has accepted that sponsoring genocide is a fair price to pay in exchange for that advantageous position in the middle east.

Haagel ,

You seem to know a lot about US military activity. Which branch are you in?

Haagel ,

That’s how extremism spreads…

Haagel ,

So what do you think is the reason why the US is giving so much advanced weaponry to Israel?

Haagel ,

I never trusted the stuff. We use to say this matter-of-factly when I was a kid, about thirty years ago. I’m glad to see that my unfounded confidence and speculation turned out to be right!

Haagel ,

Damn. I’ve got the Mountain Dew drinkers riled up.

“Possibly causes cancer” is sufficient for me to never the touch the stuff. Please stop drinking these things. They’re literally addictive.

Haagel ,

Probably stepping down to sit on the board instead.

Haagel ,

My son is about the same age as the boy in the thumbnail, being held by his father. They look pretty similar too.

I can’t even imagine the pain and anger that I would feel to see my boy injured, what to speak of being killed, by militant forces. I would be absolutely beside myself with rage. It’s really no wonder this conflict has continued for generations. There are thousands of people on both sides who have become absolutely fixated on revenge.

Haagel ,

I’m aware of the difference in motivation. My point is that people on both sides become radicalized by violence and therefore the cycle repeats with every generation.

Please remember that innocent Israeli kids were also murdered, albeit in smaller numbers.

Haagel ,

There was a time when Muslim empires were powerful. Their so-called “golden age” from about 750 to 1250 ad produced so much of the culture, science and philosophy that we benefit from today.

Obviously there has been a dangerously conservative shift in recent centuries, and especially during the reform in the 70s.

I wish that “returning to former glory” meant reviving their intellectual prowess.

Haagel ,

I was homeless for a year and I must admit that I learned and grew so much. The freedom and detachment is cathartic. It’s like a drug, however, in that you’re likely to lose yourself if you stay in that environment for too long.

Haagel ,

Yes. It wasn’t a uniquely German trend, although they applied it the most and thereby killed millions. The Americans also have their own gruesome history of human eugenics.
