Don’t forget about capacitance. Longer distances == more capacitance to charge up on state transitions. This wastes power and puts a ceiling on how quickly you can switch.

It seems every new shiny technology today tries its darndest to short-circuit 40+ years of advances in OS virtual memory design. Between Electron and Docker, the entire idea of loading an image into memory once and sharing its pages among hundreds of processes is basically dead. But at least there’s lower support burden!!!1111

Except each container has its own libc and any other dependencies. If any linked binary or library has a different inode, it gets loaded separately. I would say it is indeed quite similar, even if the images in question here aren’t hundreds of megabytes in size like with Electron.

“Different inode” means a different file entirely, not necessarily its majorminor:inode tuple resolved through bind mounts/overlayFS/whatever. I’m saying that if you have containers using even slightly different base images, you effectively have n copies of libc in memory at once on the same system, which does not happen when you do not use containers.

Except wind and solar don’t have anywhere near the density we need. Nuclear plants are about 1kW/m^2. Wind is 2-3W/m^2, solar is 100W/m^2. Siting wind and solar projects can be just as damaging.

What else does it mean, CSP? I’d love to see more CSP projects, but it’s not where most of the investment is. Wind, as I’ve pointed out, is even less space-efficient than solar. And geothermal also isn’t seeing the same investment dollars. It should. Tidal power is interesting, but good luck with the fishing lobby. My state has the first commerical offshore wind farm in the US, and it continues to receive significant backlash from the fishing industry. This isn’t nearly as invasive as tidal might be.

And this is to ignore the elephant in the room, that without nuclear, we will not get away from fossil fuels soon enough. We don’t have the technology to solve the base load problem with renewables yet. Making plans based on some assumed cadence of progress is a recipe for disaster. Storage is a hard problem, and batteries are such a dirty, shitty technology.

Way to ad hominem. You’re part of the problem of people not taking actual hateful language seriously. Most people do not want to be offensive, but being told every single day that something they said offends n=1 group of people will cause them to begin to tune it all out.

Those who are against iOS and Apple in general, have you tried their devices lately?

I am dissapointed in my peers. For years I have always been told to stay away from Apple devices and the company in general. However, no one who said that actually used their devices, or used them but not recently (some had like iPhone 4s in the past). Their knowledge was always based on some 3rd hand impressions or internet...

On Mac OS you can run whatever you want.

For now. I really think Apple has been letting the entire macos experience decay on purpose. Then, they’ll release a self-hosting xcode for iPad and old yeller the mac for good, as I am sure they have been dreaming of for years.

I used to have everything backed up to a 2TB USB drive. Which I accidentally dropped down the stairs. I lost thousands of family photos and documents. That changed my backup perspective.

If it’s the only copy, it’s not a backup. It’s the master.

This scares the crap out of me. My daughter’s mother and I both went to the same preschool, where phonics was drilled into our heads from age three. Our 4-year-old daughter is now learning how to read, and she is not learning phonics. We are taking upon ourselves to make sure that she is exposed to phonics as much as possible this summer before school tries to hopelessly mangle her reading skills. I’ve already noticed her pointing out text and saying what they say, but it’s obvious she just looked at context clues like a picture to figure it out and didn’t actually read it.

Maybe, but I find it more likely to be true than false. My overarching takeaway is that if you actually care about the secrecy of a communication, don’t use signal, use gpg.

The real fear is the embrace extend extinguish. IE if meta encourages people to join their instance, then gradually makes things incompatible after major communities move to them

Kind of like how Facebook Messenger (and GChat, and AIM) used to federate with XMPP, and then dropped it like a bad habit once their platform took off.
