They keep printing quality of their other products and it’s great. The price is propably a gift to community and/or some soft of advertisment.

Idea: fediverse of ecommerce. Time to dethrone amazon and ebay. What do you think?

Buying from an alternative ecommerce site usually sucks: you have to register for every website, enter your address, payment information and other information, they may leak data or store it improperly, you may not know the reputation of the website or business, you can’t easily compare products with other vendors and more....

smileyhead ,

There are better ideas to do the same, such as GNU Taler, that could be incorporated into existing Internet infractructure, work locally and be more environment friendly.

smileyhead ,

I think having your own store you control, like with WooCommerce, is enough.

What we need is more freedom respecting payment system and the closest thing I saw someone is working on is GNU Taler.

smileyhead ,

Don’t forget propably relaying on old IPv4. ICANN domain space and DNS, IANA addressing space…

smileyhead ,

That I shouldn’t care as much about installed packages I no longer use. Sure, going through installed programs and cleaning up from time to time is ok, but no need to panic if something sticks around.

Especially when I installed something manually needing dependencies for programming, I tend to write down names of installed packages and then managing it manually, because I wasn’t yet aware what their names mean. Now using same OS for over a year, heavly testing stuff, having multiple desktop enviroments and not cleaning it up my system partition is taking less than 30GB, compared to 1TB disk it’s nothing.

smileyhead ,

All it is needed is to have at least equivalents of basic apps from F-Droid and we’re getting there.

Propietary apps for accessing one smart toilet seat brand or some trash locked down social platform should be abandoned anyway.

smileyhead ,

They shouldn’t be used, not on Android, not on the web, not on Linux. We should not show companies, banks and our goverment that we are capable of giving up our freedom for some convience.

Maybe if I’ll be doing buissness and need to do multiple money transfers a day I’ll be using their web apps on a computer, but as I am individual person, I give friends cash and pay online via other methods.

smileyhead ,

Git is decentralized, but services like GitHub/GitLab/Gitea/SourceHut are adding things like issue board, pull requests, planners… Those are historically only on the platform and it needs to be decentralized too, because not every project wants to use biggest platform like GitHub or host something themselfs, while contributors and users don’t want to have multiple accounts for multiple forges.

smileyhead ,

Fingers crossed it’s going to be compatible with what ForgeFed is working hard for years 🤞.

Gitea/Forgejo/Codeberg have ongoing work implementing this.

smileyhead ,

I’d rather spend my time learning how computer and operating systems works instead of spending time learning how to avoid Windows roadblocks.

smileyhead ,

They don’t have to ask for cookies permission, just like they don’t have to ask for sending you JavaScript code (but should) or CSS styles. What they have to do is ask for permission for collecting personal data or sending it to third-parties. That’s all.

Meta is pulling the plug on Messenger Lite on Android (www.theverge.com)

tl;dr: Messenger Lite, Meta’s “less than 10MB to download” lightweight version of Messenger, will no longer be available on Android after Sep 18, as Meta redirects users to the Messenger app. The main Messenger app will also drop SMS support next month.

smileyhead ,

Would like to recommend Beeper but not until they free their apps.

smileyhead ,

Thanks, now I don’t need to say it myself.

smileyhead ,

What’s with FSF? If it’s free software and SaaSS, there is no “forcing” by their words.

Meta discontinues Messenger Lite for Android, it will be unavailable after Sep 18. Users need to install regular Messenger app instead (beehaw.org)

I have not found any news article on this on a whim. Because my friends and family, I need to use Facebook Messenger, and Messenger Lite was a OK client - lightweight, no unnecessary features, etc., compared to the regular Messenger app....

Not me

smileyhead ,

I just like to be proud of improving digital space around me

smileyhead ,

Why still use Facebook when we have the Internet?

smileyhead ,

The only and I say the only good thing I can say about Facebook Messenger is… umm…

Can somebody name at least one thing? Really, this app is shit but we must find one at least.

smileyhead ,

Because we have standards for at least 20 years for messaging I think we can’t say that networking effect is upside of some app, but rather the fact that everyone must use the same app is a downside.

smileyhead ,

It isn’t. Adding someone is always digging through people with the same name and searching for “that one with glasses on profile picture”. There are some codes to scan, but they are Facebook’s custom format incompatible with QR code scanners and inconvinient to use.

smileyhead ,

I still buy DVDs and am happy. Cheap and super easy to play or archive due to ripping software being legal in my country.

The only way to buy big movies these days.

smileyhead ,

Design: best Advertisment: best User experience: best Reliability: best Privacy from propietary crap in app store: best Privacy from Apple: non existing User freedom: worst

smileyhead ,

There are short term solutions and they are long term solutions.

If your relationship is abusive, you can try to fix it but after years of no effect it’s better to prepare for new one. It’s a tool, no feelings for it. Don’t get abused by silly thing like a operating system brand.

smileyhead ,

I changed the logo to this one on my Linux computer.

smileyhead ,

All four examples requires web browser to download additional software in a form of scripts bundled into the website. And three of them all propietary apps, so it’s better to refure their use.

Don’t really know why they build them this way, browsers can send and recieve files without it via POST and GET methods, why requiering additional JavaScript?

smileyhead ,

It’s targetting only the biggest platforms and there is nothing in EU taking control.

smileyhead ,

Matrix is getting better on fast peace, we need to give it another yew years to fix biggest holes I guess.

ActivityPub based chat is going to suck much. Like basing chat on RSS or FTP, it can be done but why. Unless we’re talking just about replicating Instagram-like DMs then maybeee? But I still would like to just add link to Matrix in bio instead of having chat in yet another place.

smileyhead ,

Yes, it does not protect metadata great. It is visible that you and your interlocutor are talking together and when.

But noone figured out how to prevent that in federated systems. You rather have less metadata in centralized place for everyone or more metadata but only for small subset of people.

smileyhead ,

I think it is to just replicate Instagram DMs.

smileyhead , (edited )

I am torn up 🤷.

On one hand I just want one standard NOW and am sick of hunderds of apps. On the other hand it is just a Pixelfed client with other view, like DeltaChat is to email.

Edit: fix typo

smileyhead ,

Try to use something that’s something other than iOS or Android with Google services.

(I’m daily driving deGoogled Android, I can live, but just can get sick of all the pressure around world is taking on not having Google Play Store)

"Automated Racism": China's Hikvision still sells Uyghur-tracking surveillance cameras, powered by America's Nvidia (ipvm.com)

Despite assurances for years that Hikvision has stopped minority analytics, just 7 months ago local PRC authorities awarded a $6 million contract that explicitly requires Hikvision analytics to identify Uyghurs (维族), powered by NVIDIA hardware, security specialist IPVM says.

smileyhead ,

A reason why you should never give Internet access to those shitty cameras.

smileyhead ,
  1. This could be fixed if phones could let us relock the bootloader, but with our own keys.

Then only possible way to unlock it again or change anything would be to at least factory reset and we’ll see something is wrong.

smileyhead ,

Really wish Taler to be available for use in the first country.

smileyhead ,

This could be so awesome for electric scooters or anything tradicionally having coin insert.

smileyhead ,

Never happened. Is this even possible? They always find a way to slip up or down.

smileyhead ,

I think the CPU was dictated by targeting battery life.

Free office suite, backup tool, file transfer tool…

smileyhead ,

I know GUIs are important for being mainstream, but I also don’t see the point of getting whole team of UI/UX designers to work on graphical settings option to change simple intiger value of system config.

Changing audio bitrate is an option for advanced users. I open new tab in my text editor, fuzzy search the file and desired option in seconds and save, when in something like control panel is whole journey interrupting current workflow.

smileyhead ,

The fact that official way is still to create an account, aka ask Apple for permission is dumb.

smileyhead ,

At least sneakers doesn’t have a bunch of sensors, Internet connection and propietary software loaded, so by going with trend you won’t compromise anything other than money.
