Yep. No matter the CEO. The fact the even can do it means they’ll probably try.

smileyhead ,

If the software would not be propietary, game studios could patch versions they already have so Unity won’t be tamptes to mess with it.

smileyhead ,

The thing is, in systems like WhatsApp we don’t decide what is the best for us, but WhatsApp.

Maybe integrating some features is better, maybe separation. Or maybe third way, separated things under one package (for example all-in-one packages like Nextcloud or Thunderbird).

smileyhead ,

Because with nonlibre/nonfree/closed apps, user interest is never at the front. It is only considered at the beginning when apps need to gain userbase, then they can exploit it.

Every app that take away user ability to inspect, modify or share it is creating a path for abuse.

Matrix 2.0: Radically faster client, OAuth logins and native video calls (matrix.org)

Back at FOSDEM we announced the idea of Matrix 2.0 - a series of huge step changes in terms of Matrix’s usability and performance, made up of Sliding Sync (instant login/launch/sync), Native OIDC(industry-standard authentication), Native Group VoIP (end-to-end encrypted large-scale voice & video conferencing) and Faster Joins...

Actually it would be much preffered to just use gifs from the keyboard. It would work across apps and do not bloat messengers.

I hate how everything requires you to download a shitty proprietary data harvesting app nowadays when everything can be done just fine without an app.

I have recently started a new position and am required to use an app that has three Facebook trackers, one of them being a Facebook location tracker according to Exodus App Privacy in order to get your food when it would literally work perfectly fine ordering to a real cashier or shit even a website rather than having to...

smileyhead ,

Go to system settings and find this dialer app there. Check if the app have permission to be “displayed above other apps”, this should be not in overall permissions list but on app listing in settings itself.

Also check if it’s marked as default system dialer, if there is no battery optimalization enabled and if other permissions are in place.

Hope it helps.

smileyhead ,

Unfortunetly all of them are propietary.

vikunja.io is open source nice one. They have Android app in beta.

smileyhead ,

It is just a codename, Element X is going to be just Element once it replace the old one.

smileyhead ,

Between iPhone and Android, I choose PostmarketOS.

smileyhead ,

Looks, that’s ok as there is more Linux tablets to arrive.

smileyhead ,

But we have a problem in capitalistic markets now. We have dozens different flavors of same thing.

For this money I would rather donate, pay for membership or create my own Mastodon instance.

The Maintainer Of The NVIDIA Open-Source "Nouveau" Linux Kernel Driver Resigns (www.phoronix.com)

Thank you bot for longer TLDR than there is on original post.

Before anyone raises their pitchforks: Google already has to accept changes made to Android, like any project ever created. The change is only that there now has to be two people instead of one.

Yes, Android is moving in bad direction in user freedom perspective, but please don’t react hostile to every single news about Android, because then you show community caring about this stuff as being crazy.

smileyhead ,

Why Bluesky when there is ecosystem of dozens community-baked and deployed apps?

smileyhead ,

Maybe I missed something in this thread but it seem like the point is “my friends would be there”? Like the same thing we hear over and over with every shit platform.

I can now comment on Wordpress blogs from Mastodon, follow PeerTube channels, host it myself in my closet, BBC is on there, Flipboard joined, Tumbr said it’ll join, Facebook’s Threads said they apparently want too. I see goverments and parties there. Yet the argument is “people would be there”. No they won’t, look at the boring corporate logo, who would leave awesome community of animals for blue box? Or am I missing something?

smileyhead ,

Discoverability / visibility accross instances is an issue Is Bluesky somehow fixing this without centralized IDs?

Other things are just who is using the network. And what must be said, is that all those toxic people would migrate to a new popular standard too! The point is that we should have standard for social media years ago. The mindset that the app you are using must be somehow tied to who are you interacting with is something created by centralized platforms. I don’t care if people I hate are on the same network, I join a server that matches my values or create my own and everyone’s happy.

smileyhead ,

Blockchain requires everyone to have global Internet connection, which is an assumption that is not always possible.

What if I don’t nessesary need my posts to be replicated houndreds of times all over the world and providing from Raspberry Pi under the bed is enough? What if goverment cut off Internet on it’s borders for a month?

Guess what blockchain nodes are using to connect to each other? IANA’s IP space, ICANN’s DNS system, global SSL system…

If we want ultimate goal of decentralization, why not permissionless mesh networking without ISP dependency? GNUNet is closest to this idea, but in alpha development for 20 years.

What if public transit was like Uber? A small city ended its bus service to find out (apnews.com)

What if public transit was like Uber? A small city ended its bus service to find out::Small-scale, tech-based solutions to transportation problems have emerged as a great equalizer in the battle for infrastructure dollars between big cities and rural communities.

smileyhead ,

I’m convienced in next 5-10 years I won’t be using Android anymore. This is sinking boat, the only thing keeping me on it is that other boats are just being build.

smileyhead ,

Clever people recommending browsers, DNSes, extentions… But is it how this suppose to work?

Normalize pure HTML websites.

smileyhead ,

My dream phone is iPhone hardware with ability to run whatever OS you want like Raspberry Pi.

smileyhead ,

Hard to selfhost and no E2EE by default I guess. First one can be blamed on Gmail and OutLook, second one is lack of mass PGP usage.

smileyhead ,

Invidious, Piped, etc. instances come and go. We shouldn’t link to them and break links.

let’s just install LibRedirect or Privacy Redirect extention and just pick our own.

smileyhead ,

I am sure I saw an app on F-Droid that can do redirects, but cannot recall the name right now.

smileyhead ,

This is what we get with propietary software. We can’t go to another entity or create one to develop the engine for us moving forward. We can’t take the current state of the engine and just patch it to keep existing games alive.

If you depend on some work and that work is being done by software only some other company control, this company is really in the control of that work.

smileyhead ,

Fanatic is really good word here. We should be sorry for the devs and just give them advice.

smileyhead ,

Higher risk for woman of being abused does not mean that for man of being abused is 0.

I don’t understand why if something bad is more propably to happed to woman we make special exception in the rules just to exclude man of this protection.

smileyhead ,

We all know that people hating other people are the problem. Thanks for a reminder.

smileyhead ,

You explained that woman are in higher risk. But you did not explain why because woman are in higher risk we should only protect them and not everyone, even if protecting everyone would be less costly.

Creating UI to select driver’s sex is easier than verifing your sex and then if you’re woman showing an option. This is active work hours to disallow man from a protection.

smileyhead ,
  1. Group A is far more likely to be abused.
  2. We develop a tool to prevent abuse.
  3. We deny the tool to group B that sometimes needs it, because group A needs it more.

I’m not denying 1., stop assuming I do with cheap arguments like “How many times have you been abused?”. Yes, woman are more likely to be sexual victims.

But my question is why doing 3.? For Lyft it costs basically the same if not less when allowing the feature generally to everyone.

smileyhead ,

But it still has a phone OS. Android is really resource hungry taking into account it’s limitations.

smileyhead ,

As a player, no. And I don’t recommend doing anything, this is developer tool among them.

You can donate to Godot I guess? But of course you are not the one using it.

smileyhead ,

Why you need special app for that? Just sync the files with Git.

smileyhead ,

At least on Android and iOS. Other systems like PostmarketOS or Mobian can use Git just like computers.

(This is mostly a joke)

Whatsapp has begun working on support for third party chats (Telegram/Signal) (wabetainfo.com)

smileyhead ,

To convert yourself out of WhatsApp, then your friend, then your other friend. Instead od doing it all at once.

smileyhead ,

Unless if Facebook continue being Facebook and start developing their own incompatible “standard”.

smileyhead ,

Good to mention is that Matrix just got a director that is independent from Element.

smileyhead ,

But you still need an account and the bridge does not use official API.

smileyhead ,

The point is that people can switch their apps one by one, not losing any contacts in the way, instead of trying to convience all your friends to install new app at once.

smileyhead ,

It doesn’t matter if some part of system is open source. What matters is that there is some nonlibre part.

smileyhead ,

RCS needs phone operators, it does not have any publicly available server or client implementation and is already obsolete by other Internet based protocols. And noone uses it besides Google that has bad reputation for keeping chat apps alive.
