smileyhead OP ,

Still need to somehow buy VPS and I can’t find a provider that do not require additional software.

smileyhead OP ,

When registering on DigitalOcean: “You need JavaScript to run this app”.

Okey, so let’s check this scripts: ui-cdn.digitalocean.com/…/main.9e36ba61.js

Seems like an extra software to me.

smileyhead OP ,

Eventually I can use those sites, but I am curious is there is at least one provider that does not require running their code on my computer and just send me the HTML (actual site).

smileyhead OP ,

Or just via web browser that can show websites and does not run any random script that was send to it.

Something like that would be seen as huge deal when talking about mobile or desktop programs, but somehow when browsers do not show how many MB of additional software they downloaded to build a webpage (that in my opinion should already be build by the server) somehow we all assume there is no software.

smileyhead OP ,

Web remote console or live metrics are understandable. But requiring scripts to register or show a header is something I try to avoid. And not because of security or privacy but out of principle of simplicity and healthy web ecosystem.

smileyhead OP ,

You didn’t, but your browser was even if it doesn’t tell you.

Whatsapp has begun working on support for third party chats (Telegram/Signal) (wabetainfo.com)

The European Union has recently reached an agreement on a significant competition reform known as the Digital Markets Act (DMA), which will impose strict rules on large tech companies that will have to offer users the ability to communicate with each other using different apps. WhatsApp is one of the companies that will be...

smileyhead ,

Propietary garbage. Contact us @gmail.com? Links to Facebook and Twitter in the footer?

Seriously do not download it might be a malware trying to advertise itself this way.

smileyhead ,

No, it’s not nice. Looks good only on Windows where everything have unmaching look anyway.

smileyhead ,

World Wide Web was not intended to be an app framework.

smileyhead ,

Maybe I do not specify clearly what I mean.

Why to order taxi, access bank, register a domain name do we have to have apps on all platforms and then to fix this problem we bloat the web by creating webapps. Why not just plain simple HTML website beautified with CSS instead?

Real cross-platform apps are those written in, for example QT. Then came Android and iOS forcing everyone to use their toolkits so we started to abuse poor web.

smileyhead ,

Yet Internet just scaled up to handle worldwide traffic, while WWW evolved into mess noone is able to implement anymore.

smileyhead ,

Inspect any major website, you’ll see boilerplate of <div><div><div><div> and unreadable pile of JavaScript programs your browser need to run to build the website. Sites should be done in a way that is still readable after you disable one element (for example disable CSS function, scripts or HTML specific tag).

Internet is modular, based on stacked protocols. Want to fit Tor between TCP and HTTP? No problem. Web is also like that, build of semi-independent formats, in theory. But in practice devs are using frameworks that assume Chrome, Firefox and Safari are and would ever be the only things existing. Now if you want to develop new browser you not only need to display HTML and add other things later. You need to get all specifications of all standards working right away or sites would spectacularly break.</div></div></div></div>

Microsoft cuts ties with the Surface Duo after just 2 Android version updates (www.windowscentral.com)

Microsoft is done supporting the original Surface Duo, three years after it first launched on September 10. The company has stated from the very start that the Surface Duo would receive just three years of OS updates, meaning today is the last day that Microsoft has to stay true to its word....

Android is literally Linux

No, it isn’t. Can you install Flatpak apps on Android? Can you plug it in a monitor and run GIMP or desktop version of Firefox? Because actual Linux phones can.

The difference is that Android phones only use Linux kernel and it is so much modified by SoC maker and OEM that by side effect it can’t run anything beside Android anymore. There are projects like PostmarketOS trying to port real (mainline) Linux on phones but it takes awful amount of work and supports like 5 phones still with no things like cameras. There are also systems like Droidian trying to strip Android to bare minimum and run Linux on top of it like an always-on-top app, but this also is only for a couple of phones.

smileyhead ,

There are almost no websites now, all are JavaScript apps build on top of assumption that everyone is using same 3-4 browsers.

smileyhead ,

Mastodon do not have chats and DMs are just a side effect of selecting post visibilty. Thankfully, I much prefer just creating a link to proper chat in bio.

smileyhead ,

Propably you already know, but there is an effort to make Infinity work with Lemmy, now called Eternity.

Streaming Has Reached Its Sad, Predictable Fate | What should I watch? is now a much easier question than How do I watch it? (www.theatlantic.com)

Streaming Has Reached Its Sad, Predictable Fate | What should I watch? is now a much easier question than How do I watch it?::What should I watch? is now a much easier question than How do I watch it?

smileyhead ,

That’s why I ask myself “What do I want to watch?” and shop for physical option day or two before. When watching a movie once a two-three weeks like me it’s cheaper and I can keep it.

(Now someone suggest just pirating, but I don’t pirate movies that promises to be good)

smileyhead ,

Umm… 😅 Usually there is, but if not DRM-free digital purchace is as good. If there is only DRM streaming available, then f*** it and start to sail.

smileyhead , (edited )

We must save ourselfs and resist using those things.

smileyhead ,

There should be minister for equality. Dividing is making more conflicts.

smileyhead ,

There is an issue with monoculture of rendering engines. Developers assume every browser have the same things implemented and start to build around this assumption. Also Google can dictate how the web looks like.

smileyhead ,

Please don’t confuse Internet with WWW, it’s making discussion like this even harder, thanks.

smileyhead ,

Plot twist: Bitwarden on desktop is Chromium browser based.

Still can be used in FF as plugin.

smileyhead ,

Avoid webapps ported to desktop, noted.

smileyhead ,

You can use Chromium for that. Also it’s not a website then.

smileyhead ,

Because what would be the practical difference between this “website” and Android app if Android base was available on others systems?

Both are dependent on specific runtime, both are API based, with special way to do persistant storage (usually not for user to view), both have restrictive permission system, both isolate apps from each other… The only difference is Chrome does not have centralized app store and still has compatibility with regular websites.

smileyhead , (edited )

The innovation: So, we hasn’t implemented any of the features our rival has for 5 years, but take this one that makes you harder to switch.

smileyhead ,

Microsoft is less subtle about it. But nowadays Google is bigger deal, on PCs at least you can change operating system and there are plenty of options to go without Microsoft, for every of their services there is alternative with relatively low switching cost.

Now is there a phone manufacturer not preinstalling Google apps with system privilages… Apple? That’s it. But Apple is same problem. There are some resellers flashing different flavours of Android, but no top-down product. In my country there are now cashier-less shops you can’t go into without their app from Google Play, banks are making it harder to log it, police is starting to first ask for app ID then for plastic one.

smileyhead ,

The car can collect data and it can be downloaded when you go to a repair

smileyhead ,

Exaclly how I feel. Can’t buy many things because all brands of it are broken by principle.

smileyhead ,

Market share and earnings are not everything. We understand why game developers could not want to port their stuff, but the point is not to blame operating system that has nothing to do with it and focus trying to convience developers to support user-friendly systems at least out of principle even if it is not the most revenue generating decition.

smileyhead ,

True. But small developers should support community owned things, as they are on their side. It’s not profitable in spreadsheet, but healthy for whole ecosystem.

Remember Windows creators are the ones having a dream for everything being on XBox and Microsoft Store.

smileyhead ,

Actually RCS is not great example. Pretty bad “standard” with only one, Google implementation.

smileyhead ,

Remember to not make it your problem :).

smileyhead ,

That’s how bad online services and nonfree programs was working since forever. The Internet is just sending the stuff your computer want to send.

smileyhead ,

1984.hosting, because it’s the only one I know that does not require you to run any propietary software.

smileyhead ,

They have domains too, but very little choice. Still looking for proper domain registar in this style.

France’s browser-based website blocking proposal will set a disastrous precedent for the open internet (blog.mozilla.org)

In a well-intentioned yet dangerous move to fight online fraud, France is on the verge of forcing browsers to create a dystopian technical capability. Article 6 (para II and III) of the SREN Bill would force browser providers to create the means to mandatorily block websites present on a government provided list. Such a move...

smileyhead , (edited )

Just Internet? Browsers are client side software. It’s a danger to open computing in general.

smileyhead ,

This is a good way if someone really Like some games not working on Linux. Also it can keep work and fun separated.

I can recommend setting up encryption when installing Linux system to make Windows programs unable to access your files.

smileyhead OP ,

I think the price is more to prevent people from spamming orders than to actually make money. StickerMule is propably losing on this stickers to make their site more recognized.

smileyhead ,

Matrix.org?

smileyhead ,

And then people will send you DMs on Fediverse even if you don’t use it for chat.

smileyhead ,

It’s harder to maintain security due to more complexity of federated systems and Matrix does not have as much global security community looking at it as Signal has.

smileyhead ,

Room replication is not as big of a deal for server as it seems. But as server admin I can say Synapse is terrible at garbage collection, the database keeps growing and growing if you don’t make your special scripts to clean it.

smileyhead ,

Matrix is not complicated, it’s Element’s UX. It’s going in good direction, remember than on WhatsApp people are factory resetting their phones to move chats between Android and iPhone. You can do clickable Matrix link in bio and there are instances that offer Fediverse+Matrix combo accounts.

Cars with wired input. More reliable than Bluetooth and not annoying when it connects when you don’t want to.
