TIL about Roko's Basilisk, a thought experiment considered by some to be an "information hazard" - a concept or idea that can cause you harm by you simply knowing/understanding it (en.wikipedia.org)

Roko's basilisk is a thought experiment which states that an otherwise benevolent artificial superintelligence (AI) in the future would be incentivized to create a virtual reality simulation to torture anyone who knew of its potential existence but did not directly contribute to its advancement or development, in order to...

I’ve learned about this the hard way in that I’ve discovered elephants in the room that I can’t share with anyone

it’s kinda fucked up

  • like CSAM there are some certain things that shouldn’t be shared

With the 7900 XTX currently being around

  • $900 USD and
  • $1300 CAD…

at what price point do you think AMD will release their next gen flagship?

recursive_recursion OP , (edited )
@recursive_recursion@programming.dev avatar

The Steves are right that if A.I is still as profitable for both AMD and Nvidia by then, expect prices to go up for any flagship. It wouldn’t make any business sense not to.

you have a good point

although I have to wonder if we’ll have to wait 2 years:

  • if the next gpus are midrange and NVIDIA happens to launch their next flagship sooner than AMD, then AMD’s confirming to take a loss in marketshare which would be pretty bad as they’re currently being cornered/squeezed on both sides
  • Intel’s launching their next gpus pretty soon and their performance gains from improved drivers has been pretty surprising/honestly pretty impressive as I personally didn’t expect much from them on the gpu front

currently for:

  • budget gpus Intel seems like a good option
  • flagship gpus (power efficiency be dammed), NVIDIA is a no brainer
  • best Linux support (currently) AMD gpus are the go to

however for the vast majority of users, people will look for gpus with Windows in mind so in reality it might be just Intel and NVIDIA oddly enough

  • Intel’s providing great budget friendly cards
  • NVIDIA’s serving cash whales
recursive_recursion OP ,
@recursive_recursion@programming.dev avatar

A third player is absolutely welcome to the game

definitely agreed as more competition drives better products for lower prices to consumers✨

just wondering but do you happen to know if Intel’s gpus are good for all Linux distros?

  • last I heard was that they’re primarily supporting Ubuntu (I could be wrong about this)
recursive_recursion OP ,
@recursive_recursion@programming.dev avatar

on distros that have more recent packages, like Fedora.

ah you’re right!

😳I asked a stupid question as I should’ve checked the Tech Compendium (ArchLinux Wiki) before asking😅

thanks! +1

I wonder if this is where AI might be useful where it’s used to filter out all of the megacorp ads, popups, and other random garbage?

  • train LLMs on megacorp content and use it to filter out results
    • sponsorblock adds this as a toggleable option just like the “skip segment” UI video overlay button
recursive_recursion ,
@recursive_recursion@programming.dev avatar

tbh it’s the same here although I’m starting to see an upwards trend in positive and wholesome activity🌻

HP bricks ProBook laptops with bad BIOS delivered via automatic updates — many users face black screen after Windows pushes new firmware (www.tomshardware.com)

On May 26, a user on HP’s support forums reported that a forced, automatic BIOS update had bricked their HP ProBook 455 G7 into an unusable state. Subsequently, other users have joined the thread to sound off about experiencing the same issue....

@recursive_recursion@programming.dev avatar

On the offhand chance that someone with a bricked HP laptop stumbles here looking for what to do (prob via smartphone or public library computer),

  • I’d recommend on removing the M.2 SSD (gumslice-shaped PCB that contains your data) to protect your data
    • this can be found by googling your laptop’s serial number and looking for the manual, after downloading the PDF file you’ll be able to open it with Firefox
    • you’ll typically need a philips-head screwdriver to remove the laptop’s case and remove the SSD

I’m assuming the users might be coming from Windows

hopefully this helps someone out there

recursive_recursion ,
@recursive_recursion@programming.dev avatar

seems like it should be an opt-in setting in BIOS;

  • HP might want to learn from the other OEM vendors what to do for BIOS/UEFI configuration

@recursive_recursion@programming.dev avatar

yeeesh is this with Windows 10 and/or 11?

still not a fan of Windows

edit:
just remembered this is Windows 11, unfortunately I know some people that got forced to use it with most modern laptops

I just share posts/comments that others find useful

recursive_recursion , (edited )
@recursive_recursion@programming.dev avatar

I would say mostly general, and it also depends on context and relevance

  • like I’d send FFXIV memes to my friends who play it but not to anyone else.

For things that people aren’t familiar with but is useful to know (like PC hardware) I tend to share fedi-links as sources/citations after providing context

EX:

  1. [Powercolor Hellhound RX 7900 XT], [Partner Model 4070 Ti] - Value Comparison
  2. [ZOTAC 4080 Super], [PowerColor’s Hellhound 7900 XT] - Value Comparison

Thinking about the cost of maintenance, liabilities, and ethical/moral decisions

  • you couldn’t pay me enough to take on that company

good luck to anyone else thinking otherwise

recursive_recursion ,
@recursive_recursion@programming.dev avatar

is this open source?

I wasn’t able to find anything that indicated it as such, maybe I missed it somewhere?

if it isn’t then I don’t really see the point of this when the admins and mods already have an existing Matrix chat && we could probably just share info via our own c/Meta communities (or we could make another c dedicated for the same purpose)

recursive_recursion , (edited )
@recursive_recursion@programming.dev avatar

hmm

I’d say that I’m cautiously optimistic about this,

  • I just need more information about IFTAS Connect like:
  1. Why would I use this over Lemmy/Sublinks/BreezeWiki
  2. Where’s the source code and what’s the license?

IFTAS News - May 29, 2024https://programming.dev/pictrs/image/a111ac43-7918-40da-b228-9063c4219324.png

“Comments are closed.”

Also seeing things like ^this is what gives me hesitation in being able to trust them

  • remember locked posts on Reddit and StackOverflow? yeah me too :/

I like the idea behind the project,

  • but I just need more reasons as to why I can trust using this over what’s currently available

Edit

As of June 7, 2024

  • As this is already open source under the AGPL-3.0 License there is even less reason to blindly choose to go with IFTAS Connect unless more information is provided otherwise

recursive_recursion OP ,

I added openshot and left out IFME (it doesn’t seem like the devs understand software licensing unfortunately, the project’s also a bit of a copyright landmine😅)

recursive_recursion OP ,

added this as well!

you’re doing some great post

recursive_recursion ,

TL;DR: Restarting your phone once a week can help improve performance and security.

  • this is the same for routers and it’s commonly known as a power refresh
recursive_recursion ,
@recursive_recursion@programming.dev avatar

Couple of guesses I have:

  • potential graphics driver issues
    • s: could try reinstalling/updating graphics drivers
  • Microsoft
    • s1: full system refresh via Windows reinstall (after backing up all user files)
    • s2: for beginners; Linux Mint

hard to say what else without any additional info (or having your device in front of me to figure out what’s happening)

  • for example, did you happen to install anything or was there a recent Windows update?
recursive_recursion ,
@recursive_recursion@programming.dev avatar

huh usually I vote on posts or comments that I’ve read but I’m gonna abstain on this one

  • this post is relevant to the community
    • however it doesn’t necessarily provide much (to most users including myself) except for being mildly interesting

edit:
hmm on second thought, it’s not bad in terms when considering some of the moderated posts (spam and junk), and it was interesting enough that I commented on it so +1
