Partially dead CPUs can absolutely still POST and boot. I work in a PC repair shop and see it all the time. Everything will work totally “fine” and you’ll get weird errors here and there similarly to failing RAM. You have to run a dedicated CPU test like the ones in OCCT (Windows-based, don’t lynch me) or similar to see if you’re getting WHEA or other errors.

The reason for this is that a lot of CPUs have built in redundancy to get around having imperfect silicon, and sometimes that is enough to make the system still work, but not be quite “right”.

The good news is, if you are producing such errors, you usually have a 3yr warranty on most CPUs and the OEM will RMA them for you.

monsterpiece42 ,

That’s the name of the program. You can search it and it’ll pop right up. It is now owned by Cooler Master.

Once you download it, you can run either the CPU Srress test or the Linpack test (this is for Intel mostly as it is their proprietary test) and it’ll run while looking for math or WHEA errors.

While you’re doing science, I would also recommend doing a RAM test with memtest86+. You download the .iso and make a bootable drive, and boot into it. Both RAM and CPU can make similar weird failures so checking both is a decent idea.

Do you ever worry that you're secretly a psychopath that unknowingly manipulates people around you?

Someone recently told me that they sometimes feel gaslighted around me because I effortlessly make them question their beliefs and feelings. Hearing that didn’t sit well with me, especially since I’ve been pondering the question in the title for quite some time....

“To be autistic is to be misunderstood”

I have ASD and I have historically worried about the same thing, as has my sister. From the outside ASD and psychopathy can look similar to untrained eyes. The biggest “tell” is how you feel (or dont feel) inside.

I recommend looking into Autistic Masking to see if that explains the “alter ego” you seemed to describe earlier.

While you’re researching this, I will tell you that autism is probably the one thing where you will have better luck listening/talking to other autistic people than to just read data from something like the DSM-5. There are a lot of YouTube people with various profiles of autism and I have had far better luck learning from them and an autistic friend than anything clinical.

There are also different profiles of ASD. The main ones are:

  • Classic Autism
  • Asperger’s (now called HFA or High Functioning Autism, but there is still a LOT of info out there from when it was still called Asperger’s)
  • PDA or Pathological Demand Avoidance So be sure to check out all of them before thinking you aren’t just because one doesn’t fit. I thought I wasn’t autistic for YEARS because I did not know the right profile.

Long story short, ASD is HUGE and largely not understood. If you have questions, shoot me a message. As you look around, I’m sure you’ll learn about Autistic Special Interests. Psychology and especially ASD are mine, so I’m happy to rant teach about it forever.

Good luck in your journey!

Hey, not diagnosing or anything, but maybe give my other comment a once-over and see if it resonates at all.

I’m autistic and have much better luck finding “plain” conversation with other autistic people. No idea I’d you are or aren’t but you’ll welcome to join the community of you aren’t a bullshitter.

It can be a little weird to get used to because the whole world lies, but man, is it refreshing once you do and have the trust/rapport to just speak plainly with friends.

[Rant] A few days ago, I asked if Mint would run okay on a Lenovo T460 (I appreciate all the advice). I got it working, but the installation was a big pain and I totally blame Lenovo.

I got the T460 refurbished and I really didn’t want to run Windows 10 on it. I last used Linux for any real length of time a good 20 years ago, so I’m pretty inexperienced with it at this point and I had to figure out how to install it myself....

monsterpiece42 ,

This sounds like it was strictly the fault of the USB load. If you make a UEFI USB (you should use Ventoy, it’s great btw) all you would need to do is shut off Secure Boot and install.

Most bootable drives don’t support Secure Boot. You turn it off, do the install, and turn it back on if you want it. I personally just leave it off.

Outside of those caveats everything you described is industry-standard stuff. Nothing to do with Lenovo.

OP does not use said meme

this guy links to it

Smh.SMH.

(Or possibly OP edited away from that meme and this guy leaves the link. I’m a day late, take your pick. )

monsterpiece42 ,

Beat me too it. First thing that popped into my head for sure

monsterpiece42 ,

I work in a decent-sized computer repair shop and this is a very accurate representation of what the average user knows.

Just in case anyone thinks this is over the top.

monsterpiece42 ,

This works at a feudal technology level. Who makes the trains? They train makers need steel and literally no one would work in a forge or a mine for fun/preference.

Who makes computer chips?

monsterpiece42 ,

First, the easiest one: Silicon is never going to be serviceable or upgradeable. That’s not how it works.

There’s no chance of all that happening out of good will. Look up what goes into making a Fab (Intel has some tour videos).

These aren’t the things that people “with the skills” show up for. It takes a lifetime of studying for some of the layers of these topics, not to mention collaboration between the others (or even finding them, if only the hospitals and emergency services would have access to computers, and therefore professional networking and email).

There are some truly awful jobs on this planet. Look up how sulfur is collected. People literally climb into volcanos to chip it off the walls and carry up sometimes 200lbs on their backs. One trip on that pumice and you’re toast.

People need incentives, and with no money, there would be a power vacuum…for another kind of money. I’m not saying capitalism is great or anything, don’t get me wrong. But you can’t just get rid of money.

monsterpiece42 ,

If you read the article, they partner with GSK. So it’s probably only going to them, not the open market. They openly say they’re researching genetic meds.

monsterpiece42 ,

No, they are in the business of getting fucked so a union would be a bad fit for them.

monsterpiece42 ,

Hey there. I run Linux on my daily but also work in a Windows-centric PC repair shop.

“Official” answer: You can move your key over to a new mobo by signing in to Windows with a Microsoft account, installing your new hardware, and activating Win 11 through the Settings->Activation->Troubleshooting (button)->“I recently changed hardware”. And that will pull your key back down from your account. But it does lock you into an account.

“Unofficial” answer: you can absolutely update to Win 11 on old hardware. The easiest way is to boot a Win 11 iso in Ventoy. That works fairly often. You can alternatively edit the installer to not do the TPM check in the installer, which you can search for guides for online/YouTube.

Alternatively: you can hop on g2a, kinguin, etc and buy Windows keys cheap.

To be clear I know this is all bullshit, but it’s options. Hope this helps!

monsterpiece42 ,

Also autistic. I had the same thought about OP.

Before building my mask I was very similar (and probably pissed a lot of NTs off too lol).

monsterpiece42 ,

I was late diagnosed discovered as well. Early 30s.

I have a decent mask built up but it is really exhausting so I try not to use it if I don’t have to.

On thing I’ve found about small talk is, people love to be told what day it is. Like they ask you “how’s it going?” and you say back “well it sure is a Tuesday!” It’s actually amusing how well it works.

monsterpiece42 ,

I work in a computer repair shop and we rarely see any Thinkpads of any age.

Far from shit. And they have among the best warranty options in the biz

monsterpiece42 ,

Electricians are well paid and among the least physical trades

monsterpiece42 ,

I used to drink this all the time as a kid. I tried it as an adult and it holds up.

Sounds nasty, but it averages out to roughly what is a carbonated milkshake. Not bad at all.

monsterpiece42 ,

Your best bet for this type of thing would probably be a discord channel. That’s usually where you’ll find gamer meetups and such. I wish you luck!

God of War Creator Is Unhappy With New Games and Kratos' Story (comicbook.com)

Despite being nominated for numerous awards and even winning Game of the Year in 2018, the creator of God of War, David Jaffe, is not a huge fan of the new direction the series has gone in. Jaffe himself hasn't worked on these new God of War games, but thinks that they're not staying true to the spirit of the character and the...

About $100k would be the delta to move where is rather be.

monsterpiece42 ,

There are many options, but this genre of workout device is called a pushup board.

monsterpiece42 ,

I know grammar is hard, but OP is clearly saying that using a Bluetooth speaker in the bathroom seems pointless, not music listening in general.

Maybe at least be correct if you’re going to be a dick.

monsterpiece42 ,

Music listening in general ≠ listening to music in the shower.

Maybe at least be correct if you’re going to be a dick.

monsterpiece42 ,

Sorry to nitpick, but it’s Ublock Origin. I know autocorrect hates “ublock”

monsterpiece42 ,

I 100% want trying to be a dick to you, I only said that in case people that didn’t know better tried to search it. Apologies if I came off sideways!

monsterpiece42 ,

In this vein I also recommend the KISS launcher on F-Droid. It’s super clean. Highly recommend if you like focused phone usage.

Why didn't anyone remind me the dual booting exists?

I was talking to my dad yesterday and he talked about how he dual booted windows and Linux in his college days. I immediately left to download Ubuntu, I feel so dumb for forgetting it’s an option. I literally only use windows so I can play Fortnite with friends. PSA: you can have both Linux and Windows, or you can use a vm in...

monsterpiece42 ,

As others have said, I also highly recommend physically separate drives. I have found both Linux and Windows affect each other sometimes especially when you’re getting your bearings with dual booting.

For instance, after running Linux the clock in Windows will be wrong. And Windows will eat the Linux boot partition especially after feature packs (formerly called service packs), which come out about 1-2/year.

monsterpiece42 ,

So what’s your pitch on the Outer Wilds? I know barely anything about it and it’s always best to hear these things from someone who knows the game.

monsterpiece42 ,

Twice a year to turn it around for equal weathering. They raffle tickets for people to ride on it.

monsterpiece42 ,

Those spelling errors wiggles are definitely Open/Libre office. A real one would be in Word.

But other than that, this feels very MS.

Really scary 2D horror games?

I am fascinated by games with 2D art that still manage to give you a good scare. I guess what I find interesting is if a game can manage to translate the scares and audio design which we know from 3D environments and movies. I have never really played any though. I would love to hear some suggestions, especially with Halloween...

monsterpiece42 ,

Uncanny Valley (2015) is an option. It’s polarizing though. Might be worth a try of you get it real cheap.

monsterpiece42 ,

If we’re commiting to the bit, we should put “the other guy” instead of a name

monsterpiece42 ,

This is the answer OP. Or similarly, I lined up a T14S Gen 1 for $299 with a 2 year warranty included on eBay. 10th gen i5, 16GB RAM, 512GN NVMe.

Here’s a random one I found. Touchscreen too if you like that, but slightly over $300.

Looking to dip my toes into Linux for the first time. I have a 2016 Intel MacBook Pro with pretty solid specs collecting dust right now that I think I’m going to use. Research so far has indicated to me that the two best options for me are likely Mint or Elementary OS. Does anyone have any insight? Also open to other OS’s. I would consider myself decently tech savvy but I am not a programmer or anything. Comfortable dipping into the terminal when the need arises and all that.

@linux

monsterpiece42 ,

Mint and Pop OS are fantastic. Both have great support out of the box and lots of help out there on the Internet.

If you’re trying to game I would flatly say Pop OS. General computing, both are a tie for me. They just work (as far as Linux goes).

monsterpiece42 ,

A small point but a legit one. I have two e-scooters and I like them a lot. One point on cost, the cheaper one was around $700 and is a phenomenal commuter. The other one is still a commuter, but with more powerful motors for my very hilly area. That one was around $1400. There are mid ranges bikes (in the total scale of bikes) that cost what both my scooters do together.

In this way, e-bikes and e-scooters should be seen very differently imo.

monsterpiece42 ,

What I’m saying is that $500 is enough to get you a brand new e-scooter that will go similar-to-bike speeds with no deal hunting, no mods, and a warranty. They’re also foldable, portable on to most public trans (inside) or into “the office”, and have virtually no maintenance.

No hate on bikes. I have a couple of very nice bikes (not as nice as that Marinoni to be fair). But let’s not act like you’re reliability getting places for <$500. And even if you do, not everyone can. Solutions need to be repeatable.

Edit: also to be fair, I am talking $500 USD. But if you go with a used scooter here you could probably do around $500 CAD equivalent.

monsterpiece42 ,

Well look at you, having all your code where it belongs.

monsterpiece42 ,

This was true for so many people but somehow I never saw a bug on PC Cyberpunk.

‘Call of Duty’ Doesn’t Just Depict Bad History—It’s Pro-War Propaganda (progressive.org)

I just started playing COD Black Ops Cold War because I got it through my PlayStation Plus subscription and wanted to try it out. I’ve previously played some others like Modern Warfare (1 and 2) and WWII. While it always felt a bit over the top and propaganda-ish, I really liked it for the blockbuster feeling and just turning...

monsterpiece42 ,

You’re making a solid and valid point OP. The other guy is being a fuck. I wouldn’t pay him much mind but I do admire your willingness to explain your angle!
