They actually get dangerously close to them, to pet them and take photos of them and feed them, then these tourists wonder why are they being attacked...

It's not really hard to type a website, it's rather hard to remember it. You remember your username. Okay. But where were you? mastodon dot what?

When you use your full address, it's not that hard to remember it.

The military-industrial complexes always have something to gain in wars (provided they manage to adapt in time). But there's no other alternative industry that can supply the needed hardware to win a war, when an invasion happens. It just seems that's all what our species can do best: kicking each other, then having a rest for a few dozen years and starting over.

ginerel ,
@ginerel@kbin.social avatar

There are not, and probably will never be, as they require proprietary blobs (e.g. see this issue in Catima)

ginerel ,
@ginerel@kbin.social avatar

No, I don't think it will go like that.

But if piracy would go away, then it would mean we live in a great world:

  • Software: FOSS/Freeware/Donationware software prevails. People want to use this kind of software, and this is the go-to for any appliance. People would be deeply affected if they could not use free (as both in freedom and/or money, as mentioned before) software - gone will be the days of everyone needing Adobe products or MS Office for their professional work, and the year of the Linux desktop would be in the history books.
  • Movies and TV shows: They would be available anywhere, on demand, in any format. Or there would be this website where you would go to and watch whatever you would, without ads. It would kinda be the same with music.
  • p0rn: I don't have enough knowledge in this field, I just go to certain websites when I need. Guess it would be like on the previous point? idk.

As long as those points are not achieved, there will always be a need for piracy, and people will always find new ways to get their content. So far, I do not see us being somewhere even close to that ideal world, so there are plenty of reasons for piracy to exist.

I personally try to pirate things more ethically, for example I try to buy music and games whenever I can, but I know several people that pirate stuff just because they can.

Something like that. I always heard it from my parents and grandparents that "it's with fleas" or "you can see with fleas" when that happened. I never knew what was the link between those, but it sounds funny all the time, lol.

I cannot reply to a previous comment, due to it not federating here, but the children of 2020s will literally be online from day one!

There are countless parents that are posting pictures of their newborns on social media, on Instagram or Facebook, straight to a server in California, so imagine that every single person whose parents are like oh, I don't care about privacy, I got nothing to hide bro will have at least one photo there.

And it's not only that. They'll just never get to experience how life goes with no computer in sight, with no smartphones, not even cellphones at all. No computer, and more importantly, no internet, just cartoons on TV such as Life with Louie or Courage the Cowardly Dog or the Looney Tunes series. And even more importantly, no social media. None at all. Nothing to distract you from actually living.

ginerel ,
@ginerel@kbin.social avatar

US-controlled and domiciled site - yes, but I do not see it having a monopoly on information at all. Sure is big, has lots of info, pages, it is a rather good resource in linking stuff to the various concepts that you want to explain others e.g. in an argument.

But the very fact that anyone can edit information makes it not recommendable in academia, for example (really, when I was a student, all my professors were generally not recommending it for information because, as one of them said, even grandma could edit it). So I don't think I would trust ibis on scientific articles either, at least not in the fields I'm directly interested in - maybe for some random trivia/did you know stuff, idk.

limited / niche wikis

But this is where I think it would really shine, indeed, as one could make a wiki about a game or software more easily, probably link pages from different instances, etc. (as others said already).

Don't know what else to say, it just seems like an interesting project. Congrats to anyone involved on this first release and looking forward to see what this project will bring.

I kinda get all the Threads worries and the fact that some people might not be comfortable with Meta collecting their data for advertising. But this is just insane. It just makes me think people are just irrationally angry at everything, and they like being that, instead of informing themselves about what everything does.

ginerel ,
@ginerel@kbin.social avatar

Well, those who did not vote are complacent to the majority vote. So I'd say that's a win.

Always go out there and vote, regardless of the option you choose. That's what keeps a democratic system up and running. If you don't, you just agree with what is decided by others and stay complacent.

lemmy.ml
first time [...] a mod didn't like the viewpoint expressed.

Haha, wow, first time?

Welcome to this place. Lemmy.ml is notorious for being run by the actual tankies that created this project. See what they support, what they don't, and have an opposite opinion on that. You will get the boys telling you how it acchually it is not and call you a glowie CIA agent or whatnot for not siding with them. The Reddit migration probably made them more accepting of opposite opinions, but probably because things have calmed down more a bit lately, they started aggressively moderating stances like yours and probably anti-Kremlin takes as well (seriously, before that, if you were against the Russian invasion in Ukraine or against China's politics you would have been accused of being racist towards them - but hey, you can say whatever you want against the USA, or The West, you can't be racist against these, can you?).

Anyway, here's a longer take by FediTips that explains the issues with Lemmy:

Who's winning the war in Ukraine?

The media won’t give me great answers to this question and I think this I trust this community more, thus I want to know from you. Also, I have heard reports that Russia was winning the war, if that’s true, did the west miscalculate the situation by allowing diplomacy to take a backseat and allowing Ukraine to a large...

ginerel , (edited )
@ginerel@kbin.social avatar

I tend to think as well that the situation in Ukraine is currently a stalemate. The fact is that, while Russia is losing weapons, Ukraine is gaining them. There's also a different quality of life for Western weapons compared to the Russian ones because, well, that's something that the West actually cared for back in the Cold War days. USSR and its satellites only cared about meeting the 5-year quota, or whatever they cared for in order to show the West they were more industrialized and whatnot. Western weapons are also more accurate and tends to integrate more hi-tech inside, so that you can use them for one-strike-one-kill instead of carpet bombing large swaths of land until nothing moves there. This is why, e.g. you have Grad systems with around 42 projectiles or so, all usually being fired in chain, while on HIMARS you only have a maximum of 6 projectiles, which are usually fired individually.

All this now proves vital for Ukraine, as it has to fight a country with a larger manpower, a larger (pre-war at least) stock of vehicles and a larger stock of ammunition. Ukraine, however, did not manage to become a powerful force on the counter-offensive. It does a great job at hardening Russian attacks, causing incredible amounts of damage for every inch of land lost, but the required weaponry for a successful breakthrough has been in short supply. Besides that, what Ukraine initially planned to do was to do a combined arms attack. And you cannot do this without a good amount of air support - which Ukraine was and is currently lacking.

IMO, it remains to be seen what will happen when Ukraine will finally start to operate F-16 jets (among other equipment it started to build in-house like drones), but as of now, on the equipment and fighting side, Ukraine is currently winning. On the loss side, while Russia loses more people and equipment than Ukraine, I'm afraid the numbers are proportionally the same for both sides. This is why I see it as heading to a stalemate in the foreseeable future. But Russia can no longer win what it initially planned, it is constantly changing the objectives in order to show the world that it achieved something, and Ukraine simply cannot lose. Russia's only advantage right now is being on the offensive itself.

This might be subjective, but imo, while Mastodon has the most feature complete apps, it's not the most feature complete platform out there. Hell, even Kbin is more feature complete than Mastodon. I recommend trying Friendica, Hubzilla or Streams for a larger feature set.

ginerel ,
@ginerel@kbin.social avatar

Friendica should fit the bill right there for you. Or if you don't want ActivityPub, check out diaspora*. There's also Hubzilla which uses AP as well, but internally it uses its own Zot protocol.

    I agree with the logistics part, as they'd need to build and maintain additional facilities but

    Abrams aren’t built for Romania’s terrain.

    What do you mean by that? Why would they be incompatible with our terrain? Indeed, they'll most likely never be used in the Carpathians, as you'd need more compact and mobile vehicles to go through there. But given our current threat vector - which comes from the East, so basically only Moldovan low-rise hills, Dobrudja and the Romanian Plains where Bucharest is located being the parts under threat - why would they be not fit for that type of terrain?

    ginerel ,
    @ginerel@kbin.social avatar

    This was a Romanian tracker, and it was pretty much the most popular one (or at least that I know of), so I am pretty sure there was a lot of local content as well. Movies also always had Romanian subtitles IIRC, so it was a great source for anyone not having a really good English comprehension to fiddle around.

    There surely are other trackers as well that I'm not aware of or there's Romanian content on other international ones, but the community there was quite impressive - you always knew you could source some good quality stuff.

    For me, personally, FL was pretty much my go-to whenever I wanted to get something that I couldn't source for free.

    From my understanding, they were already in debt to Moldova (not sure if I understood correctly).

    For Moldova, however, this means that it eliminated a source for blackmailing from Russia. Despite also being state-owned, Transgaz and Romania don't have a history of manipulating prices and cutting gas at will, just because of geopolitical interests and national politics of their clients.

    two thirds are still two thirds - whether that's 3 people out of 4 or 750.000 out of 1.000.000. And given that

    I think the numbers are really worrying.

    Confused about the ending of Metro 2033

    In the bad ending of the game, you bomb some volcano looking region of the city with what looks like nukes to kill the dark ones. Got lots of questions about that. Why was that area glowing red? Why were the dark ones thought to be there while during the game they were quite close to human settlements? Or if human settlements...

    Do you still write notes with pen and paper?

    With so much note taking apps nowadays, I can’t understand why does anyone still write notes with pen and paper.
