YouTube Premium is getting a huge price hike in over a dozen countries, sparking user backlash. Some countries are experiencing hikes between 30% and 50% (mas.to)

YouTube Premium users across the globe are facing significant price hikes as Google increases subscription costs in over a dozen countries. This follows earlier price jumps in various regions, including the United States last summer. The latest increases vary by region, with some countries experiencing hikes between 30% to 50%....

YouTube is the only streaming platform I pay for. I don’t want to bother with 3rd party apps, and I use it every day. Plus I get YouTube music out of it, so I don’t need to pay for Spotify. Overall 7/10 it’s fine.

No judgements toward people who don’t want to pay though, I get it.

Amazon's Monopoly of the tech industry is ruining the US economy

I wanted to get printer photo paper for my printer, a Canon. I went to Walmart, They had nothing. Went to Target, they had one pack of photo paper and it was crazy expensive, so I went to micro center. That one was just as expensive. So finally I went back to Amazon, which I was trying to avoid, and saw the price 25 to 40% lower...

What are they? I’d love it if people actually embraced using a different platform. Glassdoor makes no sense anymore

figaro ,

I’m curious, could you elaborate on what this means and what it would accomplish if successful?

figaro ,

I’m glad we aren’t incentivized. It allows for this ultimate litmus to take place. I will literally go shopping with dates to figure this out.

figaro ,

You are a man with a plan. Green flag

figaro , (edited )

Here’s the thing - most of the people who don’t return their shopping carts don’t even know that this is a test. If they did, their behavior would change. If you know about the test, it fundamentally voids the test. And that is what makes it valid. If there is no pressure, what do they do?

figaro ,

As God, I temporarily relieve the souls who are currently in a rush from the consequences of failing the shopping cart test. They will be tested again, however, using seemingly innocuous daily items to prove if they belong in the good place.

Man Arrested for Creating Fake Bands With AI, Then Making $10 Million by Listening to Their Songs With Bots (futurism.com)

The songs that the AI CEO provided to Smith originally had file names full of randomized numbers and letters such as “n_7a2b2d74-1621-4385-895d-b1e4af78d860.mp3,” the DOJ noted in its detailed press release....

figaro ,

Can you imagine how exciting it would be though when this actually started to work? This probably started as a side project, with a dude saying like, nahhh this could never work.

Until suddenly it did

figaro ,

Yeah the cheapest I’d ever recommend anyone go is probably about $100 for one with an analog video signal.

HDZero video with ExpressLRS control link is the new meta though. Off the shelf drones with this setup start around $180 or so now, not including the controller or goggles.

If anyone is looking at getting into the hobby, I’d recommend getting the EMAX tinyhawk 3 kit to start. It comes with everything for about $270.

figaro ,

Ah man, yeah the switch to digital can get expensive. I got lucky and bought the skyzone cobra x goggles when I first got into the hobby - they have an HDMI input, so all I needed to buy was the HDZero adapter. Still pricy but half the price of the HDZero goggles ha

figaro ,

If I have mastodon, how and when can I follow Blue sky users? I read something about an adapter server or something, but I don’t know what that means in a practical sense.

figaro ,

Just checked, looks like they are wired. I get it for certain games, but generally I prefer the convenience of wireless.

figaro ,

… Would they know, if it’s via a VPN?

figaro ,

As an American, if there is a law that says I am not allowed to burn a flag, I will go to the store, buy every flag available, and burn them all.

First amendment = best amendment

Drivers Hate The Tech In Their Cars (jalopnik.com)

It turns out that more technology in cars isn’t necessarily something customers want, and it’s not really improving their driving experience. We know my thoughts on the matter, but I’ll do my best to stay impartial on this latest survey from JD Power that shows most customers don’t appreciate technology in cars unless...

figaro ,

… What kind of car is this? 😂 (Look at the first sentence)

figaro ,

Chex quest. I got this game in a cereal box back in 1996. It defined my childhood.

Now they have an HD version on steam. 10/10 good times.

It’s beautiful

figaro ,

That is a completely made up number.

The corporation of the Mormon church does have absurd wealth and resources, tons of real estate, investments, etc, but estimates say it is worth between 100-300 billion in worth.

That’s a lot, but definitely not trillions lol

Police raid Andrew Tate's home in Romania as new allegations emerge involving minors (apnews.com)

Masked police officers in Romania carried out fresh raids early Wednesday at the home of divisive internet influencer Andrew Tate, who is awaiting trial on charges of human trafficking, rape and forming a criminal gang to sexually exploit women....

When I think of all the horrible shit that goes on in the world, the thing that keeps me going is that Greta Thunburg is responsible for the Tates getting arrested. Life is wonderful sometimes.

figaro ,

anyone who has seen the news on this and kept their Disney+ subscription should be, for moral purposes, treated as someone who condones murder

Bro, not gonna lie, this is a bad take. My grandparents just want to watch their soap operas, my parents really like star wars.

It’s like global warming. Blaming individuals for not recycling is not the move - taking action against huge corporations is the only realistic way to make change. By blaming random people, we end up looking like crazy people.

figaro ,

I use proton VPN for torrenting. It doesn’t show I’ve downloaded anything. I think that means my VPN is working? 😅

figaro ,

The people here who 1) think a breakup of Google will actually happen, and 2) think that a paid subscription model for a search engine have all been spending too much time in their Linux bubble.

If Google did this, everyone would just switch to Bing, or open AI’s new thing they are making. The general public will not be on board with that.

What's your most profound "small world" moment?

This refers to when two or more people encounter each other in completely coincidental fashion. You might notice your old classmate from three countries away is now your waiter in a place you had no reason to expect them in, and you might say “wow, what a small world”. You might notice two people who you know from completely...

Met a girl while being an English teacher in China. She was originally from New York. She had a very distinctive voice, very hard to forget.

Fast forward 10 years. I’m at the Santa Monica Pier playing Pokemon Go with my brother. Suddenly, THAT VOICE. I’m like… No… That isn’t possible. I keep on walking.

We reach the end of the pier, and turn around. And BOOM. There she is. We make eye contact, and are both like wtffff.

Turns out she moved there to do a podcast or something.

Anyway cool shit

figaro ,

When people say things like this, I wonder if they understand how impossible it is. Google is not just a company. It is a 2 trillion dollar entity. Even if Google search entirely fails, it will still persist. At this point, you may as well say, “The wind needs to be ended.” You don’t end the wind. The wind already won. It will outlive you, me, and our children.

What we can do is protect against it. We can deal with it. We can contain it. We can redirect it and repurpose it to be helpful. But ending it? That doesn’t happen.

figaro ,

I’m told that India and Pakistan loved this setup, and still celebrate the arbitrary line to this day.

figaro ,

Man you don’t even know, we probably have immortal mice at this point

figaro ,

Lolll soaking.

Spot on though. The Mormon church has connections and infinite money, rivaling the Catholic Church in terms of wealth (and only increasing by the year). Their current estimated value is over 200 billion, in real estate, land, and investments. They own significant holdings in farmland all over the country including 1% of the entire landmass of Florida.

Historically speaking, the church already went to war against the United States, and attempted to assassinate a governor (unsuccessfully). 1800’s Mormons were nuts.

Obligatory note - I grew up Mormon. I don’t recommend joining the church. Their beliefs are objectively incorrect and oftentimes harmful. They have a cool history though.

figaro ,

How does voting work when this happens? Like, let’s say R’s control the Senate 51-50, but this guy suddenly dies. Is the Senate now split on votes?

figaro ,

A far shorter list would be the fes that are not vulnerable

figaro ,

I know someone who got it at 17. That said, the only reason it happened was because of connections. Usually, even if it gets approved at 16, you basically have to get in line, and that will take 2-3 years before you can actually get the surgery.

That’s how it was for my friend a few years ago at least.

figaro ,

Let’s say both then. Both the US and China are surveillance states, and that makes them both bad.

Btw just so you are aware, there is some underlying animosity toward people who defend China here. Usually people who defend China are just trying to deflect and try to say things like “BUT America does bad things!” While trying to make it seem like that somehow absolves China of genocide and mass surveillance.

The hard part for those people to grasp is that Americans are usually happy to say yes, America sucks. Any country that engages in those actions sucks. Diehard tankies on the other hand are incapable of seeing flaws in China/Russia/whatever country they feel the need to defend.

figaro ,

It’s ok, if anyone wants them back the smash brothers melee community has them all in the back of their car

figaro ,

Yeah honestly let’s make an example out of that horse

Lemmy.ml tankie censorship problem

I feel like we need to talk about Lemmy’s massive tankie censorship problem. A lot of popular lemmy communities are hosted on lemmy.ml. It’s been well known for a while that the admins/mods of that instance have, let’s say, rather extremist and onesided political views. In short, they’re what’s colloquially referred to...

figaro ,

I’m all for defederating from tankie instances. They suck.

figaro ,

Exactly. Why are we federated with people who deny genocides? Fuck all of that

figaro ,

Defederating sends a message that the world doesn’t like tankie bullshit

figaro ,

Is genocide denial not racism?

figaro ,

Honestly where’s my pipe, this is false advertising

figaro ,

Arguably, the average person will not care. My mom will probably buy one because, and I quote, “Your phone takes good pictures!”

Benchmark tests don’t matter to normal people

figaro ,

Couldn’t they just use cloudflare or something?
