I’m by no means pro-forced birth. But birth rate decline is a serious issue.

Yeah, it matters to capitalists who need an inexhaustible supply of exploitable workers.

For regular folk, it’s not a problem.

Regarding sublinks and feeling concerned about what is going on with it (lemmy.world)

Right now, I’m feeling concerned and wondering what is going on in regards to Sublinks here, since I have created a community for discussion on koalas about a week ago on here and have started and been doing work on it recently. But now I’m hearing about Sublinks and feeling concerned if I created it on the wrong instance or...

it’s Spring Boot too, which I’m fairly sure most of the industry is trying to move away from.

That would be news to me, someone in the industry, who works with Spring Boot.

Got anything to back that up?

chunkystyles ,

I really enjoyed the game, until it came to beating it on the harder difficulties. I lost steam when I had all the decks unlocked except for the ones that require bearing the higher difficulties. I did normal, and the next harder one.

chunkystyles ,

I really enjoyed that game, despite its faults, and despite the loud folks yelling about how it was the worst game ever. I put around 150 hours into it.

chunkystyles ,

DS3 is my favorite. I have to fight the urge to play it again fairly regularly. It’s an oddly soothing game to play.

I used to be very anti CVT. Then I bought a 3.6R Subaru Outback. I pull a 5x8 enclosed trailer with it and the biggest giveaway that you’re hauling anything is the gas mileage. So they ain’t all bad.

The BBC Won't Use AI to Promote Doctor Who Again After Being Yelled at by Fans (gizmodo.com)

The backlash was immediate, but it didn’t stop the BBC from using text generated by LLMs—and purportedly checked and copy-edited by a human before approval—in two marketing emails and mobile push notifications to advertise Doctor Who. But now, the corporation will stop the experimentation entirely after a wave of official...

I know, reddit. I couldn’t find a better source for this image for some reason.

There’s the “Seven Up!” series by the BBC. They filmed a bunch of kids at age 7, and then again at 14, 21, 28, etc.

The first was filmed in 1964 and 63 Up was filmed in 2019.

I can’t think of a time where there’s been too much basil. Only too little.

chunkystyles ,

got it in one day instead of the month and a half it really takes

This is the one part, that in a vacuum, is plausible.

There is way to get a passport same day, but it’s a gamble. You have to book an appointment and have a trip coming up like no longer than a week from that appointment.

I forget what it’s called, but I’ve done it.

chunkystyles ,

It for sure could, they’re talking completely out of their ass.

chunkystyles ,

If DF never existed, we would’ve missed out on so many amazing games it directly and indirectly inspired.

chunkystyles ,

you can still hit the toilet.

My world was changed when in my thirties, I realized that if you sit to pee, you don’t have to even open your eyes to aim.

No more missing, no more having to bother with lights. Game changer.

Diablo 3 is so much more fun than 4.

I started season 3 in D4, after skipping season 2 and not finishing season 1. I got to level 45 or so, read that D3’s newest season was awesome, so I figured I’d check it out. Never went back to D4.

D3, for all its faults, is so much more fun and engaging.

Starbucks accepted the union. The union won.

Not that I’m saying you should support Starbucks, but at least they stopped the union busting.

As a programmer, I do a lot more than just write code.

Saying that AI is going to take my job is kinda like saying a brick laying robot will take all the construction jobs.

chunkystyles ,

It’s not that I don’t think AI will replace jobs. It’s just that programming is so much more than just writing code.

An LLM, which is the best thing we have right now, doesn’t understand concepts. And most of my job is taking problems and figuring out the best solution given a whole massive heap of context. That’s not something an LLM will ever be able to do.

Until we have something like general AI, my job is safe.

When it’s really more of a game of inches…

You can only pick 2 games from steam to play for the rest of your life, what games are they? (sh.itjust.works)

I have a large library of steam games, but yet always come back to Garry mod and ravensfield. I keep coming back for the modded content and every other game is excellent, don’t get me wrong. But a lot of big games like RD2 and watchdogs 2 just seem like such a long time investment. What 2 games do you infinitely come back to?

chunkystyles ,

I came to say Dwarf Fortress. I could gush about it for a long time. It’s a very special game. This was the only game that came to mind for this question. Especially knowing that the brothers are only about half way done with all of the features they want to add to the game. And I’m not exaggerating here. They’re on version 50 and the consider version 100 to be feature complete.

I’m so glad they found another programmer.

chunkystyles ,

even a gacha pull.

I’m in agreement up to this point. The only gambling that feels good, the only gambling you really remember, is the gambling that pays off. And that’s part of what makes it so insidious.

Fixed price transactions, where you know exactly what you’re getting, are all OK in my book from a consumer perspective. Pay to win included even if that kind of thing makes the game itself bad.

So to put this in real terms: I think that Genshin Impact is worse from a consumer perspective than Star Citizen.

Gacha games are one of the few kinds of games I absolutely refuse to play.

PoE Single Board/Micro/Mini Computer/Server

I have an 8gb Raspberry Pi 4 that has been a workhorse for years. I keep it for my not intense but essential networking purposes, NetBoot.xyz, Homepage, etc., because I can run it over PoE (edit: Power over Ethernet), so it is always on as long as my network is up....

chunkystyles ,

I bought an N100 mini PC (not POE) as my new server a couple months ago. I really like it. That processor is great for power efficiency.

chunkystyles ,

it’s weird behavior to read through someone’s comment history

No it isn’t. It’s the best way to get an idea about the person you’re talking to. If their post history is nothing but obvious trolling, no reason to engage. If they never argue in good faith, don’t argue with them. Etc.

chunkystyles ,

I didn’t look at your history nor did I make any claims.

Four members of the Arkansas supreme court are trying to jump to different seats on the bench, a situation that could empower the conservative governor by granting her more appointments. (boltsmag.org)

Voters are filling two supreme court seats in two separate nonpartisan elections. Neither seat’s current occupant is seeking a new term, so at first glance it may look like the cycle will add two fresh faces to the court. But of the six candidates running for these two seats, four are already sitting justices on the...

chunkystyles ,

I lived in Arkansas almost my whole life. Moved out in 2021.

Arkansas is beautiful. The are some cool places in Arkansas. But overall, not great in a lot of ways.

chunkystyles ,

This is the biggest bummer of Lemmy so far for me. I miss the conversation.

I try to contribute, even if I’m the only one who comments.

chunkystyles ,

Would an army hell-bent on committing genocide roof-knock, drop leaflets, send warnings by telephone, messenger, social media and hacked TV stations?

This is all IDF propaganda. Even if they are doing all of these things consistently and precisely, what evidence is there that these efforts have any effect I’m reducing civilian casualties?

We’d need an honest and open accounting of casualties to check that. And the IDF will not do that.

chunkystyles ,

The world must be very simple for you.

Funny. You didn’t read past the first sentence of my comment.

chunkystyles ,

This is a textbook example of cherry picking.

chunkystyles ,

This is pathetic. Many of us here left reddit when it was clear the direction it was heading. You left because you were too toxic for even reddit. Good job. Now you’re bragging about using ChatGPT instead, on Lemmy, which has communities that are designed for the question you asked ChatGPT.

Grow up.

chunkystyles ,

I didn’t enumerate my issues with reddit, and I don’t intend to. That’s a perfect example of a straw man, though.

The only argument I’m making, and the only argument I care to talk about is that you’re toxic.

chunkystyles ,

Android started as trash

It started off by beating the pants off of iOS in terms of features, but was not nearly as polished.

Definitely not trash. But also not polished for the masses.

chunkystyles ,

I haven’t been to as many funerals as you have, but several course family members have died.

I hate funerals.

The best funeral I’ve ever been to wasn’t a funeral. Instead, the family got together at the daughter’s house and just visited for a few days. Then next spring, on what would have been their birthday, everyone gathered to memorialize them, and spread their ashes.

That was a much nicer way of handling it, in my opinion.

chunkystyles ,

You just used a bunch of words to describe “arguing semantics”. And I find it hilarious because you’re doing the exact same thing you accuse them of.

But also, they’re right, you should drop this pointless argument.

chunkystyles ,

Ok, so from the article, the doctor attempted to puke that baby out and decapitated in the process. They had to do a c section to get the body out separately. The doctor then just tells the parents the baby died, not how it died. The parents find out at the nursing home the baby was decapitated.

So they hire a pathologist to do a post mortem analysis on the body and the pathologist POSTS GRAPHIC PHOTOS OF THE BODY ON HIS INSTAGRAM.

chunkystyles ,

I enjoy his normal content. I hate this format where the camera man talks to him.

chunkystyles ,

Any of Dan Olson’s videos will fit the bill, probably.

Here’s two of his best, in my opinion.

Trump is much worse, both on Israel and in general, but that’s not the fucking point!

Except that the only two actual choices for the next 4 year cycle are Trump and Biden. Do that really us the point.

Putting your progressive politics focus on the president is a losing game, anyway. Praxis is local.

chunkystyles ,

When it comes to American politics and actually affecting change, I think the energy is best invested in supporting progressive candidates from the bottom (local) up (national). Go to the primaries and vote for any candidate you can that is closer to your views if there are any. But when the time comes to vote for Biden, Trump, or abstain, anything other than voting for Biden is a vote for Trump, who is far worse in every conceivable way.

chunkystyles ,

Anyone who didn’t vote Biden deserves trump.

chunkystyles ,

Hey yo, bozo, you think Trump would be better?

WARNING [Article from NYTimes, WARNING (04:54): Video From ITV News of Palestinians Being Shot] Evidence of Israeli Atrocities in Gaza Continue to Emerge [10:34 | Jan 27 2024 | Glenn Greenwald] (www.youtube.com)

Glenn Greenwald is a journalist, former constitutional lawyer, and author of four New York Times bestselling books on politics and law.

chunkystyles ,

Greenwald was the reporter who helped Edward Snowden. Whether you think that makes Greenwald a hero or just a supremely lucky reporter is up to you. Since then, he’s been slowly but steadily treading the “why I left the Left” grift track. You can occasionally find him talking to right wing news outlets like Fox News on all the reasons why the Left is bad, but conveniently never critiquing the right.

In 2022, Greenwald did a softball interview with Alex Jones as a PR stunt for Jones’ documentary, “Alex’s War”. That’s the even I referenced specifically.

It’s worth noting that Greenwald is a gay man, who has a husband, and they have two children together. This makes him cozying up to fascists all the more disgusting because those people abhor people like him and his family.

My opinion is that Greenwald is a spineless coward who will do anything for money.

chunkystyles ,

My introduction to Dan was this series of videos youtu.be/qzk9N7dJBec?si=jXBVVXwaYM-izJ6a

They’re a lot of fun. Dan tended to do more film analysis than he does now. But his videos have always been high quality and interesting.

IMO, this is his magnum opus youtu.be/YQ_xWvX1n9g?si=vtqK9do28bcoRkwn

Yes, it is a 2+ hour video about NFTs, but it’s phenomenal. I’ve watched it all the way through at least 3 times, and I feel like I glean a little bit more from it each time.
