Hey now there’s nothing weird about being completely unable to focus under fluorescent lights.

Pencilnoob ,

Definitely include a graph of shareholder value overlayed on top.

Sarcasm aside, maybe we should have a graph that also shows:

  • average hours worked a year
  • average number of sunsets a person sees before they die
  • average hours spent with loved ones per year
  • average rent
  • average hours worked to pay for groceries
  • average hours spent doomscrolling on social media
  • average student loan debt payments
  • suicide rate
  • average zoom calls a year
  • happiness

And see that by basically all metrics we are working more, paid less, more depressed, more stressed, and unhappy.

I learned how to type with this, at the age of 22 as a full time software engineer! I never knew how to touch type, but then I somehow landed a software engineering job. I figured I needed to learn, so I downloaded this and played it so much. Good times.

Pencilnoob , (edited )

I have a lot of experience as a software engineer in the industry, and used to teach public middle school. I would love to teach a course or two a year because education is a passion of mine, but only have a BA of Education, do you think it’s worth applying to teach at my local community college? I saw my local college had a requirement of a master’s degree in CS, which I do not have.

I mean, right now I’m shopping for a house with a decent sized property so I can grow a permaculture food forest to get fresh healthy veggies and fruit.

20’ of lawn is like enough for two rows of fruit trees and berry bushes

Pencilnoob ,

I’d prefer it over just a grass yard or being right up on a road having to listen to road sounds at all hours

Pencilnoob ,

Chainsaw and a skylight. A big one too, like one of these

And yeah, yeah, I’ve heard they are a pain to maintain and break easily. I don’t care, I’ll fix it every week if that means I get a balcony and fresh air every day.

Pencilnoob ,

Ah yes, that would make sense.

I’m over here thinking like a firefighter trying to ventilate a roof, not like a contractor trying to install a window.

Pencilnoob ,

Oh man I work with one of the PhDs who invented several of the space weather formulas. He’s got books about it. I want to show him this so bad, but I don’t think he would find it funny 😭

Maybe he’d laugh at the evil wizards part.

Pencilnoob ,

You know what, everyone’s saying is cringe to bring up being a maintainer. But I say be proud of it!

You volunteer on this project for free, to build us this awesome place to be. Thanks for doing that, keep it up, be the best contributor you can! I’m happy to have Lemmy, thanks for helping make it possible!

Pencilnoob ,

Oh man this good me laughing way too hard, well done

What are some free interests/things/hobbies you can do in the city?

I live alone and I’m just wasting away my time here. It’s actually making me very depressed to be honest. I do live in the city which makes think there ought to be at least something to do out here. Though I can’t really afford to spent money on it every day....

Pencilnoob ,

CrossFit, running club, November project, hiking club, board game clubs, DND clubs, Meetup.com events. Coed sports leagues like: disc golf, infinite Frisbee, soccer.

There’s also things like live figure drawing, music jam clubs, acting in local plays.

Pencilnoob ,

That sucks, you’re doing the right thing. Did you consider getting the tapes of who did it from the store cameras? Although it’s probably too late now. They should be punished for their toxic behavior.

There definitely are people who’s empathy hasn’t improved. Maybe two-thirds of the population’s empathy has improved, but the remainder became even more sociopathic. They get mad when people wear masks, when billionaires get taxed, or when medical services are given to homeless people. There is a group that just lives on fear and rage. They somehow think that keying someone’s car who wears a mask is justified because…? Maybe just that they saw people wearing masks during the pandemic and concluded masks cause pandemics.

Ok but what crow time comic,

Edit, Crow Time is amazing

Pencilnoob ,

Absolutely meirl. I keep making frame rate drops on games, but my CPU is … Checks date… top of the line 2012 tech!

Pencilnoob ,

I felt the same effect about age 28. It was like I woke up out of a fog. So many things made sense. I also started getting a lot better sleep and exercise by then too.

Pencilnoob , (edited )

Bidet attachment for a toilet. You can get them cheap, or spend a bit more for heated seats, warmed water, fans for drying, etc. Best bathroom decision ever.

Countertop electric water distiller. For a reasonable price you can get a countertop water distiller that runs a gallon for like $0.15. No more microplastics, chlorine, ammonia, lead, or facial matter in your drinking water! Tastes SO GOOD, nothing like the plastic filled distilled water from the store, blech. Every time we make a batch, we’ll smell the sticky residue left in the heating chamber and gag. It is nasty stuff. In our tap water, gross. Clean water for me please! Makes our coffee, tea, and kumbucha taste a lot better too.

Getting into a healthy BMI and daily exercise is pretty epic too. You’ll just feel better every day.

As climate change gets worse, having resilience like stored food and water will be helpful to deal with more frequent natural disasters. No sense bothering with fancy meal packets, a couple dozen big cans of dried beans will go a long way if there’s a shelter in place order.

Pencilnoob , (edited )

I’m putting the water in glass containers, so no need to worry about it leeching materials. Also, I am positive I get all the micronutrients (the paper your cited refers to magnesium and iron) I need from vegetables, without needing to resort to tap water that contains high levels of microplastics. I also brush my teeth with floride, so no need to worry about dental caries.

Seems like it increases cancer risk, but it’s the cheapest way we have to sanitize water so

From 2013 to 2017 I lost 60 pounds and I’ve kept it off since.

I tried everything to lose that fat.

I’ve tried at different times: keto, calorie counting, intermittent fasting, low fat, low carb, Soylent, cutting alcohol, high fiber, if it fits your macros, power lifting, CrossFit, running, vegan, vegetarian, carnivore, and Renaissance periodization.

What’s actually worked consistently for losing and keeping it off? Simple. Intermittent fasting 20/4 with low carb during the week, free cheat weekends, and no alcohol ever. With that protocol I can control my weight to the pound, consistently, and I’ve held it there for over 5 years.

It’s such a great feeling to be totally in control of it.

Pencilnoob ,

Thanks you made me laugh so hard I woke up my partner

Pencilnoob ,

The third movie be like “Plato’s cave, nah, more like Plato’s RAVE”

Illuminating manuscripts on vellum November

“You’re going the wrong way!!”

“How does he know where we’re going?”

“Oh yeah”

Bashir realizes they are going to crash into two other ships

“AHHHHHHH”

ship shudders as it scrapes between the two incoming ships. Sparks fly dramatically, and Bashir looks over to see O’Brien dressed in a devil costume laughing maniacally

Pencilnoob ,

So true. What an insane system where teachers have to pay for their own supplies.

On a darker note, male teachers are constantly harassed by parents and other teachers if they teach any grade lower than eight grade. Dark stuff.

Our education system is an absolute mess.

Pencilnoob ,

Mmm the idea of the Waltons not getting as much profit and poor Americans getting to keep more makes me irrationally happy

Pencilnoob ,

It’s hard to remember that not that long ago it was super rare to eat any food not from within a hundred miles. The idea of this unusual canned soup was probably pretty wild.

Pencilnoob , (edited )
  • green peppers
  • hummus
  • watermelon
  • tomato + basil
  • mint pesto
  • tomato + pesto
  • tomato + lettuce
  • roasted jalapeno (or other peppers) without seeds
  • bread and butter pickles (they’re sweet)
  • spicy pickles
  • mustard seed spread (not that nuclear yellow crap)
  • kimchi
  • apple slices
  • grilled zucchini

  • any jam (Berry jam too)
  • hot pepper relish
  • hot sauce
  • mashed sweet potato
  • chopped candied nuts

  • a dressing of oil, parsley, mint blended until thick

Holy cow I’m so hungry right now for all of this

Pencilnoob ,

This sounds amazing

Pencilnoob OP ,

Amazon ads for “gamer” stuff that is otherwise very femme coded happens when Amazon thinks you are trans and serves you ads about it (presumably before the recipient knows)

Pencilnoob ,

I’m pretty sure this is an exact replica of my last fortress

Pencilnoob OP ,

This was for that hero still waiting on their daily update

Just got back from Boulder, did South Boulder Peak which was 8549’. The climb to Bear Peak just below South Boulder was the best part, it was so steep, we climbed 3000’ in two miles.
