What’s really BS is the professors who don’t teach jack shit during class and just expect students to do all the reading on their own time, then fill the actual class time with busy work. That was wayyy too common when I was in college.

The whole point of college is supposed to be to have highly qualified individuals giving you individualized instruction on advanced topics. That’s why it costs literally tens of thousands of dollars. Yet more and more the professors are losers who couldn’t hack it in their fields and the “lessons” are just there to fill time while you’re expected to do most of the actual learning on your own.

I’d say about 10% of my industry knowledge when I graduated came from my classes, the other 90% was independent study or picking stuff up “on the job” at internships and jobs I worked outside of class. Basically I burned countless hours and tens of thousands of dollars just to get the piece of paper at the end. And talking to colleagues over the years, that’s not at all an uncommon experience

bitsplease ,

I didn’t get it until I read this comment and thought more closely about it - so I guess put me in the stupid camp lol

bitsplease ,

I won’t pretend that luck wasn’t a big factor, but my wife worked at a senior living facility and I managed to avoid catching it. Hell my wife even caught it, but she moved into the guest room and we just treated it like a clean room

bitsplease ,

stop getting all your info about AI and it’s current/upcoming capabilities from mainstream news media my dude lol

We’re nowhere close to what you describe, and even we were, that wouldn’t be the same thing as “open source”, since you could only do it to code you have access to. You couldn’t - for example, use it to get a copy of the Reddit/Facebook server-side source code

bitsplease ,

In my defense, apparently my phone auto corrects “its” to “it’s” 🙄

Though that’s probably because I misuse it all the time myself lol

bitsplease ,

Unfortunately if you want to play games with 0 hassle, Windows is still the only real option. Proton is awesome, but there are still games I want to play that either don’t work (or don’t work well), or require workarounds to get working

bitsplease ,

Yeah, the better question is - whose actually watching? Trump is obviously going to be the nominee unless he’s literally forced off the ballot, and if that happens it’s just going to be chaos because I guarentee he’s just going to continue running as a write in candidate

bitsplease ,

Yeah no one can argue that it isn’t a giant mismanaged, drastically overdue mess, but it’s literally the only game of its kind right now, I haven’t played in a little while now, but earlier on I put easily hundreds of hours into it

That being said, God I wish they’d get their shit together and get the damn thing finished… At least just SQ42…

bitsplease ,

OK, take a delivery mission from the crowded space station you’re currently on, load a rover onto your ship (by which I mean actually load a rover onto your ship, not just press “equip rover” in a menu) . Walk onto your ship (again, meaning actually walk onto your ship, not just load straight into the cockpit), travel to your fly down onto the planets surface without a single loading screen, head down to your rover bay, get in and drive over to the delivery location to deliver the package. All without one single loading screen at any point in the process.

The closest I can think of to that is space engineers, except space engineers doesn’t really have “missions” in the same way SC does and the station would be a ghost town, and all the ships/rovers would look like LEGOs lol

Don’t get me wrong, the game is very unfinished and even by alpha standards it isn’t at all perfect and there’s a 50/50 chance that at some point in the process above you’ll get a 30k or some other game breaking bug, but I don’t see how you can have played the game like you say and not think that it’s doing things other games aren’t. There’s no other game that I’m currently aware of that actually provides the same immersive experience (when it works) as SC.

Whether or not those extra bits of immersion actually matter to you is an entirely separate question, but they are present and a good measure further than any other scifi game I’m aware of. If I’m wrong pleasepleaseplease fill me in, because I fucking love that shit in SC but can’t deal with the bugginess for more than short intervals lol

bitsplease ,

That’s awesome, but the real question is - will we be able to buy one for MSRP?

bitsplease ,

It’s literally a core facet of dumbledores character that he’s always genial and calm, even in the face of total disaster. It’s part of what made him an intimidating wizard.

Even besides that though, why wouldn’t he ask calmly? One of two things are true

  1. Harry did put his name in the goblet and is lying about it, in which case going full on “DIDYOUPUTYOURNAMEINTHEGOBLETOFFIRE!?!?” is only likely to put Harry on the defensive and make him less likely to own up.
  2. Harry didnt put his name in the goblet and is being setup by voldy or his buddies. In which case Harry is a victim and should be handled as such. At this point Dumbledore had very good reasons to think this was the more likely of the two.

Dont get me wrong, if you wanna talk about JKRs shitty writing, I’ll happily join you, but this is actually an example of good writing on her part, given that the character in question is supposed to be the smartest wizard alive, it makes perfect sense that he’d react rationally instead of lashing out emotionally

bitsplease ,

As I recall (it’s been a while) you have that backwards, Snape was the OG at blocking mind reading, but only reasonably proficient at doing it himself, whereas Dumbledore was able to weedle memories out of people that they didn’t even know they had

bitsplease ,

I agree, I think it’s likely that he only asked for the benefit of the others in the room

bitsplease ,

Yeah the people who are responding to this saying “who cares, it’s just corporations being harmed” are thinking too small picture. The corporations aren’t going even harmed that much by this, not on a global scale, they’ll just shut down the most affected stores. Then who suffers? All the residents of those communities.

Look, I don’t like big mega corps like Target and Walmart, but the fact is that they can afford to sell goods to people at way lower prices than small retailers. Don’t misunderstand me, I know that’s because they’ve put a stranglehold around suppliers and built giant monopolies, but the effect is the same. The world would be a much better place if giant retail monopolies all disappeared, but it would have terrible consequences for them to only dissappear from the poorest and most crime laden communities

bitsplease ,

You don’t. Part of love is openness, you can’t love a person while not being willing to share the fact that you love them. Pretty much by definition

bitsplease ,

If you’re asking this because you’re considering starting - dont. I vaped for a little while in college, started out with the 0 nicotine juices, but after trying a few nicotine ones I found I liked the “throat hit” you got from the nicotine versions, as well as the head high.

One day I lost my vape and that’s when I realized how unexpectedly I got hooked. I stopped then and there and it’s only because I hadn’t been at it too long that I was able to quit cold turkey and permanently (10 years since then now).

The fact is that on the “pro” side, you get a mild buzz, and only when you’re vaping stronger concentrations than you’re used to and that’s about it. I started because I thought it was cool and it was a conversation starter at parties (vaping was more novel then and college freshmen are easy to impress), but I’m so glad I knocked that shit off before it really got it’s hooks into me.

On the con side its expensive, unhealthy (only considered “healthy” when compared to sucking smoke), uncool to everyone over the age of 20, and highly addictive (if using nicotine, but even if you plan to stick with 0 nicotine juice, you may eventually cave, I did.)

Basically there’s very little reason to start and a lot of really compelling reasons to never pick it up

6 months or so, I’d say

Trump and company liable for fraud in New York lawsuit, judge rules (www.cnbc.com)

A judge on Tuesday ruled that Donald Trump and his company are liable for fraud by misstating the true values of multiple real estate properties for years and thus grossly overstating the former president’s net worth by billions of dollars....

bitsplease ,

What are “business certificates” and what does it mean for Trump to have them revoked?

bitsplease ,

Because despite how the internet likes to talk, you can’t generalize an entire generation in a single lemmy comment while still being accurate

bitsplease ,

I mean, I’m not anti-sex-worker by any means, but hero?

Genuinely curious how you came to that conclusion

bitsplease ,

The thing is though, Low effort, high special effect action, action over plot moviesis nothing new, before marvel it was transformers and so on all the way back to shoot em up westerns at the dawn of cinema.

Its not like before the MCU, you’re average movie goer was watching super artistic cerebral movies, and comic book movies took that all away, like this guy is acting

bitsplease ,

YNAB

Always takes like 20 seconds to load a super simple web app

Idk about you, but a really spicy pad Thai is 🔥

bitsplease ,

I don’t pretend to be an expert on thai food, so I can’t speak to the “traditional” way to prepare it, but in my experience pass thai being spicy is about 50/50 at restaurants I’ve been to, and there certainly isn’t anything wrong with asking it to be made spicy

bitsplease ,

I mean, I’d say a dish that’s 100 years old is fairly old and customary at this point. Not ancient or anything, but 100 years is nothing to sneeze at

bitsplease ,

This has always felt like one of those arguments that just kicks the can.

Yes, there are 100% some homeless people who are in such a bad place that they’d outright refuse a home even if you gave it to them free of charge (or would immediately sell it for drug money/burn it down because it’s filled with alien Spyware or something), but I’d wager that if you actually gave a lot of these people a stable home, and food in their fridge so they weren’t literally fighting for their lives on the street, they’d be able to self improve a lot more than people give them credit for.

A lot of homeless are just people who had one bad turn after another and are just unable to break the cycle because our system really isn’t built to let them do so. I think we should also be providing mental Healthcare and addiction support to these people, but saying that should come before giving them a sense of stability and safety is ass backwards imo

bitsplease ,

Even back in those days, the leaders rarely put themselves in any danger

bitsplease ,

No one will convince me that there isn’t money laundering going on there. There’s just no way an actual person looked at that and thought it is worth that kind of money

bitsplease ,

I can guarentee you that if #2 happened, conservatives would be in absolute uproar

bitsplease ,

I think a big part of the difference is that most people get addicted to cigarettes just by being around it, rather than seeking it out. Cigarettes don’t get you high/drunk (well OK, you get a small buzz early on, but nothing like weed or alcohol).

People will seek out weed even when it’s illegal because the risk is worth the reward (to them), because it comes with an intense high you can’t really get anywhere else. I don’t see nearly as many people seeking out cigarettes in the same way, unless they’re already hooked.

I don’t think it will “solve” the cigarette problem, but I do think that prohibition for cigarettes won’t go quite the same route as prohibition for weed and alcohol.

Now, whether I want the government to be able to ban recreational substances just because they think it’s bad (or use that as an excuse) is another question

Archaeologists in Zambia discover oldest wooden structure in the world, dating to 476,000 years ago (www.msn.com)

Archaeologists have discovered the oldest evidence yet of a wooden structure crafted by the hands of a human ancestor. Two tree trunks, notched like Lincoln Logs, were preserved at the bottom of the Kalambo River in Zambia. If the logs’ estimated 476,000-year-old age is correct, it means that woodworking might predate the...

bitsplease ,

I guess that river might have been following a different path then?

Practically guarenteed, few rivers follow the same course for even a hundred years, let alone hundreds of thousanda

bitsplease ,

And yet this sounds exactly like the kind of “more righteous than thou” condescending comment I saw on reddit all the time. But when you’re doing it, it’s alright, yeah?

bitsplease ,

Gatekeepers got tired of being (rightly) made fun of, so they made a new meme format that makes them seem justified

bitsplease ,

Um, I think you’re in the wrong thread - we’re talking about beer…

I agree with you though, it’s just not relavent lol

bitsplease ,

Quick tip - if the majority of people who read something find it ambiguous, it is. Plain and simple - especially for languages like English that don’t have a central authority for setting language rules.

Meta is bolstering perks like happy hours and company swag as it pushes staff to return to office, despite its 'year of efficiency' (www.businessinsider.com)

Meta is bolstering perks like happy hours and company swag as it pushes staff to return to office, despite its ‘year of efficiency’::The company has revived a number of employee perks, according to Bloomberg, including branded t-shirts, laundry services, and free haircuts.

bitsplease ,

I think it’s an age thing yeah, but also it just comes down to circumstances. Id imagine that the people who are just packing up and moving to different countries every year for work don’t have a large family/friends support network around them

For me, moving to a different country would be a nightmare in more ways than I can count, I’ve got pets I’d have to arrange transport for, a wife I’d have to get on board (can’t even imagine if I had kids), all our family and friends are from the state we live in today.

But if you already had family/friends in that country, or if you were solo and your fakily/friends were already a distance away, then it wouldn’t be so bad

bitsplease ,

Define “the pay was good”.

For what they’re known payscales say they’d pay a dev with my experience? No way in hell. It’s only slightly more than I make now, and I’d have to go back to the office and work for an evil company (though I’m in Insuretech today, so that bit might just be a lateral move…). Plus I live in a low CoL area today, so a bit more money would actually mean a substantial QoL drop.

Now if we’re talking stupid money, like $600k/year, then yeah I’d suck up going to the office and abandon my morals. Frankly anyone here who says they wouldn’t do it for any salary is kidding themselves

bitsplease ,

Wait, was that not ironic? I swear to god I thought that was a joke lol

bitsplease ,

Honestly I used to love these ridiculous morning radio shows when I commuted lol - was super sad when my favorite one switched to music only

They’re ridiculous and corny, but also fun

bitsplease ,

Wasn’t that last year?

bitsplease ,

the surprising thing there isn’t that they went back on their word, but that they said it in the first place.

Seriously, how could an OS company seriously believe they’d never need or want to release a new major version

bitsplease ,

Are people drinking less beer, or just more local/craft beers? Because my experience has been the latter. I honestly don’t know anyone under the age of 40 who regularly drinks the “big name beers”, not when they have other options at least.

bitsplease ,

Guarantee almost every single conservative boycotter switched to another beer brand owned by InBev and didn’t even realize it lmfao.

My uncle was literally complaining about Bud Light being “Woke” while drinking a Space Dust at a family gathering when all this was still fresh lol. I chose to not say anything for comedy reasons lol

bitsplease ,

That’d make sense, I just remember visiting my brother in-law around christmas last year and he was playing it and telling me about the controversy about it being the same game.

But yeah everything blurs together lately, don’t know if it’s because everything is so chaotic, or just because I’m getting old lol

bitsplease ,

Also have to remember that a fairly large portion of “local” craft breweries, at least in terms of sales volume, are owned by corporations like InBev

This is a fair point, I was a bit dissapointed when I learned that my go-to beer that I thought was from an (admittedly large) craft brewery was just an InBev subsidiary (Space Dust)

bitsplease ,

Right but they could have done that without promising that 10 would be the last Windows version. Let’s be honest, everyone is already locked into their ecosystem outside of enthusiasts and people with Apple Hardware. If you want a non-mac laptop/desktop, unless you go well out of your way, you’re almost certain to end up with a Windows PC, they didn’t need the “last version” gimmick to keep people on Windows.

Hell, a lot of non-techy people who are already used to using Windows would rather not use a computer than learn to use a new OS. It’s easy to forget how tech illiterate the average person is

bitsplease ,

I don’t think it’d work all that well to be frank. You’d wind up with dozens of pages for each subject since each instance can have their own. You could probably come up with a distinct federated solution that might work though, where the servers are federated but the content is shared. Not sure how that would look in practice though, and how you could keep instances from diverging

bitsplease ,

That feels like a pretty big false equivalency. There’s a huge consumer demand for cocaine, that’s the whole reason cartels exist.

No consumer wants behavior driven marketing, it’s forced on them for the benefit of companies. If ads were outlawed right now, I doubt you’d find any communities online trying to get bootleg ads working on their machine lol
