It was a private plane with a guy onboard that everyone in Russia knows is a dead man walking. Every person on that plane knew that being within 500m of the guy was a constant hazard.

If someone asks how to calculate a living wage or a family wage, tell them to ask the Army. They have all kinds of formulas for determining how much you get paid based on your family situation.

ashok36 ,

I have a colleague that spends 90% of their time out of the office on trains and on airplanes. They need to connect to an RDP server, answer emails, and do some InDesign work. Our IT dept manager has the same attitude as you and will only issue them a beefy laptop that weighs twice as much as a macbook and has half the battery. My colleague has tried to explain that compute power is not their primary concern but the IT manager won’t listen because he doesn’t have the perspective to imagine what it’s like to do someone else’s job.

ashok36 ,

I never said that no one else uses Macs in our office. Our entire marketing department and half the executives use Macs. For whatever reason our IT guy just has a ‘sales guys don’t get macs’ personal policy it seems.

If you think that’s too stupid to believe, join the club.

ashok36 ,

Unfortunately there are quite a few of us that seem to just like telling users no.

Describes this guy pretty much to a T.

ashok36 ,

No one is telling him to do it again. We are just wondering what connection there is between having heart attacks and the vaccines. There’s a slight risk of myocarditis from the vaccine (many vaccines have the same risk). It seems a bit of a stretch to recommend against the vaccine even then though. The risk of myocarditis is much higher when infected VS vaccinated. OP is rolling the dice that they will never get infected which… Is possible but I wouldn’t bet on it.

ashok36 ,

No, there’s a manual release. It’s normally hidden but it’s there in case of the battery dying.

ashok36 ,

Fuck this bible thumpin reactionary hillbilly dork.

“But he goes after both sides!”

No, He punches down on poor people. Fuck off with that.

ashok36 ,

The video they put out yesterday addressed the overwork problems. They were clear in their messaging that they are going to back off on the number of videos they make, or at least that’s what they said. Time will tell.

ashok36 ,

Dude, crimes have been alleged. You do not say “sorry” in writing while a criminal investigation is looming.

ashok36 ,

Why? What could you possibly be missing at this point if you just stopped using it?

ashok36 ,

The only play for them at this point would be to somehow remove Willis and replace her with someone that will tank the case on purpose.

ashok36 ,

Someone still has to try the case. If they cleaned house at the Fulton da office they could have some sycophant show up to court and literally just tank the entire case.

ashok36 ,

Yeah, blaming poor people for other poor people’s problems is definitely bootlicking.

The idea of starting off being ‘crowd funded’ to put out your first couple of releases until the big money investors decide you’re worth risking anything on is how almost all artists across mediums do things in a capitalist system. As someone from a music background, the parallels between a band scraping together enough money and time to self produce a demo or an EP vs. an indie studio working on a game after work hours is pretty strong.

Honestly, the patron model is probably the best solution that I’ve seen. The problem is that it’s become so tied into patrons receiving weekly updates or rewards that it’s hard to turn that viewpoint towards longer term projects that don’t necessarily lend themselves to those kinds of short term updates.

ashok36 ,

Tesla is as much a battery company as a car company, yeah. If they can sell batteries to all the other car makers they still win.

ashok36 ,

It’s not just that. If the Pi Foundation has to make a choice between fulfilling an order for 100 pis for a company so that the company can keep making products and meeting payroll vs. 100 hobbyists that want to make their own one-off project, which is the more moral use of resources?

Yeah, those companies should probably not have chosen a pi board to power their products but that’s only noticeable in hindsight.

ashok36 ,

Still useful, and possibly opens the door to a new branch of research using similar methods which might result in even more discoveries in the future.

Even if this turns out to be a complete nothingburger then as long as there wasn’t any fraud involved, it’s still useful for the future.

ashok36 ,

I didn’t notice any improvement. I’m running a RTX3070 with a Ryzen 5 3600x at 4k/medium. Especially in the last realm, my framerates are barely hitting 30. Even in Ward 13, I have rates as low as mid 20s from time to time. The game is fun but for my configuration at least, the performance is super uneven.

ashok36 ,

So, the reason the judge made an exemption is because doctors were basically saying, “We have no idea how to provide care in these situations and not break the law”.

The Republicans response is, again basically, “The doctors have no reason to be worried about being prosecuted so the exemption isn’t needed in the first place.”

They could fix it in 5 minutes by passing a law specifically providing protections but they won’t because any reasonable law would allow at-will abortions too because, say it with me, ABORTIONS ARE MEDICAL CARE.

ashok36 ,

The guy is a software engineer that was super into Second Life. I’m guessing he’s seen his share of forums.

ashok36 ,

In his wildest dreams, Paul Verhoeven could not have foreseen propaganda like this. I bet Camus would get a kick out of it though. War is absurd. Lean into it.

ashok36 ,

Pretty much this. The democrats put their resources into passing infrastructure and inflation bills and investigating the events around Jan 6.

Everyone agrees that the Trump kids got up to no good but the relative seriousness of their crimes compared to everything else Trump did was pretty small.

Since the Republicans have no actual dirt on Joe Biden and are about as capable of passing legislation as a bag of ornery chipmunks, they latch onto these ‘scandals’ that would barely be a blip for any Republican administration.

ashok36 ,

If anyone hasn’t watched the documentary yet, I highly recommend it just for the recurring sight-gag. It killed me, every time.

Excel’s esports revolution is coming back to ESPN this week (www.theverge.com)

The contestants in an event like the Excel World Championship are given what’s called a “case,” which could be almost anything. One case from last year’s competition required each player to figure out all the possible outcomes and associated rewards for a slot machine; another required modeling how a videogame character...

ashok36 ,

OP, you might want to clarify that your spoiler alert is for last year’s competition winner. I was pretty miffed until I re-read.

social programs at the expense of the hardworking taxpayer

Imagine that: Paying taxes and getting social programs in return. What a novel concept.

Wisconsin lawsuit asks new liberal-controlled Supreme Court to toss Republican-drawn maps (apnews.com)

A lawsuit filed Wednesday asks Wisconsin’s newly liberal-controlled state Supreme Court to throw out Republican-drawn legislative maps as unconstitutional, the latest legal challenge of many nationwide that could upset political boundary lines before the 2024 election.

I like this graphic but I wish it didn’t use red and blue. I feel like this would be more effective in showing republicans how bad districting hurts everyone if it was green and yellow or orange and purple.

CNN Poll: Percentage of Republicans who think Biden's 2020 win was illegitimate ticks back up near 70% (edition.cnn.com)

The share of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents who believe that President Joe Biden’s 2020 election win was not legitimate has ticked back up, according to a new CNN poll fielded throughout July. All told, 69% of Republicans and Republican-leaners say Biden’s win was not legitimate, up from 63% earlier this...

ashok36 ,

Two possibilities: Either more people are buying into conspiracy theories or more people are declining to identify as Republicans which makes the percentage go up. I’m hopeful it’s the latter but fearful it’s the latter.

ashok36 ,

The fact that it was a Chinese team that made the discovery may be the kickstart an ‘arms race’ needs in order for the US to put significant resources behind the development of RTSCs. It’s hard to pour millions of dollars into a hole if you want see the bottom of it. If there’s a viable path and it looks like China may beat the US to the finish line, the US will throw more resources at the problem.

DeSantis-controlled Disney World district abolishes diversity, equity initiatives (apnews.com)

Diversity, equity and inclusion programs were abolished Tuesday from Walt Disney World’s governing district, now controlled by appointees of Gov. Ron DeSantis, in an echo of the Florida governor’s agenda which has championed curtailing such programs in higher education and elsewhere.

ashok36 ,

If they did, it’d be the only thing on their platform.

Seriously. In 2020 they literally ran without a platform other than, “Whatever Trump wants, that’s what we want.”

Just, full on authoritarianism.

ashok36 ,

They’re the single largest employer. They don’t employ most of his constituents.

That said, Florida relies on tourism to keep the state budget afloat. Disney is a big part of that.

ashok36 ,

Dems and billionaire spoiler candidates. Name a more iconic duo.

Get a Deezer account and use Deemix to ‘archive’ all the music you’d be sad if it went away. Yknow, just in case.

He’s the definition of “so open-minded his brain fell out”.

ashok36 ,

Don’t forget that he knew a substantial amount of them were armed and dangerous. His security detail told him so when he insisted they remove the magnetometers to let the armed crazy people fill in his rally more. The Jan 6 committee showed this during their hearings.

ashok36 ,

Nancy Pelosi would absolutely have been killed if they got their hands on her. AOC too, probably.

ashok36 ,

Room temperature and pressure. The two are intrinsically linked.

ashok36 ,

My guess is that it won’t be. Nintendo is a toy company. They’ve never once just done an iterative version of a console. There’s always some new gimmick, usually based around input, that they have to fuck with that makes everything incompatible.

ashok36 ,

NES - The original

SNES - Changed the controller

N64 - Changed the controller

Gamecube - Changed the controller, moved to discs

Wii - Changed the controller, added motion controls

WiiU - Changed the controller, added screen to controller with ‘console’ kept as a separate box

Switch - Integrated the screen and the console into one form factor

Meanwhile, look at the XBOX platform. After going to the 360 controller, the form factor of ‘standard’ gamepad + separate console box has been the same for 3 generations now without any significant changes other than more powerful hardware. The Kinect was an attempt to encroach on Nintendo’s motion-controls turf but it, like the Playstation Move, withered on the vine when first party products intended for them turned out to be turds.

Every day, Demolition Man seems more and more prescient.

ashok36 ,

I’ve wondered how long we’ll go before universities across the country start refusing to accept Florida high school graduates because their coursework does not meet basic acceptance criteria.

This is exactly what DeSantis and his ilk want. Conservatives are scared shitless of their kids going off to university and finding out that their parents and schools have been lying to them their whole life.

Solution: Ensure no out-of-state schools will accept your students so they’re stuck in your shitty system forever.

Zelenskiy Warns 'War' Coming To Russia After Drone Attack Closes Moscow's Vnukovo Airport (www.rferl.org)

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has warned that it was “inevitable” that “war” would come to Russia after authorities there were forced to temporarily close a busy Moscow airport following an overnight drone attack on the capital.

ashok36 ,

I worry what this will justify Putin doing.

Sorry but, what? Putin has been happy to commit war crimes including genocide, torture, mass killings, and abduction of children. Putin has no need or wish to justify anything. He can just go on Russian TV and say whatever he wants and no one in Russia is going to question it.

Russians are not westerners. Even if most Russians superficially look like westerners, They do not think and they do not act like westerners. Stop ascribing westerner logic and motivations to their actions.

ashok36 ,

There’s a pretty big difference between asking a company to remove misinformation and ordering them to do so via court order or at the point of a gun. At the end of the day, Facebook agreed with the government that the content was harmful and/or broke their TOS.

ashok36 ,

While that’s generally true, this case is completely unprecedented. Ex-president charged with stealing top secret documents, obstruction of justice, and who knows what else before we’re done.

Not to mention the other indictments he’s got coming up for election interference and inciting a coup attempt.

No matter how lenient you may want to be, you absolutely cannot set a precedent that the punishment for attempting a coup of the United States government is… confinement to your luxury resort where you can continue to gin up another coup attempt at your leisure. You have to make an example of him or you just invite a repeat of the same attempt over and over again.

ashok36 ,

he has to lose the election (which is more or less a toss-up)

I don’t see how Trump wins in 2024. He lost, badly, in 2020 and that’s with the incumbent advantage. Now Biden has the incumbent advantage and isn’t restricted to campaigning from his basement because some asshole fucked up the response to a pandemic. Meanwhile Trump is hemorrhaging cash paying for lawyers to defend him from multiple ongoing and imminent criminal indictments. He’ll find time to hold his stupid rallies every couple of days but he will be distracted and unfocused (even for Trump). He’s performed worse than the last time every election since 2016 (2018 lost the house, 2020 lost the presidency and the senate, 2022 all his favored candidates lost and Rs didn’t get the Senate back and barely won the House).

The 2024 race is Biden’s to lose and unless there’s some sort of health issue that takes him out or there’s a huge scandal that actually has some substance to it, I think he walks away with it.
