That is the worst misrepresentation of Net Neutrality I’ve ever seen. This “article” makes it sound like the government is protecting you. It makes me want to vomit. They get away with this because nobody reads the actual bills. They just take what the media writes and accepts it as truth.

Thanks for your comment. I searched a name. I’m not going to post the name but it’s not a famous name. It’s a family member. The pics were of severely underage kids. I would love to tell authorities, but idk how you do that without looking guilty of something. I’m just totally shocked that it’s so easy to find those things, even when you’re not looking for them.

Unsustainable OP ,
@Unsustainable@lemmy.today avatar

As I replied to the other comment, I simply searched a family member’s name. I didn’t really understand the results because they’re not like regular search engines. I clicked on the first one and I just saw a LOT of very underage pics. I freaked out and immediately closed the browser. I was shocked that it was so easy to accidentally come across those things.

Creating a torrent that includes all of humanity's knowledge/art/entertainment?

I know we can’t do this with any copyrighted materials. But a lot of books, music, art, knowledge is in the creative commons. Is it possible to create one massive torrent that includes all that can be legally included and then have people only download what they actually want to enjoy?

Unsustainable ,
@Unsustainable@lemmy.today avatar

But don’t lose the list. Losing the list would be bad. We’ll need to keep the list in a safe place.

I wish I would have read your comment before wasting time reading that article to find out how much it was going to cost.

Unsustainable ,
@Unsustainable@lemmy.today avatar

It’s for lazy people. I get the ones that aren’t wrapped. They’re cheaper too.

Evernote is still around? I stopped using that years ago because it pales in comparison to so many other apps.

Johnathan Haidt has laid out all of his teams data and research on the subject. It is very compelling and conclusive.

I think op means why should they, as an individual with no ability whatsoever to have any affect on the situation, care about it.

I think that question should be asked about everything. There are people who have anxiety, depression, addiction, and other life altering results of stressing over things that they ultimately have no control over.

The conflict has been going on for longer than anyone alive today has been around. Many people who did have the power to affect it haven’t been able to, so why should any individual with no power at all need to care about it?

I have strong feelings about it and I think it’s probably the last, or next to last straw that causes WWIII, but I don’t really think about it much. I don’t read the stories. I don’t argue about it. I don’t wring my hands, because I accept that there is nothing I can do about it.

Unsustainable ,
@Unsustainable@lemmy.today avatar

That’s very common.

No. I’m saying I’ve seen hundreds of those, so it’s not interesting in the slightest.

Yes! It just started working when I updated it a few days ago.

Does this only apply to companies with physical operations in the UK? If it applies to all internet entities, then how do they enforce it on a company from another country? If it’s only UK based businesses, then what’s the point? Kids can go to a site hosted in another country.

Odysee is a FOSS video hosting site built like YouTube.

Unsustainable ,
@Unsustainable@lemmy.today avatar

I’ve never seen any of that. I would assume you’d have to go looking to find it. I just subscribe to comedy and tech channels. They’re pretty much the same channels I subscribe to on YouTube. I just try to use alternatives to YouTube whenever I can.

Unsustainable ,

Are you saying that people have preconceived stereotypical notions of groups of people they aren’t part of? I won’t hear any of this nonsense!

Unsustainable ,
@Unsustainable@lemmy.today avatar

Do people still use Google search? Maybe I don’t get out much, but idk anyone that uses Google search.

Unsustainable ,
@Unsustainable@lemmy.today avatar

I mainly use Searx, MetaGer, and DDG. Most of the people I know are not fans of Google. I’m a little more privacy conscious than most of my friends, though. Most of them have FB and IG accounts. I don’t post anything on social media unless it’s as anonymous as it can be.

Unsustainable ,
@Unsustainable@lemmy.today avatar

That site won’t open. How are they measuring the usage, since the privacy conscious search engines don’t track people?

I got scammed by Columbia House when I was a teenager.

Are straws an unnecessary (but convenient) invention?

People often talk about swapping out plastic straws for other materials to help the ocean/fish and the environment, but they also complain about paper straws falling apart easily. Other alternatives that are slightly more sturdy like straws made of straw don’t seem very common....

Unsustainable ,
@Unsustainable@lemmy.today avatar

Straws are necessary to some people with mobility issues. It’s important to rember that not everyone can do what you can do.

There are a couple specific Reddit subs that I use that haven’t migrated. They are an app specific and a device specific sub. They are the only reason I still have a Reddit account. There aren’t as many posts on Lemmy, but they are increasing. There are also other places like Scored, Raddle, Tildes, Rabbit Hole, Saidit, Kbin, Aether, and Minds. Some of them have seen some growth since Reddit took the plunge off the cliff.

Tasker

Unsustainable ,
@Unsustainable@lemmy.today avatar

I use it for lots of things. I’m not a coder, so I can’t make my own apps from scratch. With Tasker I can make my own apps. I’ve made tons of them.

I still have a Reddit account because there are some core subs that haven’t migrated, but I don’t have to official app installed. I use Tasker to check Reddit and notify me of posts.

My memory is horrible and my schedule is varied every day, so I can’t set alarms for certain times. I made an app where I can say something to my watch and it will remind me depending on my location. For example, I can remind myself to get paper towels on my way home from work. When I leave work, it will send a reminder to my watch.

I use it for call screening. I only let calls from my contacts ring. It sends all other calls to voicemail.

I use it to run scripts in Termux.

I have a routine that will tell me why an app was closed.

I have it POST things to the timeline on my watch with JSON.

I have it reassign functions to my phone’s buttons. I made an app that turns on the flashlight when I shake the phone.

I have it put the battery level of my Bluetooth devices in my notification bar and on my watchface.

I have it gather weather and notify me conditions and severe weather alerts.

I could go on and on, but you get the idea. You can do just about anything with it.

Meta discontinues Messenger Lite for Android, it will be unavailable after Sep 18. Users need to install regular Messenger app instead (beehaw.org)

I have not found any news article on this on a whim. Because my friends and family, I need to use Facebook Messenger, and Messenger Lite was a OK client - lightweight, no unnecessary features, etc., compared to the regular Messenger app....

Unsustainable ,
@Unsustainable@lemmy.today avatar

You can use Beeper to replace all your communication apps. That way you only have to install one app, and you don’t have to have Meta installed.

Unsustainable ,
@Unsustainable@lemmy.today avatar

How did you do that? I’d love to set something like that up. I keep seeing Matrix mentioned everywhere, but I haven’t looked into it to see exactly what it is.

Unsustainable ,

I signed up when it was first announced over a year ago. As of a couple months ago I still hadn’t gotten approved. I signed up again and within a couple days I got approved. You should try signing up again.

DDG email is AMAZING! I only wish it would have been around before my email got exposed.

Unsustainable ,
@Unsustainable@lemmy.today avatar

Because this is the first time I’ve heard of Addy. I saw your comment and downloaded the app from F-Droid. I’ll see how it compares to DDG. Do you know of any advantages over DDG?

Unsustainable ,
@Unsustainable@lemmy.today avatar

I’m in the process of doing that. It’s not a quick and easy process. I was so lazy with password, that I would just use a variation of 3 different passwords for everything because that’s all I could remember. Then I had a password exposed, so I decided to change all my passwords to unique passwords and use a password manager. I was shocked to see that I had 126 passwords saved in my browser. That took a long time to go through and change the email and passwords to everything.

It’s only going to get worse with AI writing the stories.

Unsustainable ,
@Unsustainable@lemmy.today avatar

I don’t know. I’ve seen some pretty loose lay persons.

Unsustainable ,
@Unsustainable@lemmy.today avatar

There is a news site that does use AI to write articles without sensationalism. I can’t rember the name of it off the top of my head. I looked at it once and was surprised at how uninterested I was in any of the stories. I doubt it gets much traffic over the initial curiosity look. I’m sure everyone will just use it to make the news even more sensationalized.

Unsustainable ,
@Unsustainable@lemmy.today avatar

I’m not sure how regulation can be effective for AI. No politician understands AI. Also, by the time anything gets passed, AI will have advanced so far that any regulations that are passed will be pointless. Eventually everyone will have AI locally in their pocket. Then there’s really no way to regulate it. It’s a genie that you can’t put back in the bottle.

Unsustainable ,
@Unsustainable@lemmy.today avatar

Do the votes actually matter? They mattered on Reddit because of karma, although I never did understand the point of karma. What is the point on Lemmy? I rarely even notice the up/down votes on a comment/post.
