LA Councilman’s Aide Resigns After Holocaust Jokes About Amy Schumer

Josh Androsky, a former comedian, thought it would be fun to share puns about concentration camps.

An adviser for a Los Angeles City Council member is out of a job after making Holocaust jokes about Amy Schumer on social media.

“The social media posts made by my staffer earlier today were disturbing and reprehensible,” Councilman Hugo Soto-Martínez wrote in a statement after Josh Androsky’s vile tweets began to circulate.

“With antisemitism on the rise in recent years and especially in recent weeks, cracking jokes about the Holocaust isn’t just disgusting, it’s dangerous.

“These antisemitic and misogynistic posts sickened me, and I have accepted his resignation effective immediately.”

Since Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack, Schumer has made strong statements in support of Israel and called out others for not condemning the murders of Jewish civilians—drawing backlash.

On Friday, according to screenshots, the X account of the podcast TrueAnon tweeted: “Amy Schumer is particularly sensitive to Jewish deaths due to her experience in the Holocaust. The nazis named a concentration camp after her it was called Da Cow.”

Androsky engaged, replying: “this is cute or whatever but it’s fucked up that you would say this about her when it you know it was actually Cowschitz.”

TrueAnon then tweeted: “I used to call that spot on the 5 Da Cow!!!” leading Androsky to respond, “I called it Cowschitz!!! either way they all (and amy) smelled the same.”

The Los Angeles Times reports that the latter exchange appears to refer to a large cattle farm near the 5 Freeway. Androsky—who has not publicly commented—later deleted his tweets and then removed his whole account.

Androsky is a former comedian and writer and is Jewish. Soto-Martínez is a former labor organizer who was elected last year to the LA City Council, which was rocked this year by a leaked-tape scandal that revealed several members making racist comments.

Holocaust jokes are really not funny, just like Amy Schumer.

njm1314 ,

Imagine getting fired over a joke and the joke sucked. Like it was an objectively bad joke. That’s not even funny.

Potatos_are_not_friends ,

I remember growing up and being told how dangerous it is to put your name on the Internet.

They didn’t get fired over a shitty joke. They got fired over a shitty joke that was traced right back to them.

Yeah fuck schumer with a mallet but this isnt remotely onion like

It’s a mean joke, but it’s fair game. She’s a public figure, a comedian, and she’s using that to express a political view.

The joke may be dark, but it isn’t that dark. It may be mean, but it’s way less than the sheer hate-filled venom she usually gets.

Trying to act like the holocaust is out of bounds for jokes that aren’t just veiled hate is bullshit. The dude is fucking Jewish, they get to make holocaust jokes if they want. In truth anyone can, but you gotta tread lightly.

Does it make the guy a prick? Yeah. He’s not working as a comedian, so he’s definitely an idiot for trying to do jokes on a public forum. But the joke itself isn’t the problem.

Regardless of bringing up the holocaust (which is not something that should generally be said) going straight into you’re a cow these words rhyme with cow is just a lazy bodyshaming misogny 1 2 punch, and in that sense the joke is definitely the problem even if you excuse the bringing up concentration camps because they’re both Jewish, an aide to the most progressive LA councilman shouldn’t be calling anyone a cow on the timeline

Never said it was funny, just not something that’s out of bounds.

But, as you said, the guy is an idiot for joking around on an identifiable account when working for a government official. Pure stupidity.

I think it important to note that I actually like Schumer’s older comedy. I dunno if I’d go so far as to call myself a fan, but I’m not okay with the abuse she takes.

But I’m also fully behind the principle that there needs to be a very wide degree of latitude for satire/comedy. The more limits you place on that, the closer you get to very dangerous territory.

What do you mean by “fair game”? The guy is an aide to a council member. Are you saying he shouldn’t have resigned?

I’m saying that the only reason he should have resigned was for being an idiot and forgetting he wasn’t on stage. You take a job for a government official, you do not go on social media and crack jokes on an account that can be linked to you. Pure stupidity to do so.

The “fair game” was explained in my comment, imo. However, it means that the target and subject matter of his bad joke were not, and should not be considered protected under normal circumstances. Public figures are subject to different standards regarding comedy, it’s just the way it is. And there’s no subject that’s totally out of bounds for humor, it’s all about how it’s used.

That’s fair game.
