Ideally if there is a launcher it should be optional, preferably something that can be bypassed by passing a flag.

Congress believes it’s a national security threat which is probably true but they haven’t bothered explaining this to their constituents at all. Ideally they’d pass comprehensive privacy protection laws to setup standards that both domestic and foreign companies would be subject to. Then companies either adjust their behaviors and meet a certain level of transparency or they would be prosecuted under the law.

But no… We get this instead: a confusing and obviously targeted ultimatum with Congress telling everyone ‘trust me bro this is the only way’.

Is this tied to a registry key though? I do all my Windows cleanup and customization from Powershell/Ansible so having a GUI settings option isn’t super useful.

Toribor ,
@Toribor@corndog.social avatar

This seems to be the case, but congress is doing an awful job of communicating the danger to the public. There will likely be a lot of people angry at Biden when he signs this if there is no effort to justify the targeted action.

I write a lot of scripts that engineers need to run. I used to really try to make things ‘fail soft’ so that even if one piece failed the rest of the script would keep running and let you know which components failed and what action you needed to take to fix the problem.

Eventually I had so many issues with people assuming that any errors that didn’t result in a failure were safe to ignore and crucial manual steps were being missed. I had to start making them ‘fail hard’ and stop completely when a step failed because it was the only way to get people to reliably perform the desired manual step.

Trying to predict and account for other people’s behavior is really tricky, particularly when a high level of precision is required.

What would you like to see in a house IT setup?

Currently remodeling a domicile, with the sweet and expensive ability to add anything I want within reason. I plan on modernizing the place to bring it into the 21st century because this house deserves it (just a great structure with lots of history and nearing it’s centennial birthday)....

Even with solar a UPS is a good idea if you’re running a home server. You can still get voltage spikes or brief outages. You don’t want to lose power when you have a service writing to a database.

That being said a single large UPS is expensive to maintain. For home use I don’t go over 1000W on a single UPS. Any larger than that creeps into ‘enterprise pricing’ for battery replacements.

For 99% of people an online password manager like Bitwarden or LastPass is going to significantly help them manage passwords securely despite the risks associated with cloud services. Most people can’t handle self hosting Bitwarden or syncing a Keepass database by themselves. Without an easy to access and easy to use online option people will revert to significantly riskier methods like password reuse or using some sort of repeatable/guessable pattern.

For the 1% of people who want more security there are options like Vaultwarden or Keepass. Even then it’s not uncommon to make mistakes and lose data/access or leave some sort of vulnerability exposed. The attack surface is a lot smaller than a public service though which is beneficial.

I want to criticize this but I have multiple production environments with no DHCP and the process for provisioning new servers is basically “Guess an ipv4 address and if you pick one that’s already in use the build will fail and you can guess again.”

This is arguably better which is a little embarrassing.

Toribor ,
@Toribor@corndog.social avatar

You could, but that information gets stale pretty quickly and is tricky to do with the ACLs.

Ah Rimworld. What are other games except brief distractions from more Rimworld?

Toribor ,
@Toribor@corndog.social avatar

Project Zomboid.

It’s bleak and definitely isn’t for everyone but I really get sucked into it. The permadeath aspect usually turns me off a game but in this case it completely breaks me of my habit of save scumming. Every zombie encounter is tense, a single mistake can leave you infected. Sometimes there are long quiet periods where I just survive holed up somewhere safe, reading books, exercising or sorting/building. Other times it’s extremely intense trying to drive through town with a horde on my tail trying to lure them away and double back so I can loot an area.

I find myself looking up the world map at work and planning a route towards a new area or trying to find a suitable spot for a base that meets my survival needs.

Yeesh. I’ve had teachers that will give points back if all (or nearly all) students get a question wrong on a test because they know it’s more likely their own failure than the students. Maybe the question is confusing or poorly worded, maybe the material wasn’t covered or it’s too difficult with the amount of time available.

Never underestimate how much the ruling class is just frothing at the mouth for war. We could destroy the planet and everything living on it several times over. The only evidence of humanities existence may one day be a few rovers on Mars and a ring of fine dust and plastic orbiting the sun.

Don’t the Ubiquity doorbells require a ‘dream machine’ storage appliance for recording video? I didn’t think there was a way to use your own storage anymore which has been my main hesitation in getting one.

Toribor ,
@Toribor@corndog.social avatar

That’s been my problem. It’s overpriced for just a single camera considering I already manage a big storage pool that my other services can use. But do I want to lock myself into buying other Ubiquity IP cams down the road?

The beginning of the game is brutal. Like normal D&D 5E, if you’re before level three or four a single mistake or a stiff breeze can kill a player.

I’ve played Act 1 a couple times and I bounce around the whole map doing stuff in a specific order so I don’t get wrecked.

Toribor ,
@Toribor@corndog.social avatar

Yeah D&D leveling is not linear at all.

  • 1-3: Extremely fragile, casters can be one shot by most non-minions
  • 4-7: Balanced, can handle most things with some prep
  • 8-12: Basically unstoppable unless caught by surprise
  • 13-20: Godlike

A single level can make a huge difference. Particularly when you hit thresholds for extra attacks or higher tier spells.

I played the demo for this game so many times and was very hyped and then when it released reviews were so awful I ended up not buying it. I kept meaning to pick it up cheap but never got around to it.

I’ve taught myself CAD and am getting pretty competent at it. I’ve been 3d printing since 2014 so I’m proficient there too. I’ve designed lots of functional parts to solve problems for myself, and I’m getting more into doing pieces for costume design.

What type of 3d printed stuff is actually profitable to sell? Every time I consider trying to monetize it a bit I go shopping around and think that there is no way I can design something that is a better quality or at a lower price than what is already available. Then I think about the hassle of having to manage printing and shipping and dealing with customers on top of my normal job and I think that it isn’t worth it.

I’m a sysadmin and these days a good third of my job is apologizing to end users for the stupid shit Microsoft does that I have no control over. Managing Microsoft products is like having a bunch of ticking time bombs that you have to juggle while everyone yells at you.

Toribor ,
@Toribor@corndog.social avatar

The last few years have been really bizarre. In 2019 it really felt like my org was moving away from Microsoft. I’d just retired Skype and we were moving over to this new Microsoft Teams thing but the executive team was asking me about moving to Google Apps and dropping Outlook/Exchange/Sharepoint entirely, maybe we expand our Slack usage too? Then Covid happened and Teams turned into essential infrastructure overnight.

Fast forward a few years and the entire Microsoft experience is now basically built around a Teams-first strategy. It’s the main thing that my users care about and use on a daily basis. They want more things integrating with it and use it as a pathway into other Office products. Microsoft is making a real mess of things, but it’s kind of crazy how fast they pivoted to meet the new needs of their users and keep them locked in.

Monarch Money

Mint is going away and I need a polished mostly automatic way of tracking my income, spending and investments. Sure there are cheaper or subscription free ways of doing it but I really need something that just connects to all my accounts and helps me visualize things. I’m willing to pay for the service and I get to leave Intuit behind.

Midjourney

I use it to make concept art for characters, places and things in my tabletop game. I’m looking to drop midjourney and do this all locally though but haven’t gotten around to setting that up yet. In the meantime it’s still pretty cheap and easy to use.

I’m not a dev but if I remember right 1.3 or 1.4 came with some improvements intended to help mods ‘soft fail’ instead of hard failing if they hadn’t yet been updated for a new release.

That being said mod devs are great and have basically a month before 1.5 is promoted to stable. Not that it will stop people from whining in the workshop threads.

Well you definitely don’t want to have an IPO after it’s clear that you’ve already peaked and there is no way to gain more users or squeeze value out of the existing ones.
