The protestors should include this civil engagement on their resumes. Find employers that agree with their stance against genocide.

That's going to be hard when the government makes it illegal for companies that take federal money to boycott, divest, sanction, and now even criticize Israel. Just hiring someone with that on their resume could be a problem.

I think the reason they're useful for writing code is that there's a third party - the parser or compiler - that checks their work. I've used LLMs to write code as well, and it didn't always get me something that worked but I was easily able to catch the error.

Intermediate? Nah, junior. They're cheaper after all.

But senior devs do a lot more than output code. Sometimes - like Bill Atkinson's famous -2000 line change to Quickdraw - their jobs involve a lot of complex logic and very little actual code output.

That just makes sense. Companies want to make their customers happy, and users aren't Google's customers

I don't think nuclear power was killed by NIMBYs, at least not entirely. In the 1970s and 80s the financial world started taking a much more short-term view. Nuclear power plants have such a huge up-front cost that you aren't going to see returns for decades. When the market wants numbers to go up every quarter they're not going to finance something that won't make a profit for 20 years.

Semi-Hemi-Demigod ,
@Semi-Hemi-Demigod@kbin.social avatar

I wouldn't build a new power plant, but reactivating existing ones makes sense and is cheaper per GW than solar and reactivation has insignificant emissions.

Nobody is going to re-certify a plant built on 1960s technology

Yeah, that's why they're re-starting one built on 1970s technology

The Electric Monk was a labour-saving device, like a dishwasher or a video recorder. Dishwashers washed tedious dishes for you, thus saving you the bother of washing them yourself, video recorders watched tedious television for you, thus saving you the bother of looking at it yourself; Electric Monks believed things for you, thus saving you what was becoming an increasingly onerous task, that of believing all the things the world expected you to believe.

Unfortunately this Electric Monk had developed a fault, and had started to believe all kinds of things, more or less at random. It was even beginning to believe things they’d have difficulty believing in Salt Lake City. It had never heard of Salt Lake City, of course. Nor had it ever heard of a quingigillion, which was roughly the number of miles between this valley and the Great Salt Lake of Utah.

Semi-Hemi-Demigod ,

Yeah, but that's not the decadence they're talking about. They mean things like "feeling like yourself" and "having good sex."

I agree that the tech isn't there, but unless we figure out some new physics it's going to be impossible to put enough battery, computing power, and cooling capacity in something the size of sunglasses. So the tech for VR like we really want is at least 20 years away, if not more.

I've worked for a couple startups and you're absolutely right. If you make a profit you pay taxes on that money, so startups like to spend most of the money they bring in. They also want to show revenue growth, since that's what investors like to see. You grow revenue by getting more paying customers. And you do that by doing what your customers want.

When you go public, your goal is to increase shareholder value. So you do this by reducing costs and finding ways to wring customers out of revenue. You find ways to nickle and dime customers out of revenue so much you develop an entire branch of law devoted to you suing your customers

Blue collar dudes are surprisingly okay with leftist ideas if you don't use the "bad words." But if the group's too big there will be someone from their Politburo who realizes what you're talking about and starts hurling feces.

I lived in prime Trump Country during 2016, and a couple people told me that they admired Bernie because he was honest and also hated billionaires.

Plus I had a few guys on the verge of staging a takeover of the local concrete plant until Der Kommissar pointed out that I was describing a socialist cooperative.

There's a lot of fun cryptids in that region. Apart from the Pennsylvania White Bigfoot, there's the snallygaster and the dewayo. I think the former is because there's a lot of herons in the area, and the latter is your standard "omg a weird bear" cryptid.

There's activism happening around 4/20. My dispensary is getting folks to post their experiences with medical use, and getting them to sign a petition and giving out stickers promoting my state's recreational bill. Plus sometimes it's fun to have fun. Having a single day (and time) to make it a cultural event helps with activism by removing the stigma against it.

I don't celebrate 4/20 because I use it medicinally, but I'm glad it's a thing if only because it makes everybody forget Hitler's birthday.

Semi-Hemi-Demigod ,

All their wagons are AWD, which I guess is okay. They're all also Cross Country models, so not as sporty as the V70R.

But you can get a proper V70R for under $15,000 which is awesome.

Part of the (small) student loans I've since paid off went to pay for my Econ 101 class, so I understand that having a big portion of the economy tied up paying student loans is a bad thing for everyone.

Now the big problem is we've made college the default next step and we're running out of tradesmen while having a glut of college grads serving coffee and doing gig work.

I’m not actually sure what they do with the calves but it’s not growing them as normal meat cows.

They raise them for a little bit and then slaughter them and sell it as veal.
