I’ll never understand why some people look at the fact that steam is popular because of their policies, and can’t help but make a comment like this equating that popularity to cock worship.

Like, we get it bro. You’re thinking about cocks and you’re mad about a half decent game store. What compelled you to combine those thoughts on a public forum?

The weird thing is that this isn’t even the first comment I’ve seen like this. Dudes that are mad about steam want everyone else to know about steam’s massive, throbbing cock for some reason. This guy alone has posted 3 of these.

Seasoned_Greetings ,

Here’s the difference. When we talk about companies dominating an industry, we’re usually talking about practices that keep competition from even forming. Monopolies are formed as a result of big companies buying out or making it impossible for their competition.

Steam doesn’t do that, which is a big reason they won their monopoly suit. They just provide a better model than anyone else is willing to, and they rake in the cash because of it.

Compare this situation to books-a-million in the states. Books-a-million doesn’t have a monopoly on books, they just have created a better environment for selling them. They aren’t stopping other book stores from opening or buying chains to shut them down, they just sell you a cup of coffee and give you a place to sit while you browse their massive selection.

That’s not a monopoly, that’s just better business.

Hot take: I’m playing unicorn overlord and started it after I read this article a couple days ago. It’s honestly not that bad.

The story itself feels a little shallow, being about 10 hours in. Aside from a certain character being “abducted”, I really haven’t perceived any risk so far. It seems like every decision I make is a no-brainer with consequences only appearing if I make the obtusely obvious wrong decision.

Story and writing wise, it isn’t really the shining example of jrpgs to begin with, so the localisation just seems like a footnote so far.

The gameplay loop is pretty satisfying though, which is why I’m still in it. I’m ready for the writing to mature into a darker game and hoping that this first “chapter” is just a light beginning. But I wouldn’t be surprised if it didn’t happen.

To be honest, if I were going to be offended at anything in this game, it’d be the jiggly boobs on half the girl units for no reason and the overtly sexual way that the witch class character just… Stands there swinging her hips? But I’m not one to even care that much about eye candy. But it’d make a better complaint to me than overly-shakepearean localisation.

Seasoned_Greetings ,

For another hot take, I’d recommend anyone looking at unicorn overlord to give Symphony of War: Nephilim Saga a try.

The battle system is built extremely similarly, I dare say even better, and the overworld is fire emblem like instead of rts like unicorn overlord.

While I agree with you that the teacher in this post is wrong about what this is, I don’t think labeling “gender bigotry” indiscriminately as something both sexes do under one umbrella is accomplishing anything but minimizing the struggle women have endured for basically all of human existence up until the last few decades.

Personally, I wouldn’t fault this woman for thinking what she does if she’s willing to accept a broader explanation later, given that women have literally been sold as property up until a couple hundred years ago.

Women have the right to at least posit the ways they as a group have been held down, and that includes accepting their indignation and allowing them grace for when they’re wrong, because without those things they won’t actually learn the truth.

Further than that, I think it’s necessary for women learning now to have the same realization this one did that women throughout all of history save for this recent tiny sliver have been oppressed. Even if it’s built on an incidentally faulty premise, that doesn’t mean the realization itself is wrong.

Covering up the discourse by labeling the process of realization as “gender bigotry” is itself an attempt at erasure, and very much puts you on the side of the oppressors, just because you think it’s distasteful to have this realization yourself.

I’m sure gender bigotry exists in the direction of women towards men. This ain’t it.

I work in maritime, often alongside Indian counterparts who speak both English to me and Indian to their ship mates.

Yes, they do speak Indian just as fast. Yes, the way they speak English has a lot to do with the cadence of how they speak their native language.

As far as the flow goes, I’ve noticed that Indian does flow better than English just listening to it, but I don’t know enough of it to make that observation with any credibility.

Seasoned_Greetings ,

I figured that was the case, but I don’t know any of it, so I didn’t know better. Thanks for clarifying.

From my understanding, it’s just one guy who bought the whole thing and believes that anything cartoon/comic related isn’t relevant anymore. He’s trying to move wb into the “reality tv” era.

All of which is really stupid because wb is literally only known for its century-long run of pretty good cartoons and comics, and its reality aspect was so bad that they had to brand it off of wb, which is what the cw is.

So yeah, this one guy is running wb into the ground and destroying one of the biggest animated repositories on the planet because he “doesn’t like cartoons”.

Weirdly specific. I had an argument about this exact thing on a post a few weeks ago. There was someone who had a friend who lost was divorced by his wife (phrasing issue) and couldn’t understand why other parents were wary of him hosting a sleepover for his daughter. He had done so many times as a married man but suddenly couldn’t.

So the argument was about how women in general, especially parents of little girls, can’t blindly trust every man they meet. There were some salty males insisting that line of logic is sexist.

Anyway, banning all sleepovers isn’t the solution. Properly chaperoned sleepovers with two parents present should be fine.

[Edit: Yes, I realize that it’s technically sexist. The fact that it is is beside the point that it’s necessary for women to be wary of men. If you don’t understand why, ask literally any woman in your life to explain it for you]

[Edit #2: I’m not engaging anyone else on the subject from this point. I have successfully fallen into the same trap of holding dudes’ hands who don’t understand that strange men do, in fact, pose a risk to women, and now my morning has been wasted.

I already elaborated this point more than enough. If you still feel the need to express how this offends you after you read down this thread, I would urge you to look elsewhere into women’s perspectives on the subject before you just handwave it like these guys are trying to do.]

99% of sexual assault cases are perpetrated by men, and 91% of the victims are women

I really don’t wish to rehash this. For the sake of simplicity, yes. It fits the technical definition of sexism. However, arguing that women shouldn’t be wary of men they don’t know because it might hurt someone’s feelings is completely ridiculous, especially when the thing at stake is a woman or girl’s safety.

I understand, believe me because I had to reassure several people multiple times, that women can also be monsters. That doesn’t change the fact that perpetrators of sexual assault cases are overwhelmingly men.

This cannot be overstated. Even sexual assault against men is perpetrated 86% of the time by other men. See Page 32

I hesitate to even engage you on this because there’s a fine line between logically arriving at the point that it is in fact sexist, and blindly extending the claim to the connotation that discrimination in that sense shouldn’t exist at all. If you are going to argue the latter, I’m not going any further than this.

Seasoned_Greetings ,

If you live your life like that

The reality is that women do.

using statistics like that you end up supporting people who say you should be wary of blacks because 14% of the population is black yet commit 53% of the murders

No, this is a different thing. People who espouse that line of logic are explicitly using it to justify racism. There are several other factors that play into that specific statistic, including the population density of black people in areas where crime is already high, and the likelihood of being economically disadvantaged just by being in a black family from generational poverty.

That stat specifically is simplified to a bare number and used as a bludgeon by racists.

Googling says around 12,000 pedos out of 330 million people

I understand how you misinterpreted the point, given the actual subject of the post, but those statistics are about sexual assault in general. 1 in 3 women experience unwanted sexual contact in their lifetime. I’d say that’s high enough number to warrant being aware of a situation where you, as a woman, might be vulnerable to that.

To relate to the point you’re trying to make about comparing this to justifying racism with black crime stats, would you choose to walk through a neighborhood where the crime rate was high? Regardless of the demographic makeup of the neighborhood, is it morally wrong to arrive at the conclusion that you are not safe in certain areas because the statistical likelihood of being assaulted is higher?

Does the sentence “If I don’t walk through this neighborhood then I must be prejudiced against the people here who don’t commit crimes” make sense to you?

If the answer to all of those is no, then you can at least recognize the line of logic women have to be conscious of when they are faced with potentially being in a precarious situation around a man who they don’t know.

Seasoned_Greetings , (edited )

Just as you use your statistic to justify sexism.

I have said several times already that it’s sexism. That doesn’t make it wrong to be cautious, nor is it justifying the fact.

Sexism in its barest definition exists in benign circumstances all around us. Why do men and women have different bathrooms? Different sports leagues? Different car insurance rates?

Arguing that sexism shouldn’t exist for the sake of it in this specific case is selectively pushing equality in the face of women’s safety.

100% of women will experience a car crash in their lifetime. (3-4 accidents per lifetime).

Let’s extend your logic on this: is it wrong to wear a seat belt given, statistically, that you will experience a car crash at some point? Because in effect, that’s what this line of logic is.

Or are you just being obtuse? Because in order for this point to make sense, you’d have to argue against practicing safety in the face of statistical likelihood. Which is literally what this is about

Because to you, the cause isn’t your problem

Oh, please do educate me on what causes men to sexually assault women. Yes, the fact that women are being attacked is the problem. The cause should not preclude women from taking measures to ensure their safety.

As long as I have spent clarifying this point, besides the misguided notion that we should push equality in a situation that is fundamentally unequal, I seriously don’t understand how people don’t get it.

Seasoned_Greetings , (edited )

Fellas, is it wrong to fear for the safety of your children?

It’s quite ironic of you to take that stance, on this post.

Yeah, it’s sexist. That doesn’t make taking precaution wrong. If you want clarification on that subject, go read the essay I wrote for the other guy. Or maybe ask a lady friend. Most women tend to understand this concept pretty well, given they have to live with it.

Seasoned_Greetings ,

To be clear, the man in question was divorced. Unknown reasons. Not widowed.

Also, I’m not over here saying that no man should ever be trusted in that situation. Just that I won’t blame parents who do look at that situation and don’t want their girls at that sleepover.

In any case, I’m pretty tired of arguing against the “secretly sexist” accusations. Call it what you want. The concept is out there, and you clearly understand it.

Seasoned_Greetings , (edited )

The patriarchy and culture of toxic masculinity. Added to that many religions teach that men are more important than women.

And because of this, it’s not important for women to protect themselves? We should denounce the fact that women protect themselves because society has conditioned men to be violent?

Look, I’m all about addressing the root cause, but just pointing at one injustice in society doesn’t make another just disappear.

Again if you live your life by those statistics, you would also be wary of black people

You really need to stop saying “well if you’re taking precautions based on statistics you must also be racist”

Because that’s a really transparent fallacy that essentially just boils down to you asserting “women shouldn’t protect themselves because what about black people?”

These are separate points, and putting the words in my mouth that I must be racist is nothing more than deflection to avoid addressing the actual point.

Again if you live your life by those statistics

Additionally, I know very many people who wear seat belts because of the statistical chance of being in a wreck. According to your fallacy, all of those people must also be racist.

Seasoned_Greetings ,

1 in 3 women experience unwanted sexual contact at least once in their lifetime. That’s roughly 65 million women in the states.

That’s not an insignificant risk. You may choose to ignore it, but you clearly don’t have to live with it.

Saying “women should ignore potential danger” on the premise that it’s not fair to a man, who is 9 times out of 10 not even effected by the precautions that women tend to take, is basically like saying you shouldn’t wear a seat belt so that you don’t accidentally offend the other drivers on the road.

You aren’t discriminating against those other drivers by being conscious of your own safety.

Whether or not you agree with that doesn’t really change the fact that women are taught to go to the bathroom in groups or go to the bar with friends (or really not go anywhere alone that they might not be able to easily call for help) or carry mace or cross the street to avoid a man that’s looking at them creepily or any number of avoidant situations.

These are things women do to protect themselves that literally only affect the men who wanted to and would otherwise miss an opportunity to assault them, and things women are taught to do by other women because sexual assault is a thing that happens.

The only context things like this are even brought up as “sexist” at all is when men realize that women have to do it and then get offended on the behalf of all men because it’s “not fair”. Like in this conversation we’re having now.

Guarantee that the line of reasoning here is

We can stop the inevitable fact that people aren’t going to buy our shares by pushing them on the most chronically addicted users of our platform and disguising it as a premium exclusive offer

I mean, who else is susceptible enough to the sunken cost fallacy that they would pour actual money into reddit? The answer is the demographic that’s already put in a substantial amount of investment in the form of time spent on content creation.

To those people, they might very well bite because it means their useless, time consuming hobby finally might become a source of income.

It’s honestly an intelligent business move by reddit, even if it’s scummy as fuck and ultimately setting up their own best content creators to spectacularly fail and lose a ton of money when the shares tank.

Reddit still goes public. Reddit still pays their CEOs obscenely before they jump ship. Only the creators lose.

Chipotle tobasco is some of the best hot sauce I’ve ever had. I honestly have no idea if they even sell outside of Louisiana, but if you ever get the chance, try it.

The denizens of Louisiana have such an elevated taste for spice that any time I even mention it to anyone here they say “oh that shit sounds basic, try this one” and I can’t get anyone to actually try it.

It has a kick, but not as hot as a full fledged hot sauce. Nowhere near making you sweat hot. But the flavor profile is 👌

Getting used to? Without a decent option for health insurance, a sizeable chunk of us have been living for our entire adult lives with the reality that one wrong move could bankrupt us. Even if we have savings and aren’t actually living paycheck to paycheck.

The rest of us who can afford to be on the affordable care act or have insurance through work are shelling out a quarter of our paychecks so that we can have the privilege of two checkups and hospitals can graciously (legally, if you have insurance) not charge more than $18,000 per year, which is a limit that can be reached in a single visit.

That’s just one of the things that keep young adults down here.

Seasoned_Greetings ,

That’s the point of what this guy is saying.

But the point of making batteries not easily removable (besides the waterproofing factor) is that when a repair shop charges them $150 to do it, lots of people will justify putting that money towards a new phone instead.

As someone who works on phones as a hobby, I’ve seen that the percentage of people who will either hire someone to do it or buy a different phone is near 100. It’s absolutely an intentional planned obsolescence.

Seasoned_Greetings ,

Toward the end of my pixel 5’s life, the battery in it lasted about 10 minutes. The phone itself was 3 years old. It happens.

Seasoned_Greetings ,

I get the feeling it has to do with how wireless charging works. On a wire, a phone can regulate how quickly it takes charge or whether it does at all. I don’t think phones are capable of that with wireless charging, which is exclusively how I charged my pixel 5 at night.

So it would get to 100% and stay there for several hours every single night. I didn’t realize it was bad at the time.

It could always just be that I was unlucky and got a defective battery to begin with. No way to know for sure.

In the same way that Biden is preferable to Trump. Biden is far from perfect, has lukewarm political leanings, only advances soft-left policies to better his own election chances and keeps a cop as a vp.

But Trump is an actual war mongering lunatic wannabe fascist. Sometimes it’s about the lesser evil.

Yes, you could say there are plenty of people more worth supporting than these two old farts, but none of them are on the ballot are they?

It’s that situation with Russia. Putin is an actual, proven warmonger who kills his own countrymen to hold on to power. Someone who doesn’t do either of those things and respects the will of the people is a step up, regardless of their politics, because that person can be voted out.

Seasoned_Greetings , (edited )

Racist remarks

You mean like how putin criminalized being gay? It’s one thing to make remarks, it’s another thing to actually oppress a minority by claiming their existence is propaganda.

Nazi affiliation

So taking nazis from prison with the promise of a pardon if they fight on russias front line is… What?

You’re only saying that because you know what Putin is like in power

This is an incredible fallacy. I’m almost lost for words. First of all, any line of logic that relies on the premise “you’re just saying that because you don’t understand how much worse it could be” is just plain wrong. I could say with the exact same amount of confidence that you don’t understand how much better it could be.

But also, Putin is by far the most dangerous leader the world has seen since Hitler. He’s an actual fascist, who disappears people who pose any kind of threat to him. He’s single handedly swinging his entire country into a war they don’t want because he feels entitled to Ukrainian land.

I’d take my chances on literally anyone else who respected the vote. Putin does not. I’d take my chances on someone who would end the war. Putin will see a million of his own die before he even considers it.

Pushing the whole “Navalny was a nazi so he’s automatically worse” is really downplaying how incredibly evil putin actually is. I mean, he’s basically already a nazi in all but name.

Get out of here with your Russian apologetics.

In reality, putler’s entire strategy for the US has been to create discord and chaos and bank on the fact that we’ll be too paralyzed as a country to properly react to the things Russia does.

Seasoned_Greetings ,

but perhaps somebody would care to tell me what is wrong with my theory?

I’ll give it a shot.

First off, any payoff from Russia investing in NATO defense is massively offset by the untold damage this war is doing to Russia’s economy and population. This still holds true if it’s just putin’s investment, although if he were really bent on profit from that he probably could. But there are other, more lucrative and less damaging avenues to profit for a guy with as much money as he has.

Secondly, the war isn’t pointless. Occams razor suggests the simplest reason is often the truth. The simplest reason is that Crimea provides Russia a western seaport that isn’t frozen half of the year, and taking eastern Ukraine provides a path to that port.

Seasoned_Greetings ,
