Underground railways use houses for ventilation as well.

Omega_Jimes ,

Here’s one on Google maps maps.app.goo.gl/55qqbQRYY7abKPVy9I drove past this for years without thinking about it until one day I drove under it.

Now that I know what it is, it’s pretty obvious, but how often does the average person really inspect houses as they drive by?

Omega_Jimes ,

It was a serious problem for a long time. Late 90’s/early 2000’s E3 and game shows were greasy.

I remember gaming magazines running whole sections just on the “best booth babes” of the season.

Omega_Jimes ,

My issue is, aside from gaming, I’m not interacting with the content or data in any meaningful, improved way.

VR for real life is just a series of flat two dimensional screens, usually with a novelty background of a waterfall.

Omega_Jimes ,

I demoed a system that let you input construction plans and walk around/ interact with ar wires/plumbing/walls once. But it was so cumbersome to implement it was more like a neat tech demo.

Maybe once the tech is small enough to fit inside safety glasses…

Top 10 Generative AI Models Mimic Russian Disinformation Claims A Third of the Time, Citing Moscow-Created Fake Local News Sites as Authoritative Sources (www.newsguardtech.com)

NewsGuard audit finds that 32% of the time, leading AI chatbots spread Russian disinformation narratives created by John Mark Dougan, an American fugitive now operating from Moscow, citing his fake local news sites and fabricated claims on YouTube as reliable sources....

Omega_Jimes ,

This is the frustrating part of it. The public doesn’t understand what’s actually happening, or what the goal of these large language models is, so because they’re very convincing conversationalists, your average Joe considers them as true AI.

Apple is bringing RCS to the iPhone in iOS 18 | The new standard will replace SMS as the default communication protocol between Android and iOS devices (www.theverge.com)

The long-awaited day is here: Apple has announced that its Messages app will support RCS in iOS 18. The move comes after years of taunting, cajoling, and finally, some regulatory scrutiny from the EU....

Omega_Jimes ,

Right now my phone gives me the option if RCS fails for some reason, to send the message again with SMS. I assume that will be the case here as well.

I'm going to reinstall linux on my computer. What is it like to run something Silverblue based these days ?

I have been using CachyOS for more than 6 months at this point and I’m pretty happy with it. Among the many distros I tried, this is probably my favourite arch based distro. I initially installed it because it offered Hyprland desktop, and I didn’t want to bring over my messy config nor did I want to start from scratch. But...

Omega_Jimes ,

I’m using nobara right now, but somewhere over the last year my bluetooth has stopped working.
This has led me down the road of a reinstall, nobara had been great for gaming but now that I’m looking at spending more time developing I’m also looking at an immutable os. There has been some really enlightening discussion here.

Omega_Jimes ,

I have a dual boot partition, but honestly the games that don’t run are so few and far between that I really don’t bother…

It’s like if you bought a Playstation, how do you play Xbox games? Unless it’s really worth it, you just don’t.

Omega_Jimes ,

Bittorrent is nice for getting isos, but it would pul my hair out if I tried to download patches with it.

HP bricks ProBook laptops with bad BIOS delivered via automatic updates — many users face black screen after Windows pushes new firmware (www.tomshardware.com)

Omega_Jimes ,

They’re very inconsistent. I’ve had an x360 since 2020 and, aside from the hinge being weak, it’s still going. I’m also pretty careless with my equipment. My wife uses it now.

But then, I’ve seen more than one like yours that has seemed to evaporate like a cheap t-shirt.

Omega_Jimes ,

Ive been 100% linux since 2016, and while there are some pain points, the games that work, work amazingly well.

I have epic games, gog, steam games all working through launchers that work pretty perfectly. The biggest pain points are developers with intrusive anticheats.

Check the games you/your friends play against protondb.com or areweanticheatyet.com before committing yourself.

I asked my dad if he had any money saved to help with college and he told me that people like us don’t go to college. I dropped out in grade 11. I hope to graduate university in three years from now at the ripe old age of 41.

Omega_Jimes ,

There are too many handhelds coming out too fast that are too expensive with no differentiation.

I don’t know how long these companies are going to stay in the market.

Omega_Jimes ,

If it is not sensitive data, and you’re okay being morally objectionable, you can buy a large hard drive from some place with a good return policy, transfer your data to it, format/repartition your drive, transfer everything back and return the hdd for a 15% stocking fee.

Omega_Jimes ,

It’s a little bit more than “your os knows everything you do”.

Copilot for Windows isn’t the same thing as Copilot for 365, although it’s similar, and the system requirements only apply if you tell it to process locally. My understanding of the docs is Copilot is cloud based by default.

The issue isn’t smooth brained luddites, it’s smooth brained casuals giving condom over their personal information to a corporation that has a fiduciary responsibility to profit and grow.

Omega_Jimes ,

So people not understand the main benefits of the Steamdeck are: It’s cheap It doesn’t use windows.

Like honestly, GPD has been making solid windows handhelds for years, but they’ve never been a popular as now because of these two things.

Omega_Jimes ,

First their drm is based around the assumption that you’re a criminal, and now this. I’m kinda glad I didn’t buy it.

Omega_Jimes ,

“The good news is we have a console for people without internet access, it’s called Xbox 360”

Omega_Jimes ,

I use fedora on my thinkbook with Gnome/PaperWM and my upgrade experience was ezpz.

Omega_Jimes ,

Rabble. It’s themed with my other devices, Pibble, Pabble, and Ribble.

Omega_Jimes ,

Yeah linux sucks unless you want to browse the internet, do office work, or play games.

Anything else is basically impossible.

Omega_Jimes ,

I don’t even know what my display drivers are.

They’re handled and updated by the operating system.

Once a week I check for updates, and click a button to install anything I want updated.

I literally have no clue what you’re talking about.

Omega_Jimes ,

The problem I have is normalization. People complained about micro-monetization in video games, but that was normalized. People complained about corporate interest in open source, but that’s normalized. Now people are complaining about your operating system advertising to you against your will, it will be normal soon.

Omega_Jimes ,

I’m not sure I need to onion my torrents. I feel like routing through a decent VPN is probably good enough. I guess if I had all night to transfer a 5MB PDF document that was going to collapse a government this would be what I’d use?

Omega_Jimes ,

You’re not psyched about the pulyarbnnntelpc shell? Finally, a smartphone maker that’s not afraid to experiment with materials from the hell plane.

Omega_Jimes ,

“It’s a Rust based…” You son of a bitch, I’m in.

Omega_Jimes ,

The 8gb ram MacBook works great for your average Mac user. The person who uses it for writing resumes and surfing YouTube which I’m sure is a huge chunk of the market. Devs/Gamers/power users can’t make do with 8gb, but my sister in law who just does paper work and teams meetings all day is served well by her 2016 laptop, and wouldn’t have any issue with an 8gb MacBook.

My dude, never mess with work equipment. Own up to your mistakes with the IT department, and they can fix it on their end.

    Omega_Jimes ,

The death of small phones is why I’m so committed to my flip 4. The space it takes up in my pocket or bag is so much less than any “regular” phone.

    Omega_Jimes ,

This is true, and honestly my biggest gripe with the phone. I don’t wear small mitts, and I can only comfortably reach 3/4 of the way up the phone. This is exacerbated by the fact that phone application design is in a very top-centric stage right now. I wonder if there’s a way I could extend the android nav bar to take up the top 1/4 of the screen…

    Omega_Jimes ,

Does anyone have any recordings of these things? Because I want to hear how loud a judge can sigh.

    Omega_Jimes ,

I guess this needs a preface, so, I invested $45 in the initial Kickstarter.

That being said. Every time I log in I’m amazed by the scale and scope of the systems in this game. It’s a game in a mind blowing scale, with so much crazy detail and so much to do. It’s also a massive clunky mess that I can’t play for more then an hour. Nothing is really cohesive. Nothing works together, and everything is constantly broken.

There’s a multiverse where this is the meta-universe that people interact with in a natural way, and people can exist in for almost their whole lives. But our universe rolled a one…

    Omega_Jimes ,

I hate how obfuscated it is on Windows. At least if it asked me for sudo, I’d know to Uninstall. On Windows programs can just do anything.

    Omega_Jimes ,

This is more or less what I was getting at. Windows UAC triggers so often with no context that’s its really just an annoying popup to most users. You need to pass the same UAC prompts to installing Excel as to install a root kit or a compromised software package.

    Omega_Jimes ,

Honestly I’m a little upset there isn’t an attachment for the m16 that makes it sound like a clown horn.

    Omega_Jimes ,

There are definitely people who look up specific devs to dox and harrass.

I wouldn’t say it happens more often than your local female meteorologist gets harassed, but it does happen enough that if I became a game dev no one online would ever know.

    Omega_Jimes ,

Nintendo basically sent out a press release saying “Its super easy to pirate our games!”. This is really only positive for them if no other projects show up.

Are there any Windows-exclusive programs you use?

I had to test/fix something at work and I set up a Windows VM because it was a bug specific to Windows users. Once I was done, I thought, “Maybe I should keep this VM for something.” but I couldn’t think of anything that wasn’t a game (which probably wouldn’t work well in a VM anyway) or some super specific enterprise...

    Omega_Jimes ,

It’s a requirement for my Business Comms course to use Word, to the point where the prof will walk around to ensure you have Word open. The online version is awful and often drops sentences when I type so I dont use it. I could never get the darn thing working over WINE or Cassowary, so I have a VM that basically just runs that.

    Omega_Jimes ,

I was tempted to do this with my tux sticker, but when my wife saw me sizing it up she kiboshed it.

"I’m not having a terminator penguin stare at me everyday. "

    Omega_Jimes ,

So when you clean windows, how long does it actually stay clean? I uninstalled a bunch of stuff when I was using windows 10 and they kept reappearing.

    Omega_Jimes ,

I tried a ton, and I settled with Fedora just for the mix of stability and support. Though, with Red Hat being asses I might have to mix it up.

    Omega_Jimes ,

So it’s a $50 bomb model? I mean that’s not bad I guess. Assuming it’s a decent model and not like the garbage Bethesda usually ships nowadays.

    Omega_Jimes ,

Those interests usually mean you have good experience with alcohol.

    Omega_Jimes ,

If you’re going to try and compete with something like Steam, you need to actually compete.

Most launchers are storefronts at best and nothing else. Often the buying experience isn’t even good.

    Omega_Jimes ,

I’m still using my Pebble Time. I’ve tried the Apple watch during my IPhone experiment, a fitbit, and a Garmin. Honestly the pebble is head and shoulders above any of them.
