Could an animal be taught how to throw accurately?

Just thinking about how I’ve read that humans are the only animals on the planet that can throw objects with a degree of accuracy. But could a dog or other animal be taught, and trained to throw things to hit a target? I mean, it’s not like a human can throw well without guidance and practice, either.

Kraiden ,

This was my first thought too. Those fuckers have great aim, and disgusting choice in projectiles

Kraiden ,

Ye, it'll stop the casual abuse for all of 5 minutes. There are already tools to obscure the use of AI and, as you say, it won't take much to update them.

Kraiden ,

Remember they're doing this so that they can detect it themselves. I'm far from an expert, so maybe I'm misunderstanding something but the way I understand it, they'd be defeating their own tool if they go down this route. If they cycle the logit biases, how can they themselves detect if a random piece of text is generated? Which set of biases do they test?

At the end of the day, you're talking about raw text. There's no option to sign it, or embed metadata or anything like that. You can't even guarantee that you're seeing the complete sample, or even a single sample! If there is a fingerprint, it'll be detectable to anyone, and it'll be easily removed.

Kraiden ,

It's a bit more nuanced than that. Essentially AP fact checked it and instead of saying "Hillbilly Eulegy doesn't contain a story about Vance getting freaky with a couch" they used the headline "Vance never had relations with a couch"

That's not something anyone could actually know for sure though, and they were called on it... and had to retract it...

Which of course lead to people wondering why it was retracted, and it kinda snowballed. I don't think anybody seriously believes it, but as the story goes, there's no evidence he DIDN'T fuck a couch lol

Kraiden ,

what he's really saying is you won't be able to vote anymore

Kraiden ,

I used uGet on windows, and it was fairly smooth. Not google, but an equally annoying large download. I believe it's on Linux as well.

Johnson: Replacing Biden on ticket would be 'wrong,' 'unlawful' (abcnews.go.com)

This was always the plan. They will contest any replacement and then only Trump will be on the ballot. AOC tried to warn you fucking people. This is why Biden needed to go over a year ago and the PARTY said “fuck you guys” until it was too hard to fucking ignore.

Kraiden ,

You're assuming they care about keeping their corruption hidden. They want absolute power! Who cares if the people know the system is corrupt if there's nothing they can do about it. Most dems are already aware that this is a fight for democracy itself, and the reps will just say they're "using the corruption to their advantage so they can fix it" or something.

The strategy you've outlined relies too heavily on their winning the election fairly. Don't get me wrong, it's not impossible, but it's far from a sure bet.

Kraiden ,

2 were self employed, running their own businesses, one was fucking fishing, and one "cuts fabric" part time.

Show me a corporate desk slave that a) lives that long, b) works that long and c) doesn't resent their entire existence, and I might buy into this obvious fucking farcical corporate propaganda piece.

Fuck you, eat the rich.

(Not you, Op, the author)

And you think think Christo-fascists aren't into all that because...

Survey shows most people wouldn't pay extra for AI-enhanced hardware | 84% of people said no (www.techspot.com)

Companies are going all-in on artificial intelligence right now, investing millions or even billions into the area while slapping the AI initialism on their products, even when doing so seems strange and pointless....

Kraiden ,

someone tried to sell me a fucking AI fridge the other day. Why the fuck would I want my fridge to "learn my habits?" I don't even like my phone "learning my habits!"

Kraiden ,

I think you're being sarcastic, but I unironically agree. Cars and fridges can, and should stay dumb, with the notable exception of battery management systems in electric vehicles. That's the single acceptable use case for a car IMHO.

Kraiden ,

Now THIS I could get behind! Still not AI though. it's a very dumb timer system that would be very useful. 1950's tech could do this!

Kraiden ,

what's the affordable option for daytime viewing with the curtains open?

Kraiden ,

Ye, that'd be sick! and that's also not what was being sold! this fridge did none of that. What exactly made it "AI" I didn't bother to find out, but I work in IT. I guarantee it wasn't this. Also, not convinced I want my fridge to be able to spend my money for me. I want to be able to have a Ramen month if I need/want

Elon Musk calls for “criminal prosecution” of Twitter/X ad boycott perpetrators (arstechnica.com)

After the House of Representatives Committee on the Judiciary released a report accusing the Global Alliance for Responsible Media (GARM) of colluding with companies to censor conservative voices online, Elon Musk chimed in. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Musk wrote that X “has no choice but to file suit against the...

Chinese space firm unintentionally launches its new rocket (arstechnica.com)

The rocket was undergoing a static fire test of the stage, in which a vehicle is clamped to a test stand while its engines are ignited, when the booster broke free. According to a statement from the company, the rocket was not sufficiently clamped down and blasted off from the test stand “due to a structural failure.”...

I suspect it's actually worse there. This guy has a series called "China fakes everything" which is worth watching

I don't think what he's saying about Falun Gong is so far fetched to be outside the realm of plausibility.

There's been enough reports of similar treatment of other groups, like the Uyghurs and Tibetans, from reputable sources that I believe something is going on there.

As for sources, if the CCP is half as bad as he makes them out to be, it would be irresponsible of him to give sources.

I don't know enough to refute anything you've said, but frankly you're less credible than him right now. I mean no offense but you have a single comment on your account and you've offered nothing to support your claim of twisted truth.

Too much smoke to conclude there's no fire

Kraiden ,

To be fair, none of that was in your original post. Not knowing all of that, I think it was a safe assumption you meant the allegations of mistreatment by the CCP, rather than the Falun Gong claims of benevolence.

Obviously you didn't though, and a quick Google search suggests you might have some valid points. I didn't know any of that!

However, I do want to point out that you could say most of the same things about fundamental Christians, and while I'd personally take the same view of those types ( I do believe they're a dangerous cult) I wouldn't say anyone calling them peaceful religious types was engaging in "Alex Jones level of manipulation of the truth" and wouldn't discount them entirely for holding that view. Particularly when, as you say, it's very likely they are actually being persecuted

But hey, if nothing else I think you've shown that I have no idea what I'm talking about here. Maybe that comparison doesn't actually hold. Also, for all I know he's a bought and paid for propagandist. Honestly, nothing surprises me these days

Kraiden ,

I'd like to see stats on that, because there are equally many 2nd language speakers in English speaking spaces as well. Not to mention the brits, irish, aussies, kiwis, canadians, etc, and that's before we get into this list of places with a non majority first language population, like many countries in Africa.

I think the percentage of Americans on the internet will be higher, but still not a majority

Recently found out about https://elan.school/ which ended up being run by ex "students." It's not the same thing, but there are parallels. Conversion therapy is essentially brainwashing at it's core, and I find it fascinating (in a horrifying, train crash, can't look away, kind of way) that in both cases, ex members become involved in perpetuating the horror.

eta: I agree it does not absolve them

Kraiden ,

I'd say it's because Apple's implementation isn't essentially spyware at it's core. The Microsoft implementation was straight up deranged and dangerous, frankly.

Kraiden ,

Dear god please no. This way madness lies. Your idea of "whatever you think works best" is not going to line up with whatever the next person that comes along thinks, and your codebase is about to get all kinds of fucked up.

Thinking code complete is going to save you is naive. Even in languages like C and Java, where it works best, you still need to be able to read and understand the code in context. There's no hope in a language like Ruby with all it's meta programming stuff

Kraiden ,

Yes and no. I agree that camel vs snake or that stupid mNameThing that was popular for a while, doesn't reeeeeaaally matter, although I would argue that convention over the language still has value. As an example, naming a Java variable with a capital letter would be confusing and annoying to any new devs joining the project, even if it's a valid identifier. Also it's handy to be able to look at something in ALL_CAPS and know that it's probably a static final, without having to check it's definition. I guess it's about finding that line between useful conventions and pedantry.

Kraiden ,

Hey, don't beat yourself up about it. Who hasn't accidentally bombed a camp of displaced peoples? The important thing is to apologize and try not to get caught bomb the next one.

iPhones And Androids Can Now Warn You of 'Secret Trackers' (www.ibtimes.co.uk)

In a collaborative effort, Apple and Google have developed an industry-standard detection feature called “Detecting Unwanted Location Trackers” (DULT) for Bluetooth trackers. This standard allows users on iOS and Android devices to be alerted if an unknown Bluetooth tracker is monitoring their location.

Kraiden ,

I... partially agree? There's a bit of a difference between the targeted tracking a private individual does with an airtag, vs the generalized, but equally creepy tracking google/apple/others do through widespread tech. One definitely poses a greater short term risk than the other

Kraiden ,

Psh, I'm already doing that! I'm using smoke signals to write this right now!

Serious response: How would a movement like that spread awareness of itself?

There needs to be a way to only get one push notification for every new message in a group chat

I dont know about others, but sometimes I am not able to check my phone, or be fully present in a conversation that I’m part of. Maybe I’m concentrating on work, or driving, and not able to look. It gets distracting when my phone is constantly buzzing and chiming for 5 minutes straight. Muting the chat can help, but if you...

Kraiden ,

I feel like it's app dependent. We use discord, and I feel like I get 1 notification per channel, but then other apps like LinkedIn (for shame!) are fucking incessant, and will REnotify me multiple times for things I've already dismissed. It's infuriating.

those running Facebook groups routinely find that their content isn’t even being shown to those who choose to follow them thanks to Meta’s outright abusive approach to social media where the customer is not only wrong, but should ideally have little control over what they see.

## ARE NOT THE CUSTOMER!!! YOU ARE THE PRODUCT!!!!

It astounds me how many people STILL don't understand this

Kraiden , (edited )

They should take it literally, because it is meant literally!

They're not exploiting customers, they are exploiting people. Those people are NOT their customers.

Facebook is literally selling people in data form. Everything you post, everyone you interact with, everything you look at across most of the web (not just facebook.com) is all catalogued and used to create a fingerprint that is a digital representation of you, and that is their product! "Essence of /u/Melt for sale here"

Their customers are advertisers.

After covid, this strikes me as a dangerous thing to say. Are you an immunologist and could you expound on this?

Thanks, that was a great answer! I had no idea it was so complicated. I was definitely in the naive camp there.

Kraiden ,

You're forgetting about the schmuck on the other end of that equation that has to answer the same question a thousand times over.

Kraiden ,

I feel this. I'm well aware that if my partner wasn't on Facebook, we wouldn't have a social life. I HATE that fact, but that, sadly, is where people put their events. I don't think I'd join if she left, but I can't deny that I benefit from her being on the platform.

She won't leave until everybody else does, and they won't leave until everybody else does, and so nobody leaves. It's dystopian.

Margaret Elaine Hamilton (née Heafield; born August 17, 1936) is an American computer scientist, systems engineer, and business owner. She was director of the Software Engineering Division of the MIT Instrumentation Laboratory, which developed on-board flight software for NASA's Apollo program. She later founded two software companies—Higher Order Software in 1976 and Hamilton Technologies in 1986, both in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Hamilton has published more than 130 papers, proceedings, and reports, about sixty projects, and six major programs. She invented the term "software engineering", stating "I began to use the term 'software engineering' to distinguish it from hardware and other kinds of engineering, yet treat each type of engineering as part of the overall systems engineering process."

On November 22, 2016, Hamilton received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from president Barack Obama for her work leading to the development of on-board flight software for NASA's Apollo Moon missions.

Huh, didn't know about her! She sounds like a badass lady!
