Yeah, again it’s EU setting a standard and the world is to follow. It’s amazing what we the people actually CAN do, if we just stand up to big corporations.

themurphy ,

Amazing. Great job, India, and all other regions who also have passed this.

themurphy ,

They also often brand something as “best in the world” when in reality it’s US only. And they are literally 4.2% the population of the entire world.

themurphy ,

The malware thing still deserves a headline. They just argue it’s stupid so many even have to use the library to begin with.

themurphy ,

So they did it, but purposely didn’t do it well enough. Next time it’s a 10% fine.

Apple’s App Store breaches EU’s Digital Markets Act (techcrunch.com)

A few months after opening a non-compliance case on Apple and the Digital Markets Act (DMA), the European Commission has shared its preliminary findings with Apple. And the bottom line is that the current App Store rules are in breach of the DMA. Confirmed violations of the DMA can lead to fines of up to 10% of global annual...

themurphy ,

Yeah, they will, but I think for this to work and be respected, they need to give companies this period, because it actually could take alot of time to change.

In this case, not so much, but it could be in the future, and the rules are the same regardless.

themurphy ,

I actually agree with you, that Apple most certainly will stall. And I also don’t think it’s optimal, but huge decisions on how to go forward do take time.

And I just think it may be better in the long run, that it seems more “fair” for the company, even thought it’s not.

Also, if Apple doesn’t comply this time and tries to find a new bullshit form of non-compliance, there’s no second chance according to the EU law. The fine will hit, so they certainly won’t do that.

themurphy ,

Well, yeah, in some places, but there’s countries where that’s a far worse idea than in Europe.

themurphy ,

Who cares.

If Apple don’t want to compete fair in the market, then others will.

And no iPhone user will miss an AI feature. Most of them don’t even understand how to use 80% of the phones features anyway.

themurphy ,

Well, if it’s illegal to do otherwise, some must do it, because the money involved are big.

themurphy ,

At least it opens up for challenge.

themurphy ,

Yeah, seems weird, but there’s also points where it’s not related at all.

One is a company using user data they didn’t tell they would use for this purpose, and illegally trying to do it anyway. They literally sell the data by making a product of it. It’s also a private company with stakeholders.

Other is EU scanning messages, but not selling them.

So it’s about who you trust basically.

themurphy ,

No, but that doesn’t make it good.

The whole world except a minority moved away from SMS a long time ago.

themurphy ,

I didn’t say that, but it might explain why Apple didn’t say much. I’m just keeping the discussion to the thread.

themurphy ,

Might be a 10thDentist take, but I could be surprised.

It’s reliable in specific use cases, I’ll give it that.

themurphy ,

Sometimes CEOs just get paranoid. You can either flip a switch an remove an app, or risk getting personally targeted by Russia.

Russia won’t get to you, most likely, but it’s the paranoia that gets you.

themurphy ,

If they didn’t open up to anyone else when EU implemented it back in March/April, they won’t do it now.

themurphy ,

uBlock might be out at some point, but modified APKs will probably live forever.

Pirates, aaargh… always finds a way.

themurphy ,

It’s the whole point. They’ll try to take over the AI brand by doing this.

"So what does AI actually stand for? "

“It stands for Apple Intelligence, of course!”

“Wow, Apple really is everywhere, they are so good and competent.”

This will happen too often.

themurphy ,

It does, because now it’s their own thing.

So instead of having what everyone else is having, they have their own and also hijack theirs, because Apple put the company name in it.

Aptoide app store hits iOS in the European Union (www.notebookcheck.net)

As a direct consequence of the European Union’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), the Google Play alternative Aptoide is now ready to take on iOS as well. The closed launch will take place tomorrow, and new users will need an invitation to join. Between 500 and 1,000 daily invites will be issued in the first stage....

themurphy ,

Pretty sure the Apple fee system was deemed illegal, no?

themurphy ,

At least they move in the right direction.

themurphy ,

That’s typically the start of any big law change. It almost always come up a few times in various iterations before being decided.

And I’m sure it will give California some trouble if all neighbour states doesn’t offer healthcare. So maybe it needs to come from the top?

themurphy ,

Imagine having a political party that deliberately tries to make everything worse for the people in broad daylight. And you can’t do shit about it, because you live in a two party system.

Yay. :)

themurphy ,

Wild to read how the US tax system works when you’re used to the EU.

Maybe one day you’ll also get automatic tax filling without lifting a finger.

themurphy ,

Sorry, out of the loop.

Did this app cost alot of money or something?

themurphy ,

Would anyone expect that they were anyway?

Even if you consider

  • sites getting bought up and rehosted elsewhere
  • sites changing names
  • personal throw-away WordPress sites
  • sites for educational purposes made by the students themselves
  • sites going bankrupt
  • news site, social media channels closing down

Can’t see why this isn’t very natural, and I’m actually surprised it’s not higher if you consider how fast that field is moving.

themurphy ,

Really shows that EU hit them where it hurts, when they refuse to do the same other places.

Only good for consumers when forced by law.

EU Commission opens formal proceedings against Meta under the Digital Services Act related to the protection of minors on Facebook and Instagram (ec.europa.eu)

The Commission is concerned that the systems of both Facebook and Instagram, including their algorithms, may stimulate behavioural addictions in children, as well as create so-called ‘rabbit-hole effects’. In addition, the Commission is also concerned about age-assurance and verification methods put in place by Meta....

themurphy ,

EU are the heroes we need, but don’t deserve.

themurphy ,

Did you forget to change profiles when answering yourself?

themurphy ,

Wild that EU needs to do this. Where’s the US in all this? The company is even based there.

themurphy ,

It will not hurt their revenue. There’s no way any of these companies haven’t thought about how to increase revenue with what they’re doing.

Just because we haven’t seen how yet, doesn’t mean it isn’t planned.

And it will not cost an “ungodly amount of money” to process these requests. Ofc Google will cache answers, because alot of what people ask, are the same. Then maybe the info can be updated sometimes, but ofc they won’t do it every time.

themurphy ,

Yeah, maybe. I’m just no amazed anymore how they’ll always figure out a way to screw customers over with new kind of ads.

I just think this will be the same.

Why does a state like California that has supermajorities in both houses of the legislature not have a livable wage, housing guarantees, universal healthcare, and other very progressive policies?

I keep being told it’s because of the Republicans that we can’t have nice things. So what gives in California? We should be overflowing with progressive policies.

themurphy ,

You’d have to understand what they are coming from - that they have to build up from a lower standard. You can’t just jump directly to super progressive without paving the road to it.

The people in the US are also more right leaning and religious in general compared to Europe. The US left is the EU right in some European countries.

California’s also still part of the US, and there will always be problems that they’ll share with their neighbour states.

TL;DR California DOES have nice things compared to the rest of the country, and I also believe that’s because of the lack of Republicans.

themurphy ,

Then the cheap EV’s doesn’t matter if they are not legal.

And the Volvo was not based on Geely. It was the other way around. They bought Volvo for this purpose exactly.

But I hope they will make better EV’s for the world. EV’s are generally just better cars, and it’s a clear road to less noise and toxic pollution.

themurphy ,

Yeah. Must be something wrong with the place and not you. It’s called projection.

themurphy ,

To stop others having the same idea.

themurphy ,

Did it though, or did they only react on reports from already infected users.

themurphy ,

They really won’t, and they can’t.

iOS supports 7 generations back or something for their devices, which means it’s all those affected by the new software.

It’s alot and it’s fair for everyone.

themurphy ,

ITT: People who has no clue about EU law and honestly think Apple will get away with this.

They won’t and they never had in the past.
