It’s strange how I’ve seen this exact claim before. How many expats do you know? I know a bunch of expats and there are quite a few Asian people in the expat community.

Fleppensteijn ,
@Fleppensteijn@feddit.nl avatar

People coming over for work/business: expats.

Unemployed people migrating to look for a better life or job: (im)migrants.

That’s how I understood it.

I’m kind of in between. I’m not an expat, but immigrant doesn’t sound right neither. I just call myself a foreigner.

Fleppensteijn ,
@Fleppensteijn@feddit.nl avatar

At least it takes away one reason for undercover German police to annoy foreigners with their “random” drug tests

Fleppensteijn ,
@Fleppensteijn@feddit.nl avatar

They make you empty your pockets and pat you down.

They look like gangsters claiming to be police, don’t even show a badge until you ask for it, they want all your stuff, like your wallet, to search through it.

Fleppensteijn ,
@Fleppensteijn@feddit.nl avatar

It would at least help if they stop assuming the only reason a foreigner from the free west would come through Germany is to sell weed.

Fleppensteijn ,
@Fleppensteijn@feddit.nl avatar

Yes, I didn’t spend a lot of time in Germany but it happened several times. I traveled by train and they claim the train stations are where people do their business

Fleppensteijn ,
@Fleppensteijn@feddit.nl avatar

Not at all :) But I suppose it was obvious I was a tourist

Fleppensteijn ,
@Fleppensteijn@feddit.nl avatar

I never see kids playing outside. There are parks, fields, forests around where I live.

Over time I learned there are actually kids living in my apartment building but I have no clue what they do all day. It’s kind of depressing.

Fleppensteijn ,
@Fleppensteijn@feddit.nl avatar

Playgrounds are fenced off and parents constantly stay within 2 steps of their helmet wearing kids here in Czech Republic. When those kids are older than toddler age, they disappear from public life.

It’s not like that in my home country where maybe they just sit around playing with their phones, but at least they’re outside with friends.

Fleppensteijn ,
@Fleppensteijn@feddit.nl avatar

Yes, for some reason shrubs and plants are ripped out more and more. Lots of nice areas are now just empty patches of grass. Not sure about the homeless but it is much harder now to find a place to pee in private if you’re outside a lot

Fleppensteijn ,
@Fleppensteijn@feddit.nl avatar

It happened before: computers, internet, smartphones, other machines were invented, productivity has only give up. And yet, we’re still working 8 hours per day (and earning less than before).

AI will get people fired. More people need work = lower salaries, more profit.

It would be great if we could all just work less, but they won’t let that happen.

Fleppensteijn ,
@Fleppensteijn@feddit.nl avatar

I’d say site blocking is SearXNG’s main selling point. (I switched when it got recommended to me on Lemmy :-).) Blocking just a few annoyances (Amazon, Pinterest, etc) make the search results so much better and relevant.

Also, Google is plagued by censorship.

Fleppensteijn ,
@Fleppensteijn@feddit.nl avatar

It’s a reoccurring internet discussion you can google. The rest of the world thinks Americans wear shoes inside, even on their beds, because that’s what we see in US movies/series, and Americans always deny they’d ever do such a thing.

I'm a US citizen, people in other countries, what do you think when you read stories like these about the US health care system? (www.vox.com)

I’d like to know other non-US citizen’s opinions on your health care system are when you read a story like this. I know there are worse places in the world to receive health care, and better. What runs through your heads when you have a medical emergency?...

Fleppensteijn ,
@Fleppensteijn@feddit.nl avatar

One thing that’s different out that there is no such thing as not being able to pay for health insurance. You are required by law to be insured. This also means the government mostly covers it for you if you can’t.

You may have to pay out of pocket for the first few hundred euros when something happens, but insurance covers the rest. There’s no way a person’s life savings would disappear overnight because of a medical issue. I’d rather die than pay what I sacrificed 30+ years to save up for.

Fleppensteijn ,
@Fleppensteijn@feddit.nl avatar

I may be somewhere in the middle. I see students around me traveling the world like it’s nothing, eating and drinking out all the time… Maybe they’re doing something right. I’m saving up half of my salary every month but for what? It’s never enough to own my own home and I’ll never retire anyway. Maybe having a little luxury right now instead of saving for an unknown isn’t that bad.

Fleppensteijn ,
@Fleppensteijn@feddit.nl avatar

(Paywall, can’t read – but) I spend over 8 hours per day working before I have time for cooking, shopping, cleaning etc. It’s around 9pm when my life begins. Who has time to sleep early?

Fleppensteijn ,
@Fleppensteijn@feddit.nl avatar

The majority of those visits were to sites that allow users to download the audio from YouTube URLs.

This is not piracy. We’ve always been allowed to record e.g. radio and TV for personal use.

Fleppensteijn ,
@Fleppensteijn@feddit.nl avatar

The Netherlands had a tax on blank CDs to “compensate” authors, essentially legalizing piracy (until the EU changed the rules).

Fleppensteijn ,
@Fleppensteijn@feddit.nl avatar

I do the same but I’m using the Tabstash add-on to organize the tabs

Fleppensteijn ,
@Fleppensteijn@feddit.nl avatar

It sucks to go through “prove you are human” screens that seem to time out half the time. Even worse when they put RSS feeds behind this Cloudflare wall

Fleppensteijn ,
@Fleppensteijn@feddit.nl avatar

There was a warez site that politely asked to click their ads to support them, which I did. This was around the year 2000, adblocking nor user tracking were really a thing.

Fleppensteijn ,
@Fleppensteijn@feddit.nl avatar

Wouldn’t it show the icon of an executable file and ask if you want to open it or execute it?

Fleppensteijn ,
@Fleppensteijn@feddit.nl avatar

My colleagues also like to shun me, which shouldn’t be a problem working remotely, but all the people who come to the office and have connections just got their promotions. Working hard and being good at your job are just not as important as being loud and knowing people. I just had a short holiday and I just can’t get my motivation to work anymore since I’m back.

So I’ll just keep slacking off and look for other opportunities in the meantime or maybe they’ll fire me at some point and I’ll have some time to travel or something.

Fleppensteijn ,
@Fleppensteijn@feddit.nl avatar

I tried using it for a while and kept saying I’m not interested in this topic on nearly everything, but Google News just keeps being shit. Can’t even call it news mostly.

Fleppensteijn ,
@Fleppensteijn@feddit.nl avatar

When I turned 18, I got a letter saying I would have gotten drafted if a war would break out while I was still under 30.

Fleppensteijn ,
@Fleppensteijn@feddit.nl avatar

Not too recent, it must have been around 2003.

Fleppensteijn ,
@Fleppensteijn@feddit.nl avatar

For me it’s like any other day. I wouldn’t mind working for the double holiday pay.

Fleppensteijn ,
@Fleppensteijn@feddit.nl avatar

I like appimages because I can install them where I want and you can just make a symlink in the bin folder.

Fleppensteijn ,
@Fleppensteijn@feddit.nl avatar

FYI It seems like at least the US government doesn’t want you to go there. So if Fmoviesz is down or something, you should be careful to avoid alternatives such as sflix.to, lookmovie2.to, flixtorz.to, sflix.to, movieuniverse.se, soap2dayto.day.

I hate that I am become this person but: are delivery drivers just allowed to call and say 'please come and meet me' now?

i get it’s a legitimate safety thing to some degree and to certain people but have you considered that i cannot leave my place right now which is why i paid 40 dollars you ess dee for taco bell. which was a legitimate safety thing for myself as well, frankly....

Fleppensteijn ,
@Fleppensteijn@feddit.nl avatar

If there’s a delivery, they usually call so you have time to get dressed and get down (because it’s always easily in the morning). That’s normal for package delivery, at least. I’ve never ordered food though.

Fleppensteijn ,
@Fleppensteijn@feddit.nl avatar

So you have a dirty crack, you got to get up, and waddle through the bathroom with pants on your ankles?

What Are Your Favorite Hidden Gem Android Apps?

I’m sure there are countless apps out there that are incredibly cool, interesting, or useful, but just haven’t hit the mainstream yet. Maybe it’s a productivity tool that’s boosted your efficiency, a unique game that’s kept you entertained for hours, or a niche app that’s catered perfectly to one of your hobbies or...

Essentials: DiskUsage, Total Commander

Music Folder Player - just a good music player that plays files in a folder instead of scraping all audio files from wherever as many players seem to do nowadays

Syncthing - to sync files with other devices

Fleppensteijn ,
@Fleppensteijn@feddit.nl avatar

You can disable right click hijacking with dom.event.contextmenu.enabled in about:config, I don’t think you need an extension for that

Fleppensteijn ,

I’m getting bored with my smartphone. Stuff like YouTube I never watch on my phone anyway, but imo YouTube has gotten much worse over time and I barely watch it at all now.

Fleppensteijn ,
@Fleppensteijn@feddit.nl avatar

By law, apartments like mine should have one, so I guess there may be one somewhere. If there would actually be a fire, I wouldn’t know where to look though

Showrss.info, the news, some comics from Reddit and a few YouTube channels and some blogs.

As far as I know, European banks never give you the option for balance inquiry. ATMs in e.g. Asia may give the option but it won’t work with a European bank card.

Fleppensteijn ,
@Fleppensteijn@feddit.nl avatar

Not with my ING account

Fleppensteijn ,

Browsers will grow with cache and settings etc.

I’m more curious about mobile apps in general. I had to install Microsoft Authenticator to log in to my work account and it costs 165 MB. It sucks because disk space is so limited

Fleppensteijn ,
@Fleppensteijn@feddit.nl avatar

Nah, I had my own authenticator (Aegis) until MS decided you can only use theirs

Fleppensteijn ,
@Fleppensteijn@feddit.nl avatar

It started nagging I need to switch to Microsoft’s authenticator but it was skippable for a while until it wasn’t 🤷‍♂️. They apparently use their own method that other authenticators can’t imitate.

Fleppensteijn ,
@Fleppensteijn@feddit.nl avatar

You probably have to boot to Windows first and let it finish the disk checking. Then make sure fast boot is turned off

Fleppensteijn ,
@Fleppensteijn@feddit.nl avatar

That’s what Tribler is for

Fleppensteijn ,
@Fleppensteijn@feddit.nl avatar

Often it’s not that great, but I believe it just needs more users to solve this

Fleppensteijn ,
@Fleppensteijn@feddit.nl avatar

browser.tabs.insertAfterCurrent - stop tabs from opening in weird places

media.videocontrols.picture-in-picture - stop those annoying pip videos

Nuke Anything - useful for getting rid of elements that are in the way

Multi-Account Containers

Decentraleyes

Fleppensteijn ,

So if I have games that don’t run, installing Steam should help?

Maybe wait?
