Suppose some dude on the street hands out books for free and gives you a copy. Does it make you unethical for accepting one? Would it be different online?

Suppose your government charges a “blank media tax” on storage devices to “compensate” creators with the assumption you already “illegally” download their content, didn’t you already pay for it anyway?

What if you’re downloading stuff as a hobby but you’d never pay for it if that would be the only other option, did anyone lose anything of value?

This is assuming - like digital media - some one took the time to spend his own free time to make copies of a physical medium.

There is no way of knowing whether the person has copyright or stole the first copy.

Or compare school books: the whole class buys one copy together, makes copies for every person to share costs. Likewise, a whole family can chip in to buy a car - you wouldn’t force them to buy a car each.

For me, this was the case. Got throttled to dial-up-like speed for a while, but I believe they gave up on this practice long ago. This was at least 20 years ago.

Do people just not use the YouTube subscription feed?

I consistently hear people on YouTube complain that the subscribe button doesn’t do anything for viewers, now that channel notifications are controlled by the bell. But it does do something: it puts the videos from that channel in your subscription feed, which is readily accessible on all versions of YouTube. So why do people...

Maybe unrelated but what I do when I find a good channel: I click their name, go to their videos tab and look if there’s other good stuff. Often videos a bit older have very few views while the newer one has loads, which makes me think nobody ever clicks through all this.

But I also don’t log in to Youtube. I had a separate Youtube account until they forced me to use a Google account. I can always delete my YouTube cookies when the recommendations get to shitty.

About 10% of those have an adblocker if I read correctly? I find that hard to believe. Maybe people who leave telemetry enabled are just different.

I suspect speedometers are never completely accurate. So instead of an exact number, they’ll use a needle and you can guess how fast you’re approximately going

I’ve been doing side jobs since I was 13. I never spent any of my own money while living with my parents. After finishing school, worked for some years and then traveled for a few years. While traveling, I also worked (for free food/accommodation mostly). You really don’t have to be rich, just be frugal.

Fleppensteijn ,
@Fleppensteijn@feddit.nl avatar

No, none of that. I don’t think I’ll ever own a home or retire so when I save up a little, I’d rather spend it on traveling.

When I can’t find something on Google, I usually switch to Ecosia (which uses Bing). It can have better results, depending on the topic.

I got a working Playstation off the street, also some chairs, cupboards, a mirror and other stuff.

It doesn’t say how they measure it. Some browsers identify as using Windows. Many people also use multiboot with Windows. Having Windows preinstalled also doesn’t mean you’re using it.

How to de-radicalize my mom's youtube algorithm?

She’s almost 70, spend all day watching q-anon style of videos (but in Spanish) and every day she’s anguished about something new, last week was asking us to start digging a nuclear shelter because Russia was dropped a nuclear bomb over Ukraine. Before that she was begging us to install reinforced doors because the...

It may help to not log on to YouTube at all. If she uses Google accounts, set YouTube to always open in a different container where you’re not logged in. The recommendations are set by a single id in the cookies which can easily be reset.

Last time I had a haircut it was advertised as ± 14 eur. But I couldn’t just get a haircut, they needed to wash it, put stuff in it etc. Ended up paying around 30 euros. It was my only haircut in the last 15 years and damn prices went up a lot

From what I understood is that the functionality that pastes selected text with middle-click is coded deep in the Linux kernel, so it doesn’t even use a clipboard and it would be hard to get rid of this functionality. As others mentioned, using normal copy-paste commands (ctrl+shift+c) shouldn’t be a problem because it uses a clipboard.

Are there really no stupid questions?

If we for instance take, as an example, someone thoroughly explaining something which is clear to 99,9999% of the earths adult population don’t you think the remaining .0001% could come up with some? I get that this community is a place to allow people to ask questions they can’t or won’t ask elsewhere but I certainly feel...

A thing of the past? Pause is used a lot to pause games.

Fleppensteijn ,
@Fleppensteijn@feddit.nl avatar

Don’t know what to tell you, for me it often works. Maybe give it a try? Esc usually brings you to the menu, which implies pausing, but it’s separate from pause key.

I suspect Google doesn’t want to to find stuff quickly so you can stay on their site longer, or they show sites that try to sell something as much as possible. I’m using Espanso (text expansion) to filter out a list of words like shop, prices, buy, Amazon, apple, pinterest. But still other search engines often have better results nowadays.

I was wondering who the hell still watches TV. My whole life is on my computer

Are there really that many terrible drivers out there?

I see so many YouTube videos of people running blatantly red lights and getting in accidents or other videos of people stopped and gunning it backwards, hitting something, then they put it in drive and launch full speed forwards and hit something else. What is going through these peoples mind? I just don’t get how there is...

The scariest is how many people I’ve been in a car with who just don’t see what happens around them. Like they get shocked when someone “comes out of nowhere” when they were there the whole time

Apparently they need to ask for consent before detecting whether you have an adblocker, according to EU law. I assume you’d be safe when you use a plugin like Consentomatic or I don’t care about cookies and you just don’t log in to Google.
