Buuf cursor store.kde.org/p/1249129/ because I like a cursor that is good looking and easy to see (unlike the default camouflaged dark cursor) and it fits with Buuf icons store.kde.org/p/1305826/

I’m using a dark Kvantum theme that I customized with dark red highlights.

Nobody ever asks about gaps on my CV. They always turn me down, list some bullshit reasons, like not enough experience and end with “and then there are some gaps on your cv so yeah”

I was sent to German countryside once for work and had to eat at a restaurant. The cheapest meal was already totally expensive. Some potatoes and green stuff. Not worth it.

I thought the foundation’s shady capitalist goals were pretty well known, not sure why you’re downvoted. They are against releasing patent on the covid vaccine, for example, because their goal is for people to profit from it

It sucks when headphones run out of battery, especially on a long trip

Do younger people go home earlier now? Or go out less? Is it since COVID?

Someone asked a question about how frequently young people have time to socialize and it made me think about what people do with their evenings. I recently asked my son to go to a concert (free ticket to see a band i know he likes) and he declined because it was an hour away on a weeknight. If we invite our kids or niece/nephew...

For dinner 6.30 seems very late to me imo

Fleppensteijn ,
@Fleppensteijn@feddit.nl avatar

Sounds fancy, where are you where that’s normal? We usually eat dinner after coming back from work, and maybe coffee and snacks in the evening around 8.30.

Fleppensteijn ,

Aren’t you all at work/school around that time?

Interesting idea. It sounds like a lot of extra work though

I’m usually starving at the end of my workday so I couldn’t imagine having to wait that long

Why are people hyped about RSS regaining relevance? (lemmy.world)

According to Google Trends, during the past few years, there has been nothing but a few minor bumps that faded away as quickly as they came. I love RSS because i do not have to scroll through dozens of different news sites all day and i would love it to return....

Fleppensteijn ,
@Fleppensteijn@feddit.nl avatar

I used to rely on news feeds through Firefox until they suddenly removed this feature. I switched to an RSS reader but around the same time, a lot of websites started dropping their RSS feeds. I’m out of the loop of why this happened and it’s probably one reason I feel so bored being online nowadays

Fleppensteijn ,
@Fleppensteijn@feddit.nl avatar

Feeds can be set up to just show part of the article so you’d still have to visit the site to read it all, which seems a better solution than losing the traffic completely. I’ve deleted many sites that just stopped their RSS at some point and I just kind of forgot about them.

Also, why can’t sponsored texts be added to RSS? It seems to me this would be hard to block by adblockers (and I’ll probably unsubscribe, but still).

@Fleppensteijn@feddit.nl avatar

I keep hearing about Google being part of the downfall but I honestly never heard of Google Reader until long after it got closed down. How was this different than other RSS readers?

Fleppensteijn ,
@Fleppensteijn@feddit.nl avatar

Maybe consider using a launcher for that, like albertlauncher (Linux) or ueli (Windows).

Fleppensteijn ,
@Fleppensteijn@feddit.nl avatar

I’m not really familiar with Gnome

Linux clipboard app which has functionality to paste multiple things after copying them in one go.

Edit: Everything seems too complicated, so I just went with this odysee.com/simplescreenrecorder-2023-09-03_11.02.…When you try to copy something, you copy something and then you paste it. This is fine, but I wish there was an app which would help me copy multiple items at different times and seamlessly help me paste it....

Fleppensteijn ,
@Fleppensteijn@feddit.nl avatar

And you can set a keybind to switch to previous/next item so you could do something like ctrl+, ctrl+v

Could child labor ever be acceptable if it's done consentually?

While child labor is viewed negatively, apparently child labor and child slavery aren’t the same thing, and child labor though it could still be exploitative/cruel in other ways, can be done voluntarily by the child, and with fair treatment/compensation/etc....

Fleppensteijn ,
@Fleppensteijn@feddit.nl avatar

Being imprisoned in school in name of education is already miserable though

Fleppensteijn ,
@Fleppensteijn@feddit.nl avatar

Why, am I being too controversial? I don’t believe the only possible alternative to child labor is schooling and definitely not in the way it is done today.

I had a look and it so happens there are 2 properties for sale within a few hundred meters from me.

€ 200,000 for a one room apartment of 46 m²

€ 560,000 for a large apartment with balcony

The nearest house costs a bit over € 1.2 million.

I got lucky with a cheap apartment ~40m² for € 662/month (which is almost as much as minimum wage here btw). Renting till I die I guess 🤷

Quit my job and find a place where I can live off 1000 a month

I’ve traveled on far less than a 1000 eur a month. With that kind of money, I can still save up.

Paypal is the worst.

I wanted to link a card to Paypal but it just kept saying I couldn’t transfer money to it. Support said they could see there was a block on it which would resolve after 72 hours. Weeks later I finally get a response: adding a card is not supported in your country. Why do they let me add a card and then lie to me?

I get some side cash in a foreign currency but have no way to get the money out without being charged a crazy fee

Otherwise, maybe browse with tor and download with torsocks and youtube-dl?

It depends on how the video is embedded and which format it is.

  • You can try to open Page Info (CTRL+I) > Media tab and see if you can find the video there (Firefox).
  • Sometimes you can right click and open frame in new window, which then allows you to save it (you may need to enable dom. event. contextmenu in about:config if they block right click)
  • Get the VideoDownloadHelper addin (Firefox)

Isn’t it the opposite? Nobody would give out their real name online until Facebook came along and normalized it. Google then forced your personal Gmail email account to be your account for everything as well.

A lot of companies get large investments from investors. Investors generally have a lot of stake in real estate.

Probably the same reason why small startups get fancy offices in the city center as soon as they get their investments, but there’s no budget for salaries.

It depends on your location whether you need a VPN. I’m good without it. If you want to pay, maybe you can pay for usenet instead.

I just started using Linux... any great tips?

I just installed Ubuntu 22.04.3 LTS (Cinnamon) on an empty laptop a couple days ago and have been experimenting a lot. I’m coming from being a Windows user since I was just a little kid playing old DOS games on my grandpa’s Win-98 PC back in around 2000. My daily driver is currently running Windows 10 but I am pretty adamant...

Switch from bash to zsh and make it look nice – dev.to/…/oh-my-zsh-powerlevel10k-cool-terminal-1n…Also replace ls with exa and cat with batcat. Remember you can set aliases in ~/.bashrc or ~/.zshrc.

If you like customization, I’d recommend KDE. If you like customizing keyboard stuff, you can customize your keyboard layout here: /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols. Also look into espanso for text expansion.

If you have an Android phone, get KDE Connect.

If you need new software, check apt search if it’s in there.

Banking, entertainment services, e-commerce used to be easily accessible from a browser but now are gradually phased out in favor of a native apps, why?

Does the end user really prefer apps over a web interfaces? Do native apps bring some security benefits? Isn’t maintaining apps for every single operating system and phone model out there more costly and time consuming than offering universally accessible web interface that works on any device? My banking apps use hundreds of megabytes for very little functionality and one bank actually uses Facebook trackers so there could be some truth to this. The only problem is that it would be illegal.

When in the Netherlands, I once had to apply for government benefits. They had to scrutinize all my bank transactions for a full year in the process. I’ve heard they need it for 5 years now. I started using ATMs more, saving up cash, in case I need to go through such a process again.

I do use card almost always now since it’s touchless but I’m not willing to give up cash.

I’d be happy if there is a way to block webshops. You can block e.g. Amazon but then there will be another shop in its place.

I wasn’t so happy with Searx but I think I’ll have a look at SearXNG if blocking is an option

Every time I’m in a plane, I get leg pain. I don’t know where people put their legs and be comfortable. Once I was up for 50 hours at least, got a bunch of beer on the plane and still couldn’t sleep.

I disagree. There are large groups of (lower class) people who consume mostly American media, e.g. through Facebook and it does have an effect. American politics are copied in Europe.

Fleppensteijn ,
@Fleppensteijn@feddit.nl avatar

Whether someone spends their personal resources to copy a medium digitally or physically doesn’t really matter to the copyright holder or author. They won’t get paid either way
