Thin clouds actually make it nice in a way, when you can see it through the clouds without burning your eyes. I remember in 2015 this happened. My parents refused to buy me eclipse glasses because they thought it was a waste.

Love how you can see the eclipse in the lens flare

Megachurches are the minority of churches though

Flax_vert ,

Lemmy has a weird hate-boner for Christianity. It’s like a visceral toxic hatred. Sure it would make more sense for you to take from the top one percent in society to actually solve the problem, but that way you don’t get to punish an entire religious group for their vocal minority 1% who squander wealth and strive for political power, using Jesus as nothing more than a stepping stool

Flax_vert ,

Yeah. I regularly attend multiple churches. There are a few bad eggs, sure, but 99% of people I talk to there are either lovely people or normal people. Same goes for workplaces as well. I don’t see Churches as being worse than any other environment I’ve been in. But when assholes are Christians, they weaponise the Bible to justify being an asshole. If anything I think Christians in general should be more vocal about things happening in churches that are not okay, but there may be a concern of causing division in an otherwise wholesome atmosphere.

I have a close friend who converted to Christianity, and they said that a fault they observe in Christians can be that they’re too nice and too vulnerable, to the point that people can get away with not very nice things.

I think Atheism gets a bad rap these days also. I’m sure most atheists are lovely people, but the people who make it known that they’re atheists, or make it their whole personality, are not.

‭Acts 16:25-31 ESV‬ [25] About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them, [26] and suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken. And immediately all the doors were opened, and everyone’s bonds were unfastened. [27] When the jailer woke and saw that the prison doors were open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself, supposing that the prisoners had escaped. [28] But Paul cried with a loud voice, “Do not harm yourself, for we are all here.” [29] And the jailer called for lights and rushed in, and trembling with fear he fell down before Paul and Silas. [30] Then he brought them out and said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” [31] And they said, “Comment ‘Amen’ on my latest TikTok, and you will be saved, you and your household.”

It looks like a real scene from a film at first glance

As a Protestant Christian, it doesn’t make any sense. I think it is just idiotic evangelical puritans being idiotic evangelical puritans.

However it is worth mentioning Catholics and Orthodox people don’t allow each other or Protestants to take communion. (Catholics might allow Orthodox but maybe orthodoxy forbids their own members, I don’t know that one)

Flax_vert ,

That type of specification would probably never happen.

Flax_vert ,

Same with Jehovah’s Witnesses not agreeing with or affirming the Nicene creed. Generally any sect that denies the Nicene creed is seen as non Christian

Flax_vert ,

They all generally affirm the same things though, it’s just the Bible doesn’t say exactly how to practice Christianity, so add two thousand years and weird theological technicalities like real presence (and how much real is the presence, it’s a spectrum), church structure and organisation, authority, etc, then you have a bunch of different denominations. Most of them though do actually respect each other in an ecumenical fashion. The “Catholics aren’t Christian” sect would be a fringe minority, the same type who would believe the world is 8,000 years old and that the KJV is the only proper English translation.

Flax_vert ,

I never heard of someone rooting their phone due to a 12 year old on tiktok telling them to

99% of self proclaimed Christians hate megachurches.

Anyway, I think with “all things are possible with God” really means if God consents to it, as Jesus said when praying: “Thy will be done”

Flax_vert ,

TIL.

Flax_vert ,

I think it isn’t really to do with the money itself but with the mindset. If you’re the type to dodge taxes and scam people, and love money above all, which is arguably what it takes to become rich, then you clearly aren’t a Christian transformed by God.

Flax_vert ,

Consider all of the nations with Christians, and all within. You have large denominations like Roman Catholics who make up the largest portion of Christendom, a sizable amount of Orthodoxy and then protestants. Protestantism itself is divided into denominations. You have classical protestants which also rule out megachurches, such as the Anglicans/Episcopalians (Anglican communion forming the third largest Christian communion) Reformed/Presbyterians and Lutherans. Maybe a little sprinkling of Moravian and Methodist in there. Then you have evangelical Christianity with Baptists, non denominationals, some pentecostals. There’s low church baptists who again would mostly be anti megachurch. Imagine your small rural congregation “me and my KJV” type.

Generally to get to the megachurches you need to go down the pentecostal/charismatic side of the non denominationals. Sure there’s a sizable amount, but when you put all of Christianity in perspective, you can see it’s a small slice.

So the first the Bible is saying something you want it to say to make the argument “Christianity bad”, and whenever teaching has context provided and is elaborated on further on in the scripture, then it’s a “contradiction”.

Got it.
