Is having an Android really a deal-breaker for some people?

I asked if people chose iPhone for the blue bubbles elsewhere a couple days ago, and while there was some good discourse on that post, the blue bubbles definitely also came up as a reason.

In my experience, when people find out my texts are green, they oftentimes would rather switch to a different platform altogether like Instagram or just not text at all.

Is this actually a deal-breaker in friendships out there?

richieadler ,

I live in a country where the dollar value of iPhone makes them more of a luxury item, sought by people of means or by hipsters.

Most people here tend to communicate via WhatsApp. People with iPhones probably discriminate others for many other reasons before even reaching the bubble color for messages, so they self-select out of the lives of most people.

ZestycloseReception8 ,

I live in the US and this was never a problem for me? If it is then these people aren’t really your friends. Think of it as a litmus test for finding friends.

jet ,

I did run into some friends who were just surprised people bought phones outside of iPhone. But they were still my friends. It didn’t matter to them they just hadn’t thought of a world without iPhone users

ZestycloseReception8 ,

no I’m not saying that there aren’t non ahole iphone users but there outliers it seems like. I guess me and you got lucky because it seems like for the average teenager in the states your “friends” treat you poorly if you have an Android.

jet ,

in my experience nobody texts anymore anyway, its all signal or some other messenger.

ZestycloseReception8 ,

I mean I was born in 98 so I’m just barely Gen Z and even when I was in middle school and high school SMS and MMS was the predominant way students communicated with each other. this was around mid 2010s so not that long ago HS and middle. schoolers were using SMS. the amount of people using non SMS messaging services is a lot less than you think. the most. The USA has 259mil active users sending 2 trillion texts every year. as. of 2023 in the USA signal has a 100mil downloads but only 40mil active users. the two most. popular non SMS service in the USA are Facebook messenger at 52% of the population using it and WhatsApp at 25%. so no it’s not all signal or some other messenger not by a long shot

TenderfootGungi ,

It is a pain in group chats. That one green bubble means the chat falls back to basic text. That means I effectively cannot send a video (possible, but unusable quality).

At that point I would rather use something like WhatsApp. Which is fine if everyone in the group has it. At least it is cross platform.

But I am seriously considering buying my sister, who has a cheap husband, an iPhone just so she does not mess up a family group chat.

iPhone user Most of the world uses Whatsapp, so this is a non issue for me

solstice ,

I’m not sure if it is possible for me to care less what type of phone somebody uses.

If I found out somebody was judging me based on my phone I would seriously consider breaking up with them.

I’m surprised and dismayed we are even having this conversation, and some of the other replies are deeply troubling.

kissmedanascully ,

I understand it can give some girls the ick. Try not to let them see your phone.

RagingNerdoholic ,

I don’t care what phone you have, but if you have an iPhone, I will assume you are an idiot by default until proven otherwise.

solstice ,

I mean…I just assume everyone is an idiot in general until proven otherwise, no need to discriminate.

RagingNerdoholic ,

lol fair enough, although iPhone ownership puts a finger on the scale

Deuces ,

I prefer android’s ability to customize my phone to the point that I can break it, but I respect apples security and can see why some people would prioritize that

RagingNerdoholic ,

In what way is iOS more secure than Android?

pineapplelover ,

I convert all my friends to switch to Signal. If they like blue, then let’s go there. E2EE and easy to use

KittyBitTees ,

People that use Apple messaging are clearly lost and don’t know good software exists.

SPOOSER ,

I use an Android, and I wouldn’t necessarily say that Android sms messaging is good software. Most of our sms apps either suck, are mined by corporations for data, or both. Apple isn’t better in those regards, I’m just saying that it isn’t one of Android’s strengths over Apple.

KrisKao ,

Most of the world uses WhatsApp, and it does not matter if you have iPhone or Android. Are you in the USA? I hear it is the only country where people use apple messages so much that it matters.

Deuces ,

As a us person, I think that’s true. I have WhatsApp exclusively to talk to my friends that live abroad

sheogorath ,

This is more of a US centric problem, in other countries this hasn’t been really a problem as everyone is using WhatsApp/Line/Telegram to communicate. More younger people are actually using discord to text with each other. I think this issue will get less relevant as time goes on.

Pika ,

It’s not a strict deal breaker for me, I use an Android myself. But I will definitely preach to people the differences between Apple and Android, because in the US there is a vast divide and for some reason they think that it’s a status symbol to have an Apple device, and they will boast like it’s some great thing. It’s super fun to pull up the hardware specs and show them that my phone Beats there new iPhone in almost every category. Then I end it with saying that both systems have ups and down, apples biggest Pro is going to be their interface, but if you are a techie or want actual control over the phone itself stick with Android. Most of the “incompatibilities” between the two systems, are Apple generated, meaning that they’ve gone out of the way in some way to actively forbid it. Bluetooth is a perfect example of this, Apple devices support it for audio transfer and Airdrop uses Bluetooth for its transfer medium, but you can’t transfer files strictly over Bluetooth because the functionality has been intentionally removed to allow the walled garden state.

NikkiDimes ,

I’ve had people shit on me for not being able to “afford” an iPhone. I have an $1800 Galaxy Fold, thanks.

Shadesto ,

It’s kinda funny because both sides have a skewed view of the other. I see apple users as less tech-savvy and generally more of the “general” population (see: normies).

OrnateLuna ,

Eh even for Android most people are normies to the point where I wouldn’t see the simplification that normies use Android an incorrect one. Sure android probably has a higher % of non normies but even then I doubt it’s a high percentage.

Assuming by android we mean the android flavour that came with their phone

adibis ,

What are blue bubbles?

Nilz ,

When you text with iMessage/iOS you will get blue text bubbles from people who use iMessage/iOS and green text bubbles from people who use Android/other. I don’t have an iPhone so I may not be 100% correct.

Tathas ,

Apple also intentionally made the white-on-green contrast poor so that texting non-Apple people would be harder on your eyes.

adibis ,

Sounds like Apple, yeah…

pineapplelover ,

When iphones send sms to other iphones it’s a blue bubble. When iphones send to androids, it’s a green bubble. When Android users send sms, they can make it pink if they want.

Epicurus0319 ,

I’d imagine not

In US it’s stupid trench warfare of blue vs green message. As an Android user I have had to explain MULTIPLE TIMES that this is not about Android’s lack of capabilities but rather the unwillingness of Apple to use RSC. Almost always my explanation falls on deaf ears.

infinitevalence ,

Why don’t you just get an iPhone then?

/S

peterg75 ,
@peterg75@lemmy.world avatar

Because:

  • I like the Android ecosystem
  • I like having a wide choice of devices
  • I do not like the “my way or the highway” approach to software/UX design
  • I like to be able to choose latest mobile tech without having to wait for it to be deemed “worthy” by one giant corp.

Etc, etc, etc.

I just die a little everytime I get asked that which is why I had to.

I just like Android more and “your” messaging convenience is not my concern.

It’s annoying though as I am literally the only android user in my direct and extended family so they iChat away and I’m left out or it’s assumed my wife will update me if required.
