CaptainHowdy ,

I’m still thoroughly stoked for this game.

CaptainHowdy ,

Only reserve IPs that are outside of the DHCP range you’ve configured.

CaptainHowdy ,

Wat. There are three sides my dudes. What am I missing?

CaptainHowdy ,

I use/admin Linux each and every day at a professional level and at least once a week I’m final panel doggo.

Do you prefer to buy games on Steam or GOG?

On the one hand I like GOG because it has no DRM and has better prices (in my country) than Steam and I have the feeling that on the one hand it follows more the open source philosophy than Steam itself, but Steam has helped enormously to play Windows games on Linux, so I haven’t really made up my mind....

CaptainHowdy ,

I buy multiplayer games on steam since that’s where my friends are. I pirate almost everything else unless I want to support the developer (typically small indie games or high quality stuff like FromSoft). If I buy a game, I do prefer GOG but steam can be convenient, especially on Linux.

CaptainHowdy ,

There are huge archives of flash animations and you can install a safe “emulator” for playing flash that even runs in your browser. Look up Ruffle. I can’t remember the name of the big archive site I used, but it didn’t take much googling. I know I was able to find Homestar, Larry Carlson, Adam Phillips (bitey), joe cartoon and salad fingers as well as a ton of games from back in the day.

Republicans want someone younger than Donald Trump as president: new poll (www.newsweek.com)

In a YouGov poll conducted between July 25-29, 59 percent of Republicans surveyed said they would prefer a president under the age of 75. Trump celebrated his 78th birthday in June. Forty percent said they had no preference, and just two percent said they would prefer a president over the age of 75....

If you’re doing it right, containers are less like VMs and more like cgroups. If orchestrated correctly it uses less system resources to run lots of services on a single system/node.

That said, I’m a devops/infrastructure/network professional and not a developer, so maybe I’m missing something from the dev experience… But I love containers.

Docker does kinda suck now, though. Use podman or another interface instead if you can help it.

CaptainHowdy ,

Wait… You’re telling me that they continue to do crimes with guns even when the guns are illegal? Criminals? Really? I refuse to believe it.

CaptainHowdy ,

I have never seen this actually happen and I have a lot of experience with gaming with randos (I’m old and I also started a gaming club in college that had over 75 members with at least 15 of them being female). I’ve been playing MTG and D&D at local shops for decades now and I’ve never once seen other dudes simping or fighting over a girl at the table.

Not saying it can’t happen, nerds are nerds and do often lack social skills. But from my experience (and from what I’ve heard from my female gamer friends), this has got to be a rare situation.

CaptainHowdy ,

I’m 14 and this is deep!

/S

But for real I love this. Reminds me of the beauty of transitional ecosystems.

CaptainHowdy ,

Airsonic Advanced and DSUB on Android are pretty good options since DSUB has advanced local caching options.

I aquire my music then run it through Picard for tagging which places it into my NAS where it is mounted to airsonic and jellyfin containers for consumption.

The jellyfin apps have gotten a lot better and I find myself using feishin and finamp more often lately.

CaptainHowdy ,

So what would happen if a lot of us liberal minded folks bought up all this worthless stock on the cheap? Would maga fucks pay us (by buying back our interest at a healthy margin) not to influence the trump media group with demands for “woke” media to profit on our investments? 🤔

CaptainHowdy ,

Yeah me too. She’s become what they said she was it seems.

CaptainHowdy ,

This is only possible if you get your phone from the carrier, right? They wouldn’t be able to differentiate if you were using an unlocked phone you got from Google or Amazon?

CaptainHowdy ,

I have one word for you, OP: Racism.

The marijuana tax stamp law was put in place because American politicians and voters didn’t like black and Mexican people. At the time, it was primarily used by those demographics. Now, of course, it’s used pretty equally by everyone.

CaptainHowdy ,

It’s not just right wing media, all media does this because it drives profits.

Fuck Fox News though, they are terrible for a multitude of reasons.

CaptainHowdy ,

You must be in an area like SF or NYC. Or this is a luxury space.

CaptainHowdy ,

It’s because of what you said: no motive. Crime like this is only sensational when the motive can be applied to some fictional stereotype of villain that could be stopped by new legislation or a war or whatever.

Also I think a big reason we don’t discuss this specific event is the caliber of rifle used. Contrary to popular belief, non “assault” weapons can do a shocking amount of damage in an environment where the targets can’t retaliate. See the Virginia Tech shooting.

Long story short: if it ain’t political and can’t be made political, people in the US won’t care for long.

CaptainHowdy ,

Turns out the dude was likely involved with CSAM, as his brother was arrested for it almost immediately after the shooting.

From what I’ve seen, his brother was one of the only people still in touch with him during his last days.

CaptainHowdy ,

My theory is that the fuckwad was involved in CSAM in some big way because his brother was arrested for it right around the same time as the shooting.

My guess is that the FBI has some reason not to tie them together yet.

It wasn't just the goblins — is J.K. Rowling doing Holocaust denial now? (forward.com)

The most famous forms of Holocaust denial and revisionism tend to focus on Jews, casting doubt, for example, on how many were exterminated in the camps. But denying the impact the Nazis had on the other groups they targeted, including queer and trans people, disabled people and Romani people, is still Holocaust denial. Maybe...

CaptainHowdy ,

I wonder if you have read/heard the things Rowling has actually said about trans issues.

I also find it ironic that you liken her to a chrisofachist, when in the early 00s she was basically crucified by those people.

I certainly don’t agree with everything she has said. But some of her points are genuine “maybe this is something that deserves conversation and contemplating”, which are immediately construed as transphobic or hateful by many people who haven’t personally read/heard what she said. People jump to screaming online instead of trying to refute her points.

Again, I do NOT agree with her on many, many things!

CaptainHowdy ,

Lenovo X1 carbon is what you are looking for. I got one (10th Gen) and slapped fedora on it and it’s been absolutely awesome.

Battery life could be better, but I haven’t tweaked it.

Good luck finding a quality new laptop with Linux support that also has a rj45 port. Framework might be an option though. But I just use a gigabit Ethernet usb3 adapter and it works fine

CaptainHowdy ,

The problem is that e-ink is a patented technology and the patent owner charges insanely high royalties for using it in your product.

CaptainHowdy ,

Iirc there’s a pine watch. Maybe it didn’t have e-ink

CaptainHowdy ,

Not sure if they are still available, but after pebble shut down, I got this Chinese watch called amazfit bip. It has a color e-ink display and lasts roughly a week on a full charge.

I was able to sync to my phone using FOSS called gadgetbridge so I didn’t have to install sketchy Chinese software on my phone.

CaptainHowdy ,

Yeah it was the first one

CaptainHowdy ,

Paying taxes? Most of that goes to military spending in the US

CaptainHowdy ,

I don’t disagree with the sentiment here, the world is fucked and unchecked crony capitalism is the problem. The rich get richer and the rest of us barely get by. Also fuck Huffman for ruining the only social media platform I’d used consistently for over a decade.

That said, Huffman’s salary is not even close to the number reported here. He makes something like $350k in a year (still a wildly high salary, no one person needs to make that much in a single year!), this “compensation” is closely tied to his equity in Reddit and it’s predicted value when the company goes public.

Most CEOs are compensated in this way and I think it’s not exactly a bad way to do it (partially for employees but mostly for investors). This value is tied to performance, so if the CEO does stupid shit and ruins the company, it directly affects his compensation. This can be a good thing if that CEO makes good business decisions, which can lead to more jobs and more stability for the workers. I realize this is not always the case, but that’s the general idea.

It still sucks, and I still think no individual should make more money than is needed to live comfortably, but it’s not like he’s raking in 193 million every year like it seems from this tweet.

CaptainHowdy ,

Just saw this morning that the police are saying the death was not caused by injuries from the fight.

Taylor Swift launches legal broadside at a college student who tracks private jets via public data (www.seattletimes.com)

In late December, Swift’s camp hit Jack Sweeney, a junior studying information technology at the University of Central Florida, with a cease-and-desist letter that blamed his automated tracking of her private jet for tipping off stalkers as to her location. In the letter, attorneys from the law firm Venable accused Sweeney of...

CaptainHowdy ,

I have a legitimate question: why is this public information? Like… I’m not taking sides either way, I just don’t understand the reason that the current location of someone’s private property (her jet) is considered public info. They location of someone’s car or boat isn’t publicly available… So why a plane?

I understand that flight controllers need access to this info for logistics, but that’s not really public. They also need access to air waves for communication and those are heavily regulated.

CaptainHowdy ,

Thank you! This is exactly the kind of info I was wanting to see.

CaptainHowdy ,

Thank you for the detailed info! This is the kind of response I was hoping for

Where are the good political songs? (piped.video)

I feel like there are lots of parallels between the eighties and now (recession/inflation, yuppies/inequality, skin-heads/fascists, hot-cold wars etc.) but there used to be protest music! Where is that stuff now? Music that’s intelligent and outraged - like we should be!...

CaptainHowdy ,

Stand Out Riot is an incredible ska/hardcore band with mostly political lyrics. They are from UK so I don’t get all of the references, but they are fucking awesome anyway.

CaptainHowdy ,

Yeah it sucks the family ignored the quarantine orders, I agree. Maybe they should be held liable for that.

What concerns me more, and what we should be talking about, is that the kid shows up at the hospital and two other patients contact the disease. At the hospital.

Being at a hospital should not be a threat to ones health. This along with other hospital borne illness and the insane amount of preventable deaths from medical negligence should concern all of us.

CaptainHowdy ,

I’m not sure I would want my ip address being tied to the activity of a large amount of strangers who want to hide their IP address. Seems like a good way to get a visit from the friendly neighborhood black van.

CaptainHowdy ,

I’m curious as to why these companies are doing this. The article isn’t clear. It does mention “public pressure” but that’s never really stopped a company, especially if they are making crazy profits, from continuing to make those profits. Big pharma doesn’t just stop over charging out of the goodness of their hearts.

Is there some new regulation or foreign competitor behind this?

CaptainHowdy ,

I have a short story that perfectly exemplifies the problems with Google and the Internet in general.

I dropped a melatonin gummy on the floor near my dog, and then I couldn’t find it (he didn’t eat it, it rolled under the couch). So I did what anyone would do, and googled “my dog ate melatonin”.

The first result was an article that said “melatonin is perfectly safe for dogs to eat, no worries!”. Whew! Coast is clear! I wiped the nervous sweat from my brow and felt my panic melt away…

But just as I was about to close Google, I see that the second result states clearly “melatonin is toxic for dogs, your dog is gonna die and it’s your fault. Call the vet now!”. (I exaggerate, but it definitely said toxic and to call emergency vet services). Panic resumes, sweat returns.

Dude… What the fuck am I supposed to do in that situation? Both of the articles seemed like they were legit and yet had wildly different messages.

Thankfully I found the gummy a few minutes later and didn’t end up at the emergency vet, but it was a confusing and concerning situation.

This doesn’t even bring up the garbage AI generated content that is now 9 out of 10 top results from Google. If you don’t want that shit, and want something written by a human being, you basically have to put “Reddit” in your query… And I think I know how most of us here feel about Reddit…

CaptainHowdy ,

I’m sorry, but that is just ridiculous. I might even say impossible. There’s some kind of distortion of the numbers here.

CaptainHowdy ,

Nope, not at all. I know several former hippies (parents of friends and family) who are very GOP.

My dad (big hippie, but barely a boomer) actually voted for Trump in 1, but now really regrets it and gets stoked about every court case against him

CaptainHowdy ,

I buy some physical books, but mostly either borrow from the library or for some rare stuff I aquire backup copies from various places online.

If there is a graphical element to a book, like an atlas, or even books like “House Of Leaves” or “pallbearers club” where the ebook is inferior due to the formatting and typesetting, I’ll buy the physical copy.

Recently I’ve been buying really premium versions of books I reread like the deluxe slipcase of LotR and other tolkien stuff (histories box set is next on my list) and the Akira box set. These are things I read every couple of years so I just like to have and hold the really nice stuff.

I also usually like to get physical copies of RPG books because it’s faster to use at the table and I don’t get distracted by a tablet. The physical version of Mork Borg (and feretory + heretic) is in itself a work of art.
