Not being diagnosed with ADHD until my 30’s, I was concerned about taking stimulants… Man did they ever highlight all the ways I had adjusted my life to try and cope, and all the self-medicating I was doing with caffeine and energy drinks. While some adjustments were still necessary, I could finally do things like:

  • wash the dishes without wanting to peel my skin off
  • regularly cook meals instead of eat garbage
  • get my work done in a normal 8 hour day instead of taking 12 hours and stressing out all day about the time I was wasting and ultimately having no time for my chores

Considering how damn hard it is to get meds now because everyone else is abusing them, I’m off them more often than I’m on them. Back to negative performance reviews, stressful days, viciously hating what should be boring or mildly annoying tasks for anyone else. Only difference now is I don’t hate myself because I finally understand what parts of this are and are not my fault. I mean that helps me live with myself but I’d really rather just have meds again.

I have unironically been preaching the powers of text and JSON, and have some converts. Universal compatibility is great.

CancerMancer ,

Microsoft made mod organizers not work?

CancerMancer ,

In the first paragraph of JSON5’s site:

It is not intended to be used for machine-to-machine communication.

YAML is not supported by a lot of enterprise software (example: Azure pipelines supports it but Power Automate does not). JSON, XML, CSV, or failing that Text are the safe bets. We use a few options for reading or building presentation layers quickly. Ultimately the idea is to move data around in a way that is friendly to our current and future applications.

CancerMancer ,

Well this is why I’m asking, it does seem to work for my 100% Linux friend.

A lot of management are coming out of “business schools” that are little more than indoctrination. These people don’t know the difference between a leader and a manager and qualify as neither.

CancerMancer ,

Ah yes like the Boeing employees who shot themselves in the head twice.

CancerMancer ,

Having been the guy in an org shouting not to do something only for it to come back to us this way, the finger-pointing that begins is nuts. Often the people who tried to stop the “feature” from rolling out are the first to get blamed for it being shit.

Classic CYA, make sure everything you said is in writing somewhere.

CancerMancer ,

I remember the “works best on IE” warnings of old, looks like we might be heading back there.

CancerMancer ,

I don’t want a dumb phone but I would 100% take a phone with a back that isn’t glass, high repairability, and full control over the OS. Make it THICC and put a big battery too.

CancerMancer ,

Not EU so I’ll have to wait. It cost me around $40 USD in shipping and taxes just to import a damn Pinecil to Canada, my country is ridiculous.

CancerMancer ,

Wow they really did find a way to make it worse. Impressive.

CancerMancer ,

From what I understand about phone design, it allows for the smallest possible design that can still do NFC and wireless charging, while keeping that premium feel.

I don’t give a damn about premium feel, I just want a no-nonsense phone that does what it’s fucking supposed to while still being serviceable.

CancerMancer ,

Ah so it’s not about rights and freedoms, it’s about the right opinions and the freedom of your side. The opinions of hypocrites can and should be discarded.

In countries like India and China where women are less free to choose quality of life and human connections over money, a lot more of them go into IT.

Study reveals "widespread, bipartisan aversion" to neighbors owning AR-15 rifles (www.psypost.org)

A recent study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences reveals that across all political and social groups in the United States, there is a strong preference against living near AR-15 rifle owners and neighbors who store guns outside of locked safes. This surprising consensus suggests that when it comes...

CancerMancer , (edited )

Millions of M1 Carbines were widely and affordably available for years before the AR-15 was a thing. It, like the AR-15, is also an easily-handled magazine-fed semi-automatic rifle firing intermediate cartridges, and was intended for military service.

Virtually no school shootings occurred until Columbine (and the media coverage surrounding it, and the miserable state of American society) set off the waves of shootings that continues to this day. It’s worth noting they didn’t use either AR-15s or M1 Carbines, that didn’t become common until later.

If the AR-15 is the cause of this because it is an easily-handled magazine-fed semi-automatic rifle firing intermediate cartridges, how do people explain the near complete lack of mass shootings despite the wide adoption of the M1 Carbine in a time when gun ownership was even less restrictive?

Not a hard enough question? Ok try this one: actual machine guns used to be widely available and much more affordable than they are today. Why is there relatively little recorded violence with them?

CancerMancer ,

In Canada? Not legally. In America: no new automatic guns can legally be made for sale. The existing stock of legal automatics requires a special process to transfer from one owner to another, and they are expensive.

CancerMancer ,

We saw it during the BLM protests: the police are very willing to injure and kill unarmed protesters, but play very nicely when armed protesters are around. That convinced me.

CancerMancer ,

I’m a leftist Canadian trade unionist who owns guns. Please explain what part of this makes me a coward.

CancerMancer ,

An idea for the fediverse and beyond: maybe we should be setting up instances with copyleft licences for all content posted to them. I actually don’t mind if you wanna use my comments to make an LLM. It could be useful. But give me (and all the other people who contributed to it) the LLM for free, like we gave it to you. And let us use it for our benefit, not just yours.

This seems like a very fair and reasonable way to deal with the issue.

Make sure to add mandatory EGS accounts later.

Stopped myself before I got in as far as you but realized my roadblock is art. I can’t solve this one: I lack the creativity and patience to do the art, and naturally nobody will ever work for free, nor should they.

I wasn’t really sure how to proceed so I started studying for various tech and cloud certs instead. Might as well put my skills to use somewhere.

CancerMancer ,

In an ideal world we’d all be encouraged to take on creative pursuits and have the ability to do so, rather than feel guilty for them. Maybe someday, right?

CancerMancer ,

I got asked by a team of first timers who have never done any professional coding or design if I wanted to chip in on a competitive MMOFPS they want to make.

That’s not going to happen. Between the rise of cheating, the insane hardware and optimization requirements of an MMOFPS, the general lack of interest in the genre (most have died due to low player counts), and the sheer amount of time and effort involved in designing and balancing the game even after it’s largely feature complete? Forget it, I’m better off buying lottery tickets than hoping for anything to come of that.

AM radio law opposed by tech and auto industries is close to passing | Ars Technica (arstechnica.com)

A controversial bill that would require all new cars to be fitted with AM radios looks set to become a law in the near future. Yesterday, Senator Edward Markey (D-Mass) revealed that the “AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act” now has the support of 60 US Senators, as well as 246 co-sponsors in the House of Representatives, making...

Considering the growing importance of digital radio communication, Computer-Assisted Design, electronic repair, etc. I’d love to see this kind of thing.

Shit I was around for that and I don’t even remember No Pigeons. Nobody really cared about No Scrubs because culture war wasn’t really a thing and it wasn’t being shoved in men’s faces.

Now you’ve got Tiktok material dropping right into your feed saying you’re a manlet if you aren’t 6’+ and bringing home 250k or more, and you can see thousands of women (real or bots) agreeing with it. That will sour relations a bit.

CancerMancer ,

Sounds like you have an interesting market there. The thrift and used market where I live are dead.

CancerMancer ,

When you can’t make rent but at least you’ll have the newest iPhone in your cardboard box… how is this a win?

CancerMancer ,

I’ve got some young kids and the Steam Deck makes it a lot easier to take them places and keep myself (or them) entertained. It also means I can get some game time in while they watch their shows.

Best part was taking it in vacation, plugging it into a TV, and using it like a console we all play together. It felt like I was sitting on the floor playing N64 with my siblings again lol.

I’ve loved having this thing. I still do more gaming on my PC but I’m glad I bought it.

CancerMancer ,

The kids really like the beat em ups like the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Streets of Rage. They also like Wobbly Life and Wobbledogs (though you will probably want a mouse for that one). N+ was a hit too.

Of course I’ve got some emulated stuff too and you can’t go wrong with Super Mario World, Golden Axe, or Gauntlet Legends.

CancerMancer ,

Note that in many jurisdictions you must invoke your right of silence. Other countries often have similar laws and requirements too.

CancerMancer ,

Fuck em, send them 24h times and let them figure it out.

CancerMancer ,

The only 2021 protests where people weren’t getting their eyes shot out by pepperballs and beanbags were the ones where people were armed. Message fucking received.

CancerMancer ,

Imagine trusting a neoliberal government to take the guns away from those leftists deem dangerous. You really don’t see how that might go awry?

CancerMancer ,

Gun grabbers will say they don’t trust police and then say they’re the only ones who should be armed in the same paragraph. It’s wild.

CancerMancer ,

I didn’t think I needed to state the obvious: armed leftists are much more difficult to oppress.

CancerMancer ,

The word has been used that way for a long time though.

CancerMancer ,

Class is fundamentally different from race, culture, or some bullshit star signs, because it gives you outsized power and influence over the world around you. Combine that with the fact that people will generally act in ways that help them and the people important to them, and you can see how wealth can both corrupt people and warp the society they live in.

It’s not hard to see how rich people are generally worse people: every time they pay someone less even when they could reasonably afford more, or raise rent beyond a modest profit, they are actively contributing to the problem.

CancerMancer ,

I am definitely the wealthiest of all my friends, some of whom grew up in poverty. We help each other in many ways, often not directly involving money (or only small amounts). I am currently housing one of my friends for free so he can get new skills and get a better job.

These people are like family to me. I want them to have nice things and succeed in life, and I will do quite a bit to help them. In turn, I have people who I can trust and who will help me with damn near anything.

The truest form of wealth is the community you build up around you. Once you see that, the dollars start mattering a lot less.

JavaScript has the Node.js community in it and that just says it all really.

'Run, run, run': Chaos at a Sydney mall as 6 people stabbed to death, and the suspect fatally shot (apnews.com)

A man stabbed six people to death at a busy Sydney shopping center Saturday before he was fatally shot, police said, with hundreds fleeing the chaotic scene, many weeping as they carried their children. Eight people, including a 9-month-old, were injured....

“The government has been captured by capitalists and does their bidding.”
“Only the government should have guns.”

This has always fascinated me.

CancerMancer ,

No pretty sure most of them mean “ban guns”. I’ve seen too many “no one wants to take your guns” posts that followed with a “but…”

CancerMancer ,

The plan for me is to go full-time Linux once I’m forced to move off Win10. I already use it a lot but I’m waiting on a few holdouts.

CancerMancer ,

On the Canada/Trudeau front, you’re ultimately correct but it’s a bit worse when you examine the details:

Trudeau Liberals put together a committee to examine the options and recommend what would work best as a new electoral system. The Liberals recommended ranked voting: as the Liberals are the default first or second option for nearly everyone, this benefitted them the most. The Conservatives, New Democrats, and most independent actors favoured Mixed-Member Proportional, which is a variant of proportional representation with locally elected Members of Parliament and additional seats in the House of Commons to balance the total number of MPs and votes for each party. This system was expected to allow for more smaller parties to operate and would end the forever Liberal/Conservative control of Canada.

The Liberals put out a poll which used intentionally misleading questions and answers to try to guide responses towards ranked ballots. This effort failed due to a series of information campaigns from just about everyone with an interest in electoral reform, and ultimately the Mixed-Member Proportional system came out as the leading choice.

The Trudeau Liberals deemed the whole process and failure and completely dropped it, refusing to discuss it ever again.

White men enjoy more power and privilege on average

Talking about billionaires in one sentence and then average people in the next makes one wonder if maybe you’re conflating the power of class with race. Considering identity politics is a tool of capital used to divide us I think these are distinct issues.

CancerMancer ,

You are now blatantly assigning the power of billionaires to average white men and that’s just ridiculous. It’s like when people are so keen to point out that women were disenfranchised for so long while ignoring that the majority of men were also disenfranchised for most of that period.

CancerMancer ,

More-or-less my wife’s situation. I feel for her and try my best to support her, but she’s miserable every working day for the same reasons as you. Maybe it’s time to grab a new job as an experienced tech or even a consultant?
