Business saves money: “the goal of a business is to make money”

Employee saves money: “you just don’t want to pay all the robber barons all the way in and out of work you lazy piece of shit”

CancerMancer ,

How long until we start getting paid in scrip again?

CancerMancer ,

My director got knocked off in the middle of a call where we were trying to establish requirements with a specialist due to a Windows update. I would have laughed if these guys weren’t worth so much.

CancerMancer ,

You’re underestimating the performance gains from getting rid of the Windows overhead though. Somethings run so much better that it is kind of absurd.

CancerMancer ,

Our corporate devices are set to update and reboot automatically. This is set to happen in the evenings and usually works, but sometimes does not. I leave my device online and powered on 24/7 and still get caught by midday updates that were scheduled for 2am.

CancerMancer ,

I didn’t notice much degradation after the 2016 election enshittening. I set to work blocking all the power users and was able to to maintain the post-2016 level of quality right up until I largely quit.

There are two subs I use that have no Lemmy equivalent (one of them probably never will) but otherwise Reddit is just a marginally better StackOverflow for me now.

Also I must admit the Excel subreddit is simply too useful to quit. I’m a damn wizard at this point and these people still surprise me.

Disney is gouging customers with a near doubling of subscription costs. (sh.itjust.works)

Disney is raking its customers over the coals with a 75% price hike for their annual subscription (originally $80.) People wonder why piracy is on the rise.Multiple commenters are saying I’m off base about the 75% price increase. My payment less than a year ago was $79.99. Here’s the proof.

CancerMancer ,

I built out the whole stack: clients use jellyfin to watch media and ombi to request it (a friend uses overseerr which seems good too). Internally I’m using sonarr/radarr to manage the library, prowlarr to handle requests, sabnzbd and transmission to download stuff. Altogether this almost completely automates media request and acquisition.

It took a bit of figuring out docker, reverse proxy (using nginx proxy manager), DNS… I got it working though. Someone who has already done networking would find this much simpler but it was new to me.

It’s dangerous because I didn’t know when to stop lol. I started up some game servers for friends, wrote a borg backup script to periodically save all my configs (and game saves) to two cloud storage services, then started spooling up more services…

CancerMancer ,

I’ve been kind of rotating services. I am saving <1gb of configs, game saves, and various other small files. I used Backblaze and AWS cold storage for a bit but that seemed totally overkill, so I started trying out regular consumer stuff and it’s all the same really (for this purpose). OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox… I figured keeping local backups on a different device, and then sending two out to different cloud storage platforms was enough. I backup once a day and keep two weeks worth of backups remote, and one month local. I also manually send a biweekly backup to a friend, and I store his. That’s when I restart the server, do updates, and if I’m unlucky spend a weekend trying to fix whatever broke lol.

CancerMancer ,

I love WFH but there is no denying it has a learning curve. Those who have adopted it fastest are those who already have skill communicating remotely: IT, gamers, amateur radio, some other hobby groups. Those who are struggling are often just untrained communicators. Don’t focus on training to them to work remotely so much as focusing on how to communicate as part of a team. I would start with asking them to check in once a day around a mutually agreed time just to say whether they’re doing alright or being blocked by something. Anything that opens the door will get people talking more regularly.

CancerMancer ,

The part of the discussion you’re missing is that our governments have been sabotaging health care for decades in an attempt to bring back the political will needed to reestablish private health care. You Americans have had a similar experience with your public education: some of your governments are pushing for “education vouchers” rather than public schooling. Who is driving both of these pushes? As usual, you just need to follow the money.

CancerMancer ,

Nationalize utilities and that problem solves itself.

CancerMancer ,

Still waiting for the evidence that CERB caused the inflation and not global supply and demand issues. Considering most nations didn’t do their own version of CERB but still suffered inflation I think I’m going to be waiting forever.

CancerMancer ,

As suspected, I am going to be waiting forever.

CancerMancer ,

You know the way the funding system is designed is more-or-less destined to cause this exact effect, right? Struggling schools get less money, which leads to more struggling. The inner-city schools failing is by design.

Not The Onion: a french group has been arrested 5 years ago and are currently being judged. A picture of macron with a dick drawn on it is cited as evidence of plotting a terrorism attack (www.laquadrature.net)

To be fair they were also using encrypted messaging to talk to each other like WhatsApp and Signal, they even show their mom how to use it which is extremely suspicious....

Spend two decades grinding someone down until they finally steal something and get caught

“I fucking knew you were a criminal.”

CancerMancer ,

How dare you have such great taste on the internet? I can’t even fight you over this list.

CancerMancer ,

Iji is a free game released in 2008. Sidescrolling shooter with a story, fun boss fights, and a great soundtrack. It’s really a shame it isn’t as well known in these circles, it’s quite good.

CancerMancer ,

It’s worth noting that even the happy rats would go get the occasional hit, they just weren’t dependent on the drugs. They did it for fun once in a while, not frequently as an escape from reality. This is how healthy people enjoy drugs.

That doesn’t change the end result though. Addiction is the result of profound despair, not the cause of it. Giving people hope and support keeps them from needing to escape.

CancerMancer ,

Dunno about starting the war but there are definitely an abnormally large number of Nazis serving in Ukraine. They have a long history of that actually, and we just honored one of them in Canada’s House of Commons which was funny.

Quake 1 holds up really well!

I’ve always been familiar with Quake, but only as a multiplayer game. I’ve played a lot of arena shooters (I’m more of an Unreal Tournament fan), but for whatever reason I never got around to playing the real Quake. I didn’t really expect much considering how badly DOOM has aged, especially in terms of level design and...

CancerMancer ,

The Quake remasters are well done and I’ve been enjoying them on the Deck. I wanted to play something I already knew to get used to the gyro aiming and the remasters came out shortly after I bought it. Perfect timing.

The games have aged surprisingly well. I don’t think you give Doom 1/2 enough credit but I’ll be the first to admit I liked Heretic more. Hexen on the other hand has aged poorly but when modded it is fun.

CancerMancer ,

RotT has really fun weapons and a banging soundtrack, I can see how that would be the defining FPS of the time for some people. I think my favourite FPS of the 90’s was Blood, they nailed the atmosphere in that game.

CancerMancer ,

The Kimberley certification process for diamonds has been entirely co-opted and no longer serves the purpose of ensuring you are not buying blood diamonds. All the NGOs that matter have already walked away considering it a lost cause.

If you buy natural diamonds, there is a good chance you are supporting criminal enterprise and warlords.

CancerMancer ,

ah yes, some of that post-humor “comedy”

CancerMancer ,

BC2 was so damn good holy shit. My guys have war stories from that game lol

CancerMancer ,

Freelancer. Exploring through the jump holes and all the beautiful systems in-game was very satisfying. Nothing else has really hit the spot.

CancerMancer ,

I urge everyone to install Adnauseum. You know what’s better than trying to starve advertisers of info? Filling their ad profile for you with total garbage.

CancerMancer ,

Canada takes native children from their families

Horrific crime.

Russia takes native children from their families

Unbelievably based.

This is your mind on Hexbear.

(Because I know someone is going to misread this: they’re both wrong)

I hate how everything requires you to download a shitty proprietary data harvesting app nowadays when everything can be done just fine without an app.

I have recently started a new position and am required to use an app that has three Facebook trackers, one of them being a Facebook location tracker according to Exodus App Privacy in order to get your food when it would literally work perfectly fine ordering to a real cashier or shit even a website rather than having to...

CancerMancer ,

Just put my oldest child in school this year and I had to download FOUR apps. Four fucking apps. Why? This could have been a Progressive Web App and a push notification service. There is no need for this.

CancerMancer ,

White supremacists in the US think communism is when you pay taxes, some posts on Lemmy aren’t going to change anything.

CancerMancer ,

“white supremacists here in the US” are explicitly mentioned in the comment

CancerMancer ,

My wife and kids found Jellyfin easier to use because it more closely resembles Netflix. Your mileage may vary but I get it, and it’s why I even use a media server over just plugging in a laptop with Kodi.

Sometimes the best solution is whatever you can get the users to actually use.

CancerMancer ,

That’s me lol. I’m still sitting on my spool of Cat6 I bought a few years ago. At pre-COVID prices it was approximately (CAD) $1 per termination, and $1 per 6 feet of cable.

Today at Infinite Cables and other Canadian stores I can buy premade lengths at almost those costs, shockingly. Prices really came down.

CancerMancer ,

The difference in cost for 1000ft spools is <$50 CAD, and you get a product you know always works, is less brittle, can do PoE without becoming a fireball, can be used in commercial installation legally, and is actually in spec. I mean a lot of people who are actually running cables already have separate spools for solid and stranded, plenum and riser, maybe even shielded/burial… no need to add CCA to the mix with all of its downsides (and potentially make that mistake…)

CancerMancer ,

How much of that is in your control to diagnose, let alone fix? If the neighbours are out too, that means it’s already out of your hands.

When it comes to “the internet is down”, much of the time it is something within your control, whether or not you know that. It’s not a very good analogy imo.

CancerMancer ,

When even the capitalists can see that rentseeking is bad for the economy, I’m not sure why we have to fight over it all the time. Classic case of zealots not reading their own literature I guess.

CancerMancer ,

A monopoly is not necessary, just enough influence to affect policy. The biggest landlords are some of the most abusive and manipulative, and engage in much lobbying. Their collusion is part of why housing costs so much, and the government refusing to investigate it is due to their lobbying. Literal rentseeking lol, but yes I’m aware the word isn’t usually so straightforward.

I like this definition:

Rentseeking is an economic concept that occurs when an entity seeks to gain added wealth without any reciprocal contribution of productivity.

CancerMancer ,

-Are average Americans “capitalists” because they sell their labour for money in a market economy?
-Is China a socialist nation?
-Were the National Socialists actual socialists?

If your answer to any of the above was “yes” you need to take a step back and ask yourself some questions, namely:

-What is a capitalist?
-What makes a nation socialist?
-What is authoritarianism, and is it distinct from socialism?

CancerMancer ,

By definition, socialism is social ownership of the means of production. Social ownership can be public, community, collective, cooperative, or employee, depending on which brand of socialism you are interacting with.

I don’t see “totalitarian dictatorship” as a form of social ownership and I imagine most people alive wouldn’t either.

CancerMancer ,

I’ve never seen it before either. Maybe I’m just not online or rightoid enough to know.

CancerMancer ,

Yeah you nailed it, leftists use the term “liberal” in its classic context, as you have described. Tankies tend to use it as a pejorative while other leftists usually use it descriptively, and are more likely to use “neoliberal” pejoratively instead. This does depend on which community you’re browsing though.

From a leftist perspective, it’s equivalent to stating that the only way to end gun violence is more guns

Just want to note that Marx said the working class must be armed, and there are many leftists who agree. Gun control is not a left position, it is an authoritarian one. Important distinction imo.

CancerMancer ,

Go to any place gamers chat and you will see people hating each other over specific games or genres far more than talking about the politics hovering over gaming. Internal fighting is always going to be loudest when there is not any major external work to be done.

CancerMancer ,

I just want guns for all and less immigration

Elect this person.

CancerMancer ,

lol yep that was a tankie-take if I’ve ever seen one.

CancerMancer ,

Big agree, welfare wouldn’t cost nearly as much if people actually got their fair share of the pie.

CancerMancer ,

The lesson here is not that you personally have the power to do this, but that it’s possible at all. Many communities have something or someone they don’t like collectively, but individually they will make peace. A person is smart, people are dumb.

CancerMancer ,

The number of A’s is just an indication of how many apologies you will get when the game inevitably sucks because it’s undercooked. At least indie devs put the Early Access tag on to warn you it’s raw, big devs aren’t even polite enough to warn you (but will gladly take your money)

CancerMancer ,

If I didn’t have little ones I would have waited. I don’t get to use my tv any more. :p

lol same reason I got a Steam Deck. Bought the cheapest one, dropped a 1TB SSD in, and been having a blast. I have no regrets.

Steam Input is NUTS. Have you checked out all the stuff you can do with the touchpads yet? I got tired of having to tap shoulder buttons to swap items/weapons so I set up the left touchpad to be a radial menu that sends keyboard commands to switch to specific gear in Dinkum / Stardew Valley. It’s flawless and in 2023 that feels weird to say about any device or UI.

Also gyro aiming is so damn good holy shit.

CancerMancer ,

SplatterCat, AlphaBetaGamer, MandaloreGaming… any other good YouTubers for game discovery? Also RIP TotalBiscuit, he was the best of them all.
