Biggest thing I did to go from feeling like shit to actually feeling engaged was getting involved with my union. Life is so much more satisfying when you do something that matters, and when the existing union leadership who have been largely useless described me as “trouble” I felt validated lol.

Even if your union is running well they pretty much can always use an extra set of hands, so step up!

Hillary Clinton is an avid follower of the Iron Law of Institutions

CancerMancer ,

I saw Trump coming. He did something no one else was doing at the time: acknowledge just how miserable life was for many Americans at the time. Other politicians have been content to pretend everything is great save for their pet policy projects, Trump said it’s all bad. In a post-COVID world this would be more effective save for his own history of failure and inaction, but people often have short memories and they will forget quickly if they get angry about something else.

Last thing anyone needs is the narcissist Hillary Clinton inserting herself where she doesn’t belong. I imagine voting enthusiasm will already be low because the choice between a failed conman and Weekend at Biden’s isn’t particularly enticing, so maybe Hillary can just fuck off for a bit and not make it worse.

CancerMancer ,

Try not seating a neoliberal as the candidate then, maybe you can get some leftists to go vote. The fact that so many people were assaulting the “Bernie Bros” proved to me that people like you are not leftists, you’re just rainbow neolibs.

CancerMancer ,

Thanks for the point about the forums. I get why people use Discord: the things it is designed for it does reasonably well. The problem is people using it in ways it isn’t made for, like forums or wikis. If your documentation, issue tracking, or patch notes are done via Discord, please stop for fuck’s sake. There are much better options for this and you can even webhook them into Discord if you insist on it, but stop using Discord to replace forums.

CancerMancer ,

A few open-source projects I follow use it as their main community tool and it sucks.

I don’t mind my friend groups using it because it’s just for ephemeral chats and gaming anyway, but I want to know why these other communities think it’s appropriate.

CancerMancer ,

What is up with WhatsApp all over the place? It’s a demonstrably inferior experience to damn near any alternative at this point.

CancerMancer ,

Needs a license for larger concurrent user counts, which is probably why it fell off in favour of Mumble and then Discord.

CancerMancer ,

“RTFM” but the manual has been out of date for years? Hell yeah keep it old school.

CancerMancer ,

Plenty of women in shooting sports. Turns out shooting is one of those sports where men don’t seem to have a significant biological advantage. None of them complain about abuse.

CancerMancer ,

I don’t follow NBA but I do casually watch some hockey (including women’s hockey) and I’d be surprised if even the very best women’s hockey players could beat a team made up of lower ranked NHL players. The men will have better puck handling, higher speed, more weight, and they shoot more often opening up more plays.

My anecdotal sports experience, for what that’s worth: when I was 14-15 playing soccer, women’s university teams would play against us for training. The women were taller than us on average, ran a bit faster, used more vocal communication, and were much more physically aggressive. The men had better endurance, ball-handling, and positioning. We never lost, and no one seemed surprised by this.

It’s not just the obvious height and weight advantages at play, and I’m not sure how much socialization matters but I’d wager less than our biology in sports and other extreme athletic endeavours.

CancerMancer ,

Watching junior/college sports is enlightening because you can forget actual pro players, there is a small army of NHL hopefuls who could outplay the best pro women’s team.

Honestly I would appreciate if they banned phone manufacturers from forcing Facebook, X, and other bullshit onto your phone. Making people go out and get it is one of the many intended barriers.

CancerMancer ,

The majority of people don’t understand the harms of social media even while living through them. That said social media is the majority of the problem, so just give us the ability to lock it down for our kids and that would work for me. Plenty of other good uses for smartphones.

CancerMancer ,

“What could the overwhelmingly technically skilled audience of Lemmy possibly know about electronics repair and embedded programming?”

Huh I wonder where the downvotes are coming.

CancerMancer , (edited )

How do you know the manufacturer-supplied module is doing the work it’s supposed to without being able to verify it yourself? Boeing aircraft are having similar problems; if an industry that regulated is having issues, what is going to stop vehicle manufacturers from doing the same?

Give us the diagnostic tools and the parts. Operating with zero trust and verifying everything before and after install is the only way to be sure.

CancerMancer ,

I would also add predatory male feminist, hypocrite, shitlib, pedo.

There really is just no redeeming quality to the guy.

CancerMancer ,

There are plenty of leftists who aren’t pieces of shit that we could support instead of this clown. I don’t know why people keep giving this guy a platform.

CancerMancer ,

I think they just went back to Reddit or defederated. I generally like speaking with people with opposing views (which is how my Discord server ended up being half filled with conservatives lol), but tankies and idpol warriors just will not even engage with you; they just talk past you at some invisible man they think pulls your strings, “you’re all Russian bots” and the like.

CancerMancer ,

This is a by-the-book and extremely predictable case of Embrace, Extend, Extinguish.

CancerMancer ,

Will Meta embrace-extend-extinguish the ActivityPub protocol? There are comparisons to be made between Meta adopting ActivityPub for its new social media platform and Meta adopting XMPP for its Messenger service a decade ago. There was a time when users of Facebook and users of Google Talk were able to chat with each other and with people from self-hosted XMPP servers, before each platform was locked down into the silos we know today. What would stop that from repeating? Well, even if Threads abandoned ActivityPub down the line, where we would end up is exactly where we are now. XMPP did not exist on its own outside of nerd circles, while ActivityPub enjoys the support and brand recognition of Mastodon.

That is a stunning display of naïveté.

CancerMancer ,

Unfortunately some people do not want to acknowledge that our large businesses are downright evil. For those who doubt this, consider the pharmaceutical companies that raised insulin prices up to hundreds of dollars a month. They did not give a single shit that people would die, so long as they increased profit from their captive audience. If big business doesn’t even care whether you live or die, why would they care about the much smaller stakes involved in the federated ActivityPub space?

CancerMancer ,

Besides the text of the article, there is the issue that environmentalist fear-mongering about nuclear energy caused extreme hesitance to build a new plant and that has lead directly to greenhouse gas emissions increases.

Indeed, we are not immune to propaganda.

CancerMancer ,

Oh my favourite are the environmentalists pushing for EVs as if replacing an existing car with an EV is somehow greener. It’s good to push new sales to EVs but it’s bad to get people to drop still functioning cars for an EV. Then there is the power grid issue which is going to be a minor social and economic disaster at this point because seemingly no one is ready for it.

Before some knob assumes anything this is not a pro-ICE comment and I actually own an EV, this is someone urging society to think actions through before committing to them. A lot of unintended consequences have come of the various steps done to push EVs.

Ideally we work to remove the need to own a vehicle in the first place.

CancerMancer ,

“the market will solve this problem” but woke?

CancerMancer ,

Most radioactive waste is just mildly contaminated and has a relatively short danger period in the realm of a century or less. The truly dangerous stuff represents the smallest amount of waste and that’s the crap people have been trying to put very deep underground for decades. For whatever reason the political will just hasn’t been there. For now it rests on-site in casks designed to keep it safely stored for a very long time, but it will eventually need a permanent home.

CancerMancer ,

People are afraid of radiation because you can’t see or smell or hear it. Which is probably a good thing considering you are surrounded by it all the time.

People: “I’m going to enjoy this sunny day with my shirt off and no sunscreen”

Same people: “I don’t want a nuclear plant anywhere in my country.”

Also fun are the 5G haters who don’t realize that 5G is being delivered over 3.4 ghz to 4.2 ghz but they’re ok with the wireless home phones doing 2.4ghz. Also fun fact for those who don’t know but you can actually destroy cellular tissue with ultrasound if the amplitude is high enough. Of course the range for this is very short and ultrasonic imagers don’t have the power to do this but ultimately this can be summarized as “everything is dangerous if you use enough of it” which just seems obvious and shouldn’t need to be mentioned.

CancerMancer ,

Sweden and Canada have pretty high rates of gun ownership and don’t have this problem. That said American school shootings are not as common as they are made out to be, there has been a lot of statistical fudging to make it look so much worse than it is.

What all three countries do have are problems with gangs and they’re only getting worse as poverty drives people to crime. America has it worse because it has more poverty, but we will all catch up soon enough.

CancerMancer ,

Audiophile equipment is just magic crystal bullshit for pseudointellectuals.

CancerMancer , (edited )

Stopping the rise of the far right is trivially easy, and government holds the levers. Just do two things:

  1. reduce immigration
  2. tax the wealthy

Seems they would rather lose to nazis than do those two things.

Edit: seems more than a few of you are rushing to lose to Nazis too

CancerMancer ,

Wikipedia information is often made up of media reports and paid studies so we’re already there.

CancerMancer ,

Imagine it’s post-2001 and George Bush is saying we need to take away Iraq’s Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMDs). You hear there is a controversy around this topic, so you look it up on Wikipedia. The Wikipedia article may not even mention the controversy because it came from “fringe sources” or unreliable media, instead its rules mean they only share the message from approved media sources, and that means the article says Iraq definitely has WMDs and something must be done.

This is how it works now, and always had.

When I was in college in the second half of the 2000s, we were banned from using Wikipedia as a source due to the way it is built. Many complained but given how many controversies Wikipedia has found itself involved in which includes paid editors, state actors, only being able to use biased journalistic coverage to construct articles, refusing to use other media sources such as established bloggers…

Trusting Wikipedia at any point was the mistake. It’s not even the Wikimedia foundation that is the issue, it’s the structure of the site. If no approved journalists will speak the truth, your article will be nothing but lies and Wikipedia editors will dutifully write those lies down and lock down the article if you attempt to correct them using sources they personally dislike.

CancerMancer ,

Many of the editors are themselves neoliberal American cultural imperialists and proud of it. The issue isn’t direct control so much as an army of useful idiots.

CancerMancer ,

I suspect you mean Conservapedia. It is exactly what it sounds like: a shitty right-wing rag.

On the flipside is RationalWiki, which is basically neoliberal Americentric “reality has a liberal bias” made manifest. It’s also pretty shit.

CancerMancer ,

Years back I was waiting at a bus hub after I had just got through one of the most grueling days of my life and I looked the way I felt. A woman asks me for directions and it turns out she is on the same bus, so she starts to chat. She was a university-educated beauty while I was looking my worst, just trying to keep myself fed while I wrapped up some missed high school credits before doing an adult-ed course.

I don’t think I’ve ever been more suspicious of someone in my life, but after chatting for over half an hour she seemed quite intelligent and genuine, and I decided to ask for her info before we split up.

Called her to set up a date and she got a little hung up on the word “date”, using anything but that. Thought maybe she was just being a little non-committal at first, not necessarily scary. We meet up and grab a quick coffee, then she asks me to come with her because she has a night planned out. Fuck yeah, right?

It was a fucking youth group and she damn near tried to drag me in. I walked home, fuck that.

CancerMancer ,

I hadn’t even considered there might be substantial cultural differences in the use of the term but yes, you’ve described it accurately.

CancerMancer ,

It being a honeypot was my concern. I don’t think they were an actual cult but I don’t appreciate being dragged into someone’s belief system, much less one I intentionally left behind.

CancerMancer ,

The bus trip home from the nearest transit route can take up to half an hour for me due to how often it comes and its path. The drive from the transit stop is 3 minutes.

Not that it matters, I still wouldn’t be able to get to the nearest grocery store on the bus, inexplicably none of them go there. These systems need work.

CancerMancer ,

Ah yes, the all-or-nothing approach, typical anglosphere reaction to a problem.

Canada does this shit too, it is infuriating.

CancerMancer ,

why the hell would you root a device supplied to you by your employer? It’s not yours.

CancerMancer ,

I chose Apple for my work phone for only one reason: battery life. It is a wildly inferior experience for anyone who wants or needs more than just a phone. The way I have to send photos and documents through other services just to get them to my computer, the utter lack of control of the phone’s file system, no sideloading…

If for any reason what you need can’t or won’t work through the Apple ecosystem, iPhones go from feeling pretty smooth to being an obstacle, and I’m not paying $1000+ for an obstacle.

CancerMancer ,

Just like when google silently removed their slogan “don’t be evil”.

They didn’t just remove it, they changed it to “do good”. I’m not sure what that means to Google but it sort of looks like “implement the neoliberal cyberpunk hellscape no one asked for”

CancerMancer ,

You don’t care that a mainboard replacement will cost you $1100+ but a component-level repair is less than half of that and doesn’t e-waste a whole damn board? You don’t care that it would cost even less if Apple just sold the damn parts and supplied schematics?

CancerMancer ,

Also in more than a decade I didn’t have to replace anything

Honestly I doubt that. I’ve seen many Macbook failures in my time and they are always things other laptops don’t suffer. I purchase and track IT software and hardware for an organization of over 10k people and I’ve seen what lasts and what doesn’t. The regular laptops we use? We get 4 years out of nearly all of them, and 6 if we replace the batteries and upgrade any dated bits. There are the odd designs that failed early (HP Elitebooks from a few years ago…) but most are reliable.

There are two devices I avoid buying at all costs and make clients give me a lot of supporting rationale for, because they have poor build quality and are utterly unrepairable: Microsoft Surface, and Apple Macbooks. At scale, running these is incredibly expensive for no good reason.

Example of an issue that has happened: client was running a bunch of VMs and filled up the SSD on their Dell laptop. I replaced it with a larger SSD rather than buy an entire device. That happens on a Mac? Tough because that SSD is soldered in. On that note, good luck extracting that data if the mainboard fails. That was fun telling someone they lost a mountain of data.

CancerMancer ,

You ever heard of Miracle Mineral Solution? It’s bleach with extra steps and some of the 5G loonies give their autistic kids enemas with it to drive out the “toxins” giving their kids autism.

Sanders warns Biden: address working-class fears or risk losing to demogogue (www.theguardian.com)

In an interview with the Guardian from his home base in Burlington, Vermont, Sanders urged the Democratic president to inject more urgency into his bid for re-election. He said that unless the president was more direct in recognising the many crises faced by working-class families his Republican rival would win....

CancerMancer ,

Sanders not burning his own party cost him much of his clout. Frankly they deserved it for what they did to him and his show of weakness backing the warhawk Clinton was awful to see from someone who usually has so much fire.

CancerMancer ,

Containerization really is cool. The problem is that once you start you will get increasingly angry about all the game servers that just will not run that way, like Conan Exiles and Astroneer.
