Wasps usually kill other bugs. So you might end up with more of the biting bugs without them.

Berttheduck ,

Snap I’m really enjoying this season. Hopefully they can stick the ending.

What is the point of nicotine patches?

I don’t get it. It’s kinda like you got to want to quit but at the same time yeah quitting is already hard for me. But I’m supposed to put it on me and somehow I get a form of nicotine without smoking. It’s like how am I supposed to get used to it. I will even take the patch off try to save it for later just so I can...

Berttheduck ,

They are really useful if you’re in hospital and too unwell to go out for a cigarette.

Berttheduck ,

Yup, several times. The joys of working in healthcare.

Berttheduck ,

Do you have a game of choice? I’ve just finished running a Dresden files accelerated game which was a lot of fun.

Berttheduck ,

I’m working my way through forbidden west as well. I’m really enjoying it. It’s always good to spend more time in an interesting game world. I really appreciate the more free form climbing system in this one, not quite breath of the wild climbing but way better than grab the yellow ledges only.

Berttheduck ,

I wanted to love Quantum Break so much but it was just a buggy mess on my pc, I spent hours messing with settings but it just wouldn’t run smoothly. I still managed to push through to mission 4 or so. Maybe I’ll give it another go.

Berttheduck ,

I love hearing about DF but it’s so dense that I was never able to get into it myself. Plus I struggled with the art, or lack of it on the earlier builds.

Berttheduck ,

Me too, I’ve binged it twice (takes a good few weeks each time). Haven’t been able to get into the sequel nearly as much though.

Berttheduck ,

I can second all of these. Generation zero is the only one I didn’t enjoy much but I suspect it’s a lot better with friends.

The rest are fab, I’m currently playing Kena it’s like Pixar/ Disney meets dark souls. Beautiful game, has these little critters which follow you around called rot who are super cute and you can put hats on them.

Control is just excellent. The combat feels great and for me the whole game was worth playing just for the Ashtray maze sequence.

Berttheduck ,

My wife was playing Ori around its release, we both got stuck on the first tree escape, where it floods. Absolutely massive difficulty spike for a relatively chill game to that point. Beautiful game though and I love the sound track.

Berttheduck ,

That’s brutal.

Berttheduck ,

I love the STALKER games, the atmosphere is absolutely top notch. The section where you have to go into the lair of the invisible dudes was terrifying. I remember meeting my first one, before going into the tunnels, and losing half my health in its first attack, I fought it standing on top of a tractor because they couldn’t climb thankfully.

Berttheduck ,

We really need a big push into bacteriophage research I think. Get the bugs all killing each other so we can keep our antibiotics for emergencies.

The Wii brought gaming to the general public in a way nothing else had. Like most modern Nintendo consoles it was under powered and gimmicky but the gimmick worked so well for people new to gaming, point at the TV or wiggle the controller as you would to do the thing in real life was a huge step to making an abstract concept make sense to people. For longer gaming sessions or more “serious” games the Wii controls were generally lacking but damn if Wii sports wasn’t good fun.

Do you practice self care?

Hello. Let’s talk about self-care. Who practices self-care regularly? I’ve been making an absolute effort to practice self-care, and it’s definitely improving my mood. I floss, meditate, do qigong, breathwork, etc. Yes, flossing is self-care, take care of yo teefs. What does everyone do for self-care? Bonus question: Where...

Berttheduck ,

Yup, I make a conscious effort to look after myself more now since I burned out from work a while back. I cycle to and from work, journal regularly (I started with Mind Journal and follow that format), walk my dog (and having a dog in general is great for self care). I make time to spend with friends and try to be present in the moment and enjoy the little things. I also make sure I go home on time from work, take my holidays and don’t take on more than I can manage.

Swallowing problems can be serious, you should see a doctor urgently.

Berttheduck ,

I love how many dicks have been drawn in historical artifacts by the people who built them. I remember reading about an engraving at the very top of an old column which the building was too unstable to get close enough to see for a long time. I think when they got up there and translated it it said something like “this is very high”. It’s nice to know people have always been people.

Berttheduck ,

I love in Pompeii you can follow the dicks on the cobbles to the brothel, brilliant advertising.

Berttheduck ,

Check out Furi.

It’s a flashy boss rush style game. A bit bullet hell a bit brawler. Might scratch that itch for you.

You could also try Sifu, it’s got really slick skill based combat and interesting bosses.

Berttheduck ,

On this sort of line maybe Metal Gear Rising Revengence could be worth a look.

Berttheduck ,

Not sure it fits as it’s souls with guns, so missing the spectacle fighter element, but it’s definitely worth a look. They are both excellent games. I love the core loop they’ve got, the shooting feels excellent.

Berttheduck ,

I adore the walking dead games, they totally spoiled the TV show for me as the characters were soo much better. Lee and Clem at the end of the first game was such an emotional gut punch, one of the few times a game made me cry.

Berttheduck ,

Very much not. It’s a big open world with lots of exploring. But of the symbols everywhere type of map. There’s a few boss fights but they are generally pretty fun. I can solidly recommend the first game. I haven’t played the second yet.

Berttheduck ,

So satisfying taking out a whole herd of the deer things with 5 or 6 shots to the exploding tanks on their backs.

Berttheduck ,

Making friends as an adult is still hard even without depression. It is easier to be in touch with existing friends when not depressed though.

Traffic lights tend to leave me with feelings of frustration if anything.

I don’t have existential dread in the mornings just the usual “joy” of having to go to work.

Berttheduck ,

It’s so simple but genuinely words to live by.

Berttheduck ,

Thirding this. Excellent book. Jazz hands!

Berttheduck ,

We’ve done these as well our house is concrete so it’s really difficult to drill holes into so the rails make life much easier for rearranging art work.

Berttheduck ,

I love my bone conduction headphones. I love listening to podcasts and books whilst communicating. Agree with them getting drowned out by traffic sometimes though I guess that’s sort of the idea.

Berttheduck ,

I love the Dead space remake. I’ve nearly finished it. It’s how I remember the original looking and how I hoped it would play. I love that they added the full zero g movement from the later games and they fixed the asteroid shooting section. It’s actually fun now! The regenerator is still as much of a bastard as I remember too. It’s a brilliant remake of one of my favourite games.

Berttheduck ,

Of course he’s a silent protagonist in 1 isn’t he! I’d totally forgotten that.

Berttheduck ,

I’m not sure I’m getting the big picture on this, they are on strike because the government wants to train more doctors? Surely that’s a good thing?

Berttheduck ,

That makes a lot more sense. Thank you.

Berttheduck ,

Never going to happen without time travel but I’d love to have seen Queen with Freddie live. That man had some serious stage presence.

Berttheduck ,

This is great. I think every kid wants a digger.

Berttheduck ,

When I built my new pc my wife inherited my old one which fortunately is still good enough to play most games (not well but they run), so we now have a two desk set up for co-op games, it’s great.

Berttheduck ,

Metal gear 3 is my favourite, it’s got the best combination of gameplay and story of them all. Probably the best boss fights of the series, so many good ones, I love the end and the fear. Fighting Volgen was great as a fight and he was a brilliant villain. The Boss was possibly the best bit, really escalated the game. 2 and 4 are both great. 4 felt like a good close to the series, though it had far too many cutscenes, I think it was more of a movie than a game. 5 was the best gameplay in the series by far though the story was unfinished and Quiet was silly, “You’ll feel bad when you learn why she’s practically naked”. Bullshit just admit you want a sexy lady in your game that’s still allowed.

Berttheduck ,

I found out I was diabetic and had damage to my eyes. So I switched to a diabetic diet overnight and lost 12kg in a couple months. Kept it off too, gained a little back over Christmas (because Christmas is all about the food for me) but lost it by end of January again.

No sugar unless it’s fruit, very controlled carbs portions and all wholemeal/ brown varieties. Some days no carbs only vegetables. I’ve not eaten potatoes since October. Snacks are nuts or fruit, deserts are yogurt and fruit with some dark chocolate every now and then to help with the sugar cravings. It’s not easy but I really want to keep my feet and eyes.

Does anyone know any Hard Sci Fi books about humans surviving without any hospitable worlds?

I’m looking to get inspiration for my own writing. I need a hard sci fi series where earth (and earthlike worlds) are too rare, inaccessible, and/or previously spoiled beyond ability to sustain life. Bonus points if it is set on a multi-generational space station or starship without any other options and goes into detail about...

Berttheduck ,

Doesn’t quite fit the bill as there’s a planet eventually but Children of Time by Tchaikovsky is excellent and half the book follows a generation ship. The other half follows a successive evolution of uplifted spiders. It’s reasonably hard sci-fi not Martian levels of detail about the science but very well written and enjoyable. Could be worth a go for some inspiration.

Berttheduck ,

It does a really good job of making you empathize with giant spiders. I can also recommend the audio book, very well done.

Berttheduck ,

Thanks for this recommendation, 1440 seems like the exact thing I’ve been looking for.

Berttheduck ,

Just the 1 for me. I’ve got a Simba memory foam cube pillow. It’s expensive at £100 (ish) but easily the best thing I’ve ever slept on. Like sinking into a perfectly supportive cloud. They have an inner bag filled with loads of 1cm memory foam cubes and a good outer case so you don’t feel individual cubes. Super comfy.

Berttheduck ,

Highly recommend a long way to a small angry planet by Becky Chambers. Sci-fi book, lovely atmosphere, very cosy. Highly recommend the whole series.
