Underlegislation leads to a bloated, extortionate upper crust that weilds disproportionate power over those who rely on said financial system. There is a balance, and the problem you outline is the lesser of the two extremes.

Sci Fi is a flavor of fantasy that favors grounded explainations over magic, yet can’t escape it entirely. In order for something to be sci fi, it must have something in it that can be percieved as “magical,” even in the “sufficiently advanced technology” sense of the word. Jump/warp tech, laser weapons, space warfare in general, most life support concepts, AGI… All magic as far as we know now. Any sci fi without the roots of fantasy is really just modern fiction.

Protection from grit. And because polymers that can resist balistic shock and heat had only very recently been invented by then, and it was “cool” to find a way to make it useful.

That’s a smoke screen. Another is the “liberal brainwashing machine” school system scare. What they fear is the statistic that higher educated individuals trend towards populism and progressivism. They see higher education of youths as a threat to their political base, which turns into “spineless parents sending kids to liberul brainwashing camps funded by the gubmnt.”

Not to mention that if he is off of any 1 ballot and loses, he has ammunition for another Jan6. If he has a “fair shot” and loses, there is less plausibility and (hopefully) fewer followers in the repeat.

Question: We’ve seen sand-filled missiles due to corruption and cronyism, and they were actually transfered to the front line expecting to be live munitions. How many Russian ICBMs do you think are truly functional between the “new” ones and the 70yo cold war hulks?

To be clear, I don’t revel in the idea of a war between the Ruskies and NATO, but Putin is certain to be wondering this, too. How effective are his strategic assets, truly? I’m sure the CIA has figured that out and is guiding US response on that intel. They know exactly how far an insecure dictator can be pushed.

Does anyone know any Hard Sci Fi books about humans surviving without any hospitable worlds?

I’m looking to get inspiration for my own writing. I need a hard sci fi series where earth (and earthlike worlds) are too rare, inaccessible, and/or previously spoiled beyond ability to sustain life. Bonus points if it is set on a multi-generational space station or starship without any other options and goes into detail about...

GlitchyDigiBun ,
@GlitchyDigiBun@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

It’s guardians of the galaxy, my guy. It’s character quips spaced by mindless qte’s and hack/slash combat in linear, beautifully-designed environments. It’s got a story, and if you turn off your brain into “super hero movie” mode, you’ll enjoy it. Hardly unique or novel though. Prolly a fun romp.

GlitchyDigiBun ,
@GlitchyDigiBun@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

It’s entirely subjective, like wine tasting. Sweetness in such a bitter drink is more about what flavor notes exist that your brain associates with sweetness. Apple spice coffee, cinnamon, nutmeg, and certain floral notes like vanilla will pull “sweet-adjacent” associations in your mind that form a melody with the taste and smell.

Yet language and abstraction are the core of intelligence. You cannot have intelligence without 2 way communication, and if anything, your brain contains exactly that dictionary you describe. Ask any verbal autistic person, and 90% of their conversations are scripted to a fault. However, there’s another component to intelligence that the Turing Test just scrapes against. I’m not philosophical enough to identify it, but it seems like the turing test is looking for lightning by listening for rumbling that might mean thunder.

Not to mention they fly at altitudes that make it far more likely that you hear your little clay bunker next door get fragged before you hear the gunship. The zoom on those guns make them essentially crew-served howitzer sniper rifles.

I’ve had the notion of producing some SDXL images of jesus doing hateful things that Christians do, like holding up a “god hates f*gs” sign or roaring and frothing at a trump rally. Make them see what “Christ through them” looks like. Put it on billboards and shit.

GlitchyDigiBun ,
@GlitchyDigiBun@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

It’s ome thing to abstract it and another entirely to be staring at a billboard where your god is shown to be as vile and hate-fuelled as you are. Make them get angry about it, and point out at every enfuriated comment that they’re only proving the point.

Gmap data is dated around sensitive sites and they have to request DoD clearance to update that type of sat imagery, and even then objects can be blurred or even photoshopped by the DoD before google is allowed to post the update, and by then any intel even unedited is OBE. It makes sense that a country would want their own, up-to-date system.

That was the point. In the books, the bugs had been flinging rocks towards the outer colonies for years, but the attack on Buenos Aires is heavily implied to be an inside job to rally support for an invasion, since they did not have hyperspace tech and no attack had reached the inner worlds, let alone Earth.

It makes sense if you’re in an industry with hotspot flare-ups. I work MSP IT and those morning meeting are the way my team asks for help on pressing issues, or rings the alarm bells on business impacting outages. Additionally, Tier I helpdesk and Tier III projects never communicate, so the SUM is where T1 hears about where projects are at (in case they get the breakfix for that item) and T3 knows how swamped T1 is and what mobile techs are out, and T2 gets a chance to tell us if the flow from T1 and T3 into the “escalation sandwich” is too much. And we genuinely have it down pat to 5-10min.

Don’t get me wrong, I’ve had shitty SUM requirements, but when they’re done right, it’s better than a state of the union email/Teams message.

Is the purpose of life to be happy?

When I’m unhappy, I feel like I’m doing life wrong. I’d rather be happy. But is happiness the point of life, or is there more to it? If I pursue happiness, mine first then for those around me, is that selfish? But if there’s a bigger purpose, then what about people with Alzheimer’s or dementia who can’t recall recent...

The purpose of life (imo) is to discover humanity in yourself and what “the best human” means to you. People get their ideas on “the best human” from many inspired examples. The Buddha, Mohammed the Prophet, Jesus of Nazareth, Julius Caesar, or Jimmy Buffet. Some people need no such idols and can form their own understanding of what it means to be human, but all of these scale.

Your humanity plays into the identity of your family, plays into the identity of your city/town, plays into the identity of your region, plays into the identity of your nation, and at the top is the true meaning of life: the culmination of every dream and desire, the moral fabric of our species, and the embodiment of the only such entity in existence to our knowledge. The purpose of life is to find that, reconcile with it, and use the wisdom you gain in doing so to help shape our species into a happy, healthy, and mature civilization, or die trying.
