Is there any significance to people using emojis that match their skin tone?

I’m asking because as a light-skinned male, I always use the standard Simpsons yellow. I don’t really see other light-skinned people using an emoji that matches their skin tone, but often do see people of color use them. Maybe white people don’t naturally realize a need to be explicit with emoji skin-tone or perhaps it’s...

No WinRAR?

Oh yeah. I forget it’s not free after using it for almost 3 decades without paying for it…

Mandela effect?

AlphaOmega ,

It’s a common Mandela Effect. Interview with A vampire instead of interview with THE vampire.

Read the book 6 times plus, saw original movie a few times and wrote a book report on it. For me it’s always been interview with A vampire

What is it about the text messages and emails sent by older people that make me feel like I'm having a stroke?

Maybe they're used to various shortcuts in their writing that they picked up before autocorrect became common, but these habits are too idiosyncratic for autocorrect to handle properly. However, that doesn't explain the emails I've had to decipher that were typed on desktop keyboards. Has anyone else younger than 45 or so felt similarly frustrated with geriatrics' messages?

@asklemmy

AlphaOmega ,

All the younger people I text with use more acronyms and abbreviations than I do. I even spell out okay.

AlphaOmega ,

Also 20 plus years. This will fix a ton of boot issues.

New? There’s a hidden file on xp that records all your emails and web browsing.

The only new part is it’s now AI driven?

Same. First program I built was a bouncing circle, took 15 minutes to code and an hour to save to the cassette.

Can we all agree that whatever version of predictive text we have nowadays is crap, and has been for a long time?

I’m sick of random capitalisations mid sentence. I’m sick of common words being replaced by less common ones or even downright nonsense. I’m sick of it taking three attempts to successfully get the word I want. I swear it’s been like this for five years or more. Can we have a better version yet, or at least the old one...

AlphaOmega ,

That’s my biggest pet peeve, when it auto suggests words that don’t exist.

Sugar is roughly as addictive as cocaine.

healthline.com/…/experts-is-sugar-addictive-drug

So yeah, addiction is probably the end game.

“Eating too much sugar can lead to weight gain, which then increases the risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke and some cancers. But sugar also alters our mood and provides feelings of being rewarded and euphoria; hence the comparison to illegal drugs.” www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&opi=8997…

Yeah it should be regulated as a highly addictive substance. It shouldn’t be in baby formula.

I don’t know what you mean by “addictive as anything else”. We are talking about the relationship to how your brain reacts to these substances, using science. Based on that there’s only a handful of highly addictive substances out of millions of potentials.

This isn’t psychological addiction, we are talking about physical addiction. And sugar is comparable to the 2nd most addictive substance in the world, cocaine.

And you think that’s a good idea to give to infants?

You think that it shouldn’t face regulation?

Your argument is subjective and lacks substance. The facts are very clear here.

AlphaOmega , (edited )

I think you are missing the entire point. Nestle puts sugar in the baby formula because it’s a physically addictive substance. A mother who buys the formula but later tries to switch to different formula will end up with a baby going through sugar withdrawals. I think it’s safe to assume the baby may not even feed until it’s given the Nestle formula.

This isn’t the first time Nestle has done something like this, they have a dark history. Some might even call them evil.

Plus all the long term health issues associated with giving children sugar. “Added sugar intake at an early age may have adverse life-long health consequences, including overweight, obesity, cardiovascular diseases, asthma, and dental caries, as well as worse dietary habits” www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8624134/

And yes I think it should be regulated for children, based on the science it is a serious health issue.

Also you keep mentioning the “left” like this is some political discussion. This has nothing to do with politics. **I think most people would agree that using a legal addictive substance to hook babies to your product is a real dick move and something should be done to prevent it from happening. **

AlphaOmega ,

The first 3 episodes are written by one person, the last 5 are 5 different writers.

I think they nailed the design aspect, everything looks like it would belong and doesn’t look cheap or fake.

It starts off good and then suffers from some odd writing choices and feels rushed and not natural or fluid as you get towards the end.

Great actors, decent story, great design, overall a 7.5/10 for me.

AlphaOmega ,

That would be my first thought. Just mark as spam and keep your rewards.

Is that the one where MS updated the recovery partition by including a file that’s too big for that default partition? I had to manually resize my recovery partition to fix that issue

Well I guess 60 GB wasn’t enough space for the 10mb update

I used to work with a lot of young people and some of them told me they hated the Beatles. So I would randomly play Beatles songs and occasionally ask them what they thought. Turns out they never even listened to the Beatles except for maybe a couple of pop/radio songs. It was just a fad to hate on them

I literally just finished rewatching this movie 2 minutes ago. It still holds up really well.

AlphaOmega ,

Try running it with the battery removed to eliminate that as a potential issue. Running memtests, HDD tests etc will further help eliminate potential issues . This could be anything from somehow the system is grounding out, bad battery, bad ram, bad motherboard, blown capacitors etc

You can grab 10 year old 720 and 1080p projectors all day from shopgoodwill for like $20

I picked up Solasta. Pretty decent, but awfully linear with no real RPG choices. Worth $8

What should I add to my '90s website?

So I'm currently toying around with NeoCities, and decided to trial it by building your classic mid '90s Geocities/Tripod/Angelfire pastiche website.

Some of the most important elements are already in place.

Tile background? Large font? Heading in bright pink with a shadow? Unusual colour choices? Random cat gifs? Under construction gif? Check! Check! Check!

In the true spirit of the '90s DIY web, some more pages (including the links page) are coming soon.

(I'm thinking of adding a page dedicated to either Britney or a nu-metal band.)

You can see the page so far here: https://that90ssite.neocities.org/

There are a few things that I want to add to make it complete, and I'm looking for suggestions.

The first, is to embed a midi file that plays automatically. Any suggestions on the best way of doing this?

Second, it's just not going to be complete without a guestbook.

Third, any webring suggestions?

Fourth, what's the best way of adding a java chat room in 2024?

Finally, anything else that really needs to be a part of a great '90s website?

UPDATE: Thanks for all the feedback! I've added more annoying GIFs, a guestbook, a links page, and a cyber cat hangout.

UPDATE 2: And added even more gifs, an amazing Amiga demo, and a ton of links.

Weird. I can find and download a movie in a couple of minutes. It’s almost as easy as learning how to download and navigate Netflix.

Pirating movies has never been easier, but wait there’s more, you can just stream them for free too.

There’s even places you can buy a box for a one time fee, and have all channels and services free. Or get a subscription that offers every service and channel on earth.

It’s so easy my 80 yr old father can do it.

There’s no maintenance, no technical expertise needed, you don’t even need a VPN.

The only thing Netflix really offers is convenience and legality.

I use a paint brush, air compressor, cotton swabs and a tooth pick to clean mine when I’m too lazy to take it apart. Also if you have an air mattress, then you may have an air compressor.

Yeah like secretly attaching a gps tracker to the victims car. These guys are psychopaths.

AlphaOmega ,

As a developer this seems like a lot of extra work. I would assume that this was a supervisor’s idea.

But I wouldn’t necessarily consider giving the customer every possible option a bad choice. Giving customers the ability to fine tune their email notifications is really a bonus feature.

However, this is a horrible design choice to display 3 pages of multiple options. It’s an asshole design.

It would be pretty easy to group them into a drop down list where multiples in that category can be selected or deselected with a couple of toggles.

I would assume this was some genius executive decision, but there’s a very small chance it was a stupid design choice. Regardless the designer will always be blamed.

The biggest issue I have is that half my results come back as videos. Video results should be in the video tab. I don’t want to watch a half hour long video just to find out how to make a healing brew in ark.

Hulu built their entire system on this scam. Before Hulu, the majority of TV shows were available on their channel website for free, with ads. Hulu took this and added a subscription on top of the ads.

I haven’t had any issues with browser compatibility since IE. Occasionally Safari might have some CSS issue, but it’s been probably 10 years since I had any major issues with browser compatibility. Html 5 and CSS 3 tend to work across all browsers without issue.

After the update it’s been working as intended.
