I could make up a theory too that sounds great, without even believing it myself. :)

YouTube warns it might make your viewing experience worse if you don't turn off your ad-blocker (www.businessinsider.com)

YouTube warns it might make your viewing experience worse if you don’t turn off your ad-blocker::YouTube has been cracking down on people using ad blockers. Now, a spokesperson says that using ad blockers could lead to “suboptimal viewing.”

I’ve switched to the FreeTube app on desktop and now I’m just using it without a second thought. No ads and a much faster and better YouTube with absolutely no ads.

I’m not about to pay one of the richest and morally corrupt companies in the world for YouTube.

You really should listen rather than talk. This is not AI, it’s just a word prediction model. The media calls it AI because it sells and the companies calls it AI because it brings the stock value up.

1984 ,

Then we may as well call the field of statistics AI now, but sure, it’s a crazy world. :)

For me it depends a lot on the question. For tech questions like programming language questions, it’s much faster than a search engine. But when I did research for cars and read reviews, I used Kagi.

It's never been a better time to switch to Firefox (www.androidpolice.com)

• Firefox offers better privacy and security than Chrome, with upcoming support for 200 new add-ons. • While Chrome dominates, Firefox gains ground with user-friendly browsing experience and open-source model. • Mozilla’s focus on user privacy and transparency challenges Google’s ad-centric approach, making Firefox a...

I like deezer and I like that they are not part of big tech. It’s just a small French company with a quality product as an alternative to Spotify, which is in bed with Google and everyone else.

Well worth the money.

Deezer pays slightly more but Spotify has more users, so it seems to be about the same.

In 2023, you have to be slightly slow in the brain to keep using Google. Unless you don’t care about privacy, or ads, of course.

With this attitude, the problem is you actually. Sorry.

This is actually a pretty nice system. It works like a protection for all workers, that their salaries are set by the union and it can’t be changed by the company.

Of course Tesla doesn’t like that, and of course capitalism in general hates that, because how are you going to replace then with cheaper workers? Or fire them when they feel like it (this is also regulated by the unions).

Capitalism is at its core about exploiting humans, and specially humans that are weak and not able to compete in the capitalism class system. It’s company profits over humanity.

They altered the deal.

It was a good deal a few years back, so piracy decreased a lot, and streaming company profits grew a lot. Everyone was happy.

But then they altered the deal. It’s no longer worth the money, and any movie or TV show they have can disappear at any time. They also decided to start flirting with ads, so they burned a lot of trust by doing that.

It’s hard finding something worth watching. Once you have seen the few good shows at one streaming company, the rest is so awful nobody wants to touch it. So the subscriber is supposed to sign up to many streaming companies… Costing them tons of money.

If streaming companies were smart, they would work together and create one streaming service with all existing movies and TV shows, and set a fair price, and depending on what movies or TV shows people choose to watch, the profits go to whatever company makes the best content.

But working together is not what you do in capitalism…

Right to remain silent… Most people have no idea what they should do in that situation, and they get some shitty free lawyer that loses the case in court. The justice system in the US is ridiculous. :)

Rich people do what the hell they want, poor people get treated like dog shit.

What do you all do on your phones that isn't doom-scrolling or mindless mini games?

I find myself checking out pretty often and just making myself feel bad about the state of the world, or killing half an hour on stupid games that I could 100% live without. This is probably pretty common, and I’m wondering what other people have found as a way to do more productive things with their phones in the downtime.

Mastodon and today's fediverse are unsafe by design and unsafe by default (privacy.thenexus.today)

Even though millions of people left Twitter in 2023 – and millions more are ready to move as soon as there’s a viable alternative – the fediverse isn’t growing.1 One reason why: today’s fediverse is unsafe by design and unsafe by default – especially for Black and Indigenous people, women of color, LGBTAIQ2S+...

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Total bullshit article.

If anything, I’ve seen more LGBT people here and on Mastadon than anywhere else on the entire internet.

I think the community doesn’t particularly care if you are LGBT or whatever else you are. Does not matter.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Yes the fediverse is like society in general since it’s people here. That doesn’t mean it’s unsafe any more then real life is unsafe if you do stupid things, like go into unsafe areas of the city at night.

You need to find an instance that is friendly, which is not hard to do.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

I don’t know, I don’t feel that I have updates I need to get… I just scroll Lemmy and discuss things for a while, then do other things. I’m happy it doesn’t have tons of activity because social media is not supposed to take over our lives.

I see people on the bus sitting on tiktok and I feel sorry for them.

And as for switching instances, you are doing it wrong. You can subscribe to any community in the fediverse right from your instance.

Kind of agree actually. It hadn’t fully turned to shit yet but it was going on that direction. Now today, it’s like cable TV.

That’s really cool. You should try Pop OS as soon as possible on it. :)

But Linux Mint Cinnamon is also very good. Everything is simple and not filled with commercial messages and ads. Graphics is cute and nice.

Windows will keep getting more and more intrusive so you may as well be early in switching so you can help others later.

Elon's "extremely hardcore" toxic work culture means people are forced to take Adderall without a prescription to meet their workload. Just ask SpaceX employees.

"Some SpaceX workers resorted to taking Adderall to keep up with the pace of work at the company's launch facility, and others found themselves falling asleep in the bathroom during long workweeks, a recent Reuters investigation found.

"Travis Carson, a former SpaceX worker at the company's facility in Brownsville, Texas, told Reuters some workers took Adderall — a stimulant designed to help people with ADHD improve their focus and concentration levels — without a prescription to keep up with the pace of work."

They are forced? It’s illegal to quit?

These are people who refuse to leave Twitter, no matter how bad they are treated there. Maybe they should learn to quit instead of taking drugs to deal with the job.

I know American work culture is “don’t quit”, but come on, there are limits… If your work place is actually insane, you should quit. :)

No wonder this Elon fucker laughs all the way to the bank.

I think some of us are intentionally avoiding big tech now and try to find places online that doesn’t feel completely dead soul wise.

Lemmy feels good for me, but I’m also looking for web sites where I feel connected to people.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Thanks, yes, I guess it’s time to go back to following blogs and interacting with real people again on the web. Before big tech, that’s what the entire internet was. Just lots of original web sites from individuals wanting to show their web design skills or talking about random topics.

It just feels like it’s harder to find those now, and also a bit inconvenient to remember to go to each site every now and then. We got lazy with centralized services, with everything under one centralized controlled roof owned by an insane billionaire with mommy issues.

Windows.

In order to even get to the bash prompt, you have to use thing called Windows to boot your computer, and log in through that system before you can even see a proper command prompt in WSL. Also lots of commercial messages and ads being displayed before you even get there.

Extreamly bloated Linux distro, would not try again.

This guy was a legend. Steve Jobs took credit for everything but Wozniak was the brains.

Wozniak is a much, much better person than Steve Jobs was also. However, thanks to Steve Jobs, we got macbooks. Wozniak would not have put such polish on the products as Steve did, or market it the same magical way. Steve was great at marketing, but he didn’t have the tech skills Wozniak had.

Ways to pirate music as convenient as Spotify?

The reason I gave up on MP3’s and subscribed to Spotify was because Spotify was easy. I’ve been listening “Iron Maiden - Empire of the Clouds” song every day and like a week ago, its removed. This was the last straw for me. Right now I’m trying to find “Stremio” of the music world. Can someone assist?...

@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Use deezer. I’ve been on them for many years and it’s just like Spotify without the social media shit.

www.deezer.com

Good looking apps etc. It’s also French so no bullshit around privacy.

This is not piracy though but it’s such a good service that I’m paying for it.

I just read a review somewhere of the game, don’t remember the site. But they listed lots of issues with the current game beyond the graphics.

I also have the game and I agree, it’s fun and seems to work, but I haven’t played that much yet. Kind of waiting for more fixes.
