It’s different because for a while, there was no incentive for the average person to move to decentralised, libre XMPP when they could interact with the people there from Google Talk. If someone was on XMPP and asked a Talk user to come over, the odds they would be convinced were very small. Why would they when they can access it anyways?
Even if they didn’t kill it, they certainly stalled it’s growth, from the moment they federated.
Facebook will probably start not playing nice slowly, if they don’t right away, so it’ll be very hard to draw a line where they should be defederated, so larger instances and users may never end up defederating them thanks to blurred lines and constantly shifting goalposts. “We’ll defederate when they don’t play nice” is too vague to work when they move slowly and change things gradually.
When the vicious predator bares it’s fangs, it’s best to deal with it right away by running or fighting back, instead of trying to be friendly with it.
And how many of those Google Talk users would have created an XMPP account if there hadn’t been any federation at all? If someone was on XMPP and asked a Talk user to come over, the odds they would be convinced were very small. Why would they when they can ask you to create a Google Talk account instead?
Considering you’re right that that’s exactly what is happening here I can’t push this too hard, but I definitely think it’s very common and standard English to say “what’s 17.21 metres in feet?” and of course very common especially in metric countries to abbreivate metres to m. It’s also a logically odd request to want to know what 17.21 million inches are in feet with no “to” or even “in” (the in having been used up here by being assumed to mean inches) to give the query meaning. That would read as “17.21 million inches feet”.
Google is capable of supplying a unit conversion answer for you with the “in” construction for the query “17km in miles” for example so it understands “in” in the way many of us would expect it to but weirdly assumed that ‘in’ meant inches and that the query is constructed with no grammatical indication that a conversion is even being requested which is a bit of a funny leap. It’s understandable that this might perhaps not have been anticipated exactly, in as much as perhaps it’s not surprising that it doesn’t somehow have the capacity to evaluate the likelihood of such a request over the more “common sense” interpretation but whether or not it’s understandable that this mightn’t have been foreseen I think we could reasonably call the resulting interpretation as undesireable for almost all human beings that might ever use this tool and it’s probably fair to call it a bug in that sense.
If the descentralization of social networks continue, we will have to prepare for the eventual rise of the instances wars, where people will start to fight about which instance is better and which one is weird to be in and so on, but that’s for the future of us all.
I don’t believe the setup is a fallacy, the AUR is one of the main reasons I use Arch. Sure, other distros may have similar systems in place, but the number of packages available on these systems just doesn’t compare. I did a brief amount of research, according to the FreeBSD manual, there are “over 30,000” ports available. In comparison, there are over 90,000 packages available on the AUR, and all of those are in addition to the ~13,000 packages in the official Arch repositories. If I want to obtain a piece of software, even if it isn’t in the arch repos, odds are, someone has already gone through the trouble of figuring out how to build/package it, and has added the PKGBUILD to the AUR.
This way of doing things is so much more elegant compared to how things are done on Debian or Red Hat-derived distros, where the solution to the problem of a piece of software not being in the official repos is to either (1) scour the internet and try to find if the developer maintains a repo for your distro, (2) look to see if a third party has packaged the software for your distro, and hope and pray that they maintain it, or (3), compile the package yourself, after manually hunting down all the various libraries the application needs, determining what they’re packaged as for your particular distro. The third solution doesn’t handle updates at all, unless the application’s developer has built-in an update checker into it.
Things are getting better as snaps and flatpaks gain popularity, but both of those systems have lots of issues of their own, and arguably aren’t anywhere near as good as a proper native package for your distro. Flatpaks don’t really work for CLI tools. Snaps are stupidly slow. Both snaps and flatpaks still struggle with theming. Applications installed with either take up way more space than their natively-packaged equivalents.
Hi, as it’s in my title. I’m looking for narrative driven games with good story, something I can play on my steam deck. Not something open open world but more of a on rails experience....
Some of my favorite stories in games would be BioShock Infinite (mentioned elsewhere in this thread), Planescape: Torment (lots of reading, but very good), Spec Ops: The Line (stick with it past the first few hours...it picks up), and the Metal Gear Solid series (which, fortunately, are just becoming officially available on Steam very soon). And of course, for the type of game you're looking for, it would be odd if I left out the likes of Half-Life.
If you want a campy, thrilling, exciting story that knows it's dumb and doesn't take itself too seriously, I'd highly recommend the Mortal Kombat games. You'll have to pirate Mortal Kombat 9 (also known as "Mortal Kombat 2011" or just "Mortal Kombat") because it's no longer available for sale, but Mortal Kombat X and Mortal Kombat 11 continue off of it and lead into the upcoming Mortal Kombat 1. Likewise, from the same developers, the DC fighting games Injustice have really good story modes as well. I don't like much DC super hero stuff, but Injustice 1 (Gods Among Us) is maybe my favorite thing ever done with Superman. As for Batman, the Arkham series is held in high esteem, and my favorite of those is Batman: Arkham Asylum.
I'm also presently in the middle of Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition for the first time, and while the story isn't exactly blowing my mind, it's intriguing and keeping me interested leading up to the release of Baldur's Gate 3 in a few months.
Just started playing around with sunflower leaves, and I’m really liking the flavor they add to stuff, and am looking for other ideas I have not thought of as of yet....
Have you ever wondered why beekeepers wear white? Is it to see when a bee lands on them, to stay cool when its hot or is it a fashion trend that has stuck? The answer is simple and evolutionary. In ord
They're also cooler to wear. Bee suits get surprisingly hot even when white. The heat in the suit on hot summer days was the worst aspect of beekeeping for me. Bees show a lot of interest in blue anything so you don't wear blue overalls as you also tend to get more accidental stings (crush injuries to bees and things like that), and once one bee stings the pheromones released makes the hive more on edge. Mostly, the odd accidental sting won't rile the hive too much if they're a good breed and/or handled often but it does kinda tend to snowball.
I know this is going to sound like some clickbait bullshit title, but I’m genuinely curious, asking in good faith. My two oldest sons are enamored with him, and he seems like a genuine guy, so I’m asking - is he a nice guy? If you google the question, you get a bunch of reddit hate, which I don’t always trust,...
My personal take is that content creators and celebrities in general should never be judged as “people” in the sense that you might deem a teacher or a neighborhood kid as a “good” or “bad” influence. Rather, you should treat them as “media personalities”. Content creators are characters. They’re personas meant to drive engagement and clicks. Some achieve this by engaging in risky behavior or drama. Some just do wacky challenges. The motivation is the same in that the persona presented on the screen is a combo of the creator and the engagement from their community meant to drive up click rates and brand-building.
Mr Beast has kind of a “wacky semi-wholesome” image. Odd challenges and charities that hand out cash to random people for views. That’s a cynical take, but at the end of the day he’s a content creator, that’s it. If handing out free surgeries to correct childhood blindness didn’t drive engagement, he wouldn’t do it. If anything, the fact that his community is interested in seeing that project reflects more on them as people than on him.
So in my opinion the better questions for assessing his influence on your children are things like “why does his content appeal to you?” “What about his character do you find likable?” “What aspects would you want to emulate in your own life if you could?”

Absolutely love the work done so far by the mods, it’s a thankless tasks, but you’re all doing excellent. Only comment I have is there are too many pinned threads at the moment (at least on the LiftOff app), it takes a while to scroll past them. Not sure if anybody else is having this?
Why YSK: good journalism has a lot of costs (and not one-time-only), in time if not in money, so if any “news” source isn’t at least trying to get paid somehow*, then it indicates that the supply at zero price exceeds the demand (it is a “free good”), which means one of two things:...
Your first example is a very fair point, I wasn’t thinking about people who basically stumble into something important and decide to publish it. But unless something very odd is happening, that will not happen over and over again to the same person. More likely, it may happen to them once and then they’ll decide they want to become a regular citizen journalist, as you say, and then they will need to do a lot of work (with associated costs) even if they aren’t getting paid for it. Which would be another example of my first suggestion.
For the rest, I realize that there are plenty of examples where people provide accurate and timely information without charge (a lot of Lemmy is, and hopefully will continue to be, an example of that!). But those people are, for the most part, doing volunteer work, which is very valuable and healthy, but nevertheless is still work (that has costs).
I was not claiming that free goods, or free news in particular, “can’t” be worthwhile. Just that it implies that someone is supplying so much that goes above and beyond what a lot of people are trying to get that there is no need to charge for it. That can be an example of something very charitable and wonderful, or it can be an example of someone trying to push something that most people (rightly or wrongly) think is not very useful.

Two weeks ago, I had a date with a girl I met through a dating app. She was really nice, we had a great conversation and she told in person at the bar she would love to see me again....
I wouldn’t call it hard per se. I would call most current dating practices a waste of time. It’s a lot like playing the lottery, but instead of money, I pay with my time. And even statistically speaking, the odds are quite bad, for both sides. When you have so many choices every choice seems less worth it. When you have too few choices, competition is fierce. I envy neither men nor women in today’s scene, and I’d expect it to be much more difficult for the LGBT+ community.
I would say two things to you, not necessarily connected.
One, we think the grass is always greener on the other side. When I look back at my partnered life compared to my single life now, I would say my life now is better. After spending time with myself I was finally able to solve loads of internal issues. Relationships can become a very comfortable state and I definitely let myself go too often. I haven’t forgotten that loneliness also occurred while I wasn’t single.
Two, you can make no mistakes and still lose. As Picard said it best, that’s just life. If life isn’t working now, I wouldn’t expect a partner to fix it. After the honeymoon phase, we tend to fall back to our old selves. Use this time to get that self in order and perhaps while you do it you find yourself happier regardless of the outcome of life.
