Fyi you will not be able to do live video transcoding with a raspberry pi. I overclocked my pi4’s CPU and GPU and it just can’t handle anything but direct play and maybe audio stream transcoding, though I’ve never had luck with any transcoding period. I either download a format I know can direct play or recently started using tdarr (server on pi, node running on my desktop when I need it) to transcode into a direct play format before it hits my Jellyfin library. Even just using my AMD Ryzen 5 (no GPU) it transcodes like 100x faster than a tdarr node given 2 of the rpi cpu cores. You could probably live transcode with a decent CPU (newer Intel CPUs are apparently very good at it) if you run Jellyfin on the NAS but then you’re at odds with your low power consumption goals. Otherwise rpi Jellyfin is great.
Good luck, I’d like to build a NAS myself at some point to replace or supplement my Synology.
I heard it will be on the Fediverse. Is it true? I heard it had 30 millions users registered on the first day. Wtf. The whole Fediverse doesn’t even have 10 millions users. I heard it will not be available in Europe, yet. I visited www.threads.net and I don’t know if it’ll be the Threads instance to the Fediverse....
If you’re from the UK, “Threads” is known as an oddly scary TV movie that messed up many a child who watched it. So it’s already synonymous with end times.
I’m not here for mass-produced content, if I wanted that, I’d be in other platforms. The beauty of these communities is they are not filled with posts that are all the same, algorithms and bots. It’s just a community of real people having conversations.
The problem with the fediverse is that it's not really filled with posts at all. Maybe the Tech or Random magazines, if that's what you're looking for, but if you want to talk about cars or suits or model trains or whatever, you'll be lucky if you see one post across the fediverse in a month. Niches are empty, because most people here mostly have one interest in common, which is the fediverse itself.
Conversely, the value of large-scale social media, and the theoretical ideal of the fediverse, lies in positive network effects. You're into some obscure Japanese manga only four people who speak English have ever read? odds are, three of those people are on reddit, and you might find them. Looking for a review on a bootmaker you saw at the thrift store? Go to /r/goodyearwelt, there will be twelve threads about it, none of them sponsored or anything, diving way too deep into details you never could have imagined wanting to know.
But right now, look through lemmy.world or whatever, and tell me:
What are some good anime? Some good Shonen anime? Some good non-Shonen anime? An anime that represents trans issues well?
Where is a good place to get a suit under $400? In the US? In Europe? What's the difference between Huntsman and Edward Sexton's cuts?
What's a good recipe for a cake? What about a salad? How do you deflame a red onion?
Who is the vice president of the United States? Who is the secretary of state? Who is the Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Director of the United States Patent and Trademark Office?
Trivial questions, right? Most of them haven't come up here at all. Reddit is a massive corpus of knowledge, answering questions way more obscure than these, with enough people around to answer whatever question you might have in a variety of niche communities. People want that on a service they can trust.
I don't think many people want more tools to talk to strangers about nothing. Scale gives rise to better conversations and interactions in niche areas.
Also, Zuck can point to us feddies not wanting to federate with him, and say “see? Interoperability is pointless, even the geeks don’t want it”. Which is oddly accurate…

I think the easiest counter-argument here is healthy disagreement.
Being exposed to multiple opinions is undoubtedly important and is far, far better for us all in the long run than only limiting ourselves to only those opinions and views we already share or at least like, but having an option to wall somebody off on an Internet platform has its benefits, too, like not actually wasting your time in endless and fruitless arguments. As great as it would for everyone to be able to have a healthy and productive conversation about the differences in their views, it simply isn't wise to honestly expect that from everyone.
Besides, having two opposing ideas communicate on the same platform is not what the fediverse is for - not exclusively for sure. It's the freedom to self-host and self-regulate places dedicated to specific things to various degrees: lemmy.world, for instance, is wide and large and encompasses many things at once, and has an option to federate and communicate with smaller, more niche communities and vise versa, while letting the users open a single account with either.
Otherwise it's just the old Facebook formula of encouraging opposing views to constantly clash for the sake of engagement. That's just not real, not healthy, and only exists for the purpose of being some sort of KPI in a corporation perpetually hungry for money and influence. So yeah, we don't want that.
I used to browse Reddit 90+% of the time from my phone through the RiF app, so after June 30th, here is what I did and what I recommend as a starter pack for others in the same situation:...
TLDR: From my experience, in 2023, the Mesa drivers with an AMD GPU provide an experience that is way better than NVIDIA with their proprietary drivers. And if you’re helping a friend get into linux, and or linux gaming I think you should steer them towards an AMD GPU....
I’m planning on switching platforms and I’m just curious of the opinions of people here. I think that Android can have advantages in areas of privacy and external app installation, but most of the benefits come with a lot of tinkering out of the box....
I made the switch a year ago from android to apple. I did the whole rooting and degoogling thing but that took time and I had bugs sometimes which required more tinkering. At one point I was like I don’t have time for this and the nexus to pixel switch didn’t convince me to keep going with android. I switched to iOS and haven’t regretted me move. A few android phones like Sony and Oneplus almost convince me to go back but not yet.
Th blue and green bubble is blown out of proportion especially now that android made the update that green bubble people can emoji respond to messages now. Before you used to get this odd messages that was like so and so laughed at this message.
One thing I would warn you about is the App Store. Most apps cost money which is a pro and a con depending on how you look at it. There are money grabbing subscription apps but I can usually find an awesome one time fee app. Generally the apple App Store has good quality apps but there’s a fee. This kind of adds to the apple eco system because now you paid for high quality apps and they may not transfer if you go back to android.
There is a 0% chance of me ordering Chuckie Cheese pizza. There is a non-zero chance of me ordering pizza from a random restaurant. So in that regard, even with me they’d improve their odds, although still slim.
I tried one called Lemmur that I downloaded off F-Droid, however, it can not find this instance (lemmy.world). I want one that’s open-source, and preferably from F-Droid (because screw Google). Which one do you guys use?
Honestly, using wefwef.app as a web app is hard to beat right now. It works very smoothly, and I finally understand why all the iOS users mourn the loss of Apollo so hard. Granted, using an iOS-esque interface on an Android device is a bit odd, but the gestures and the layout are just chef’s kiss.
The biggest issue with it is that it’s getting hammered on the primary domain, so I’ll probably move to self-host it sooner than later.
I am trying to get Outer Worlds: Spacers Choice edition working, but it has horrible texture flickering, regardless of the proton version of in game graphic settings....
That’s truly odd, I’m running a Ryzen 5600G and a 6700XT and the game is rock solid (Fedora 38, Gnome, Wayland). Runs great on Steam Deck as well. I wonder if the RX580 is the culprit? If MESA is up to date, try a newer kernel for updated Radeon driver? (I assume as Ubuntu 22.04 is LTS that you’re on an older kernel)
For me, it was the game Rocket Jockey released by Sega Soft in '96. It was perfect. The game featured a surf rock soundtrack by Dick Dale. The entire premise of the game was to ride around on rockets and using long cables to yank your opponents off theirs. Referees were also fair play. I don’t think I’ve met anyone else who...
Yeah, the unfortunate downside to the Fallout games is that it gives you a wide variety of potential character builds, but unless you’re somewhat proficient in combat, your odds of survival are slim. Which, I suppose, would be accurate to a real-life post-apocalypse scenario
Interesting move by Canonical. Wonder if this is related to the new GUI for LXD that Canonical released recently? Or maybe they want to bring more projects in-house after the RHEL shakeup?
I haven’t been following, but that’s actually good to hear, proxmox needs a better ui.
LXD, I suppose for the migration, but for any more complex orchestration I think you’ve moving to k8s or something more serious, LXD just has an odd “not enough but too much” feature set for me, I like things either push-button, or let me do it, this is kind of both.
I agree, I think separate tallies for up and down might be a really great thing.
On that other place, while lots of downvoting is “obvious”, a lot is really odd, like someone posting a technically correct, documentable, verified answer, and it gets downvoted? Also black-supportive or LGBTQI+ stuff gets downvoted at times. 9000 ups and 9000 downs at the same time would be umm interesting.
I kind of don’t think it’s that weird. I grew up with computers and I use one for work in a technical field where understanding them helps. But I also barely use one anymore other than for work or the odd game. People who grew up on phones and want to develop for phones or consoles might never have needed to use a computer but can still be interested in computer science.
Of course, but cracks are starting to show. My point was that this is an absurdly long time for something like reddit to be around at all, so the remindmebot comments that were set for years out weren’t as out there as the guy above me seemed to think. Hell, reddit share holders seem to be upset with what’s going on, so there are decent odds they’ll revert the changes and we’ll be back there in a year.

This has come to mind because all the chatter about Meta federating....
