Huh, the games did phenomenally well in America. Weird. /s
We're in an age of knee-jerk finger pointing, with the problem getting worse the higher you get in society. It's just one giant game of blame hot-potato.
Here's the thing: The producers don't owe the fans shit. They don't owe the fans an explanation even. They owe the investors an explanation. The fans are just there, that's the reality of being a fan of something. We don't get a say, we just can choose to watch or not, and then decide to trash it or praise it online if we want to.
So while there's a problem going up the ladder of the blame game, there's another one coming back down the ladder, and it's entitlement. For some odd reason there's an air of "we deserve this content, exactly to our specifications" and it permeates games, movies, music, all of the entertainment content we have been inundated with as a society. And I think the culture generally leans towards encouraging it because it keeps the culture thriving. But it also keeps us in the exact status quo we're in as a society, beholden to these billionaire publishers we all rail on daily.
Because let's face it: We as a society spend an enormous amount of energy and as such, destroy a lot of the planet, on all this entertainment. If we can't accept that as a fact then we're fucking doomed.
I disagree with lemmy.world’s decision, for three reasons:
Address problems as they appear - negligence is bad, but so is jumping at the gun.
Locking users out because they’re misbehaving is different than locking them out under the assumption that they’ll misbehave.
Given that lemmy.world is a generic purpose instance, odds are that it would work better by letting users sort themselves out, and only intervene on problems when it is not reasonable to expect users to do so.
I also think that lemmy.world’s current size in comparison with other instances is a bit problematic. It’s great to see instances growing but it would be better if said growth was spread out.
Just my two cents, mind you. I’m from neither instance.
ROME, July 31 (Reuters) - Discontent mounted on Monday in Italy over cuts to a poverty relief scheme by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s rightist government that will affect hundreds of thousands of people.
In Naples, trade unionists and far-left activists organised a rally outside the headquarters of welfare agency INPS, while in a small town in Sicily an unemployed man threatened to set the office of the mayor on fire.
INPS last week sent a text message to roughly 160,000 people to warn them they would be excluded from the scheme - a method of communication that has been criticised as “brutal” by the leader of the opposition Democratic Party, Elly Schlein.
“I’m 58 and I cannot enter the labour market because they always tell me that at my age, 58, I am not (employable), just a few odd jobs, always off the books, underpaid”, one of the Naples protesters told RAI public TV.
The snag is that registration procedures to access the new subsidies are not yet fully available, raising fears payments will not start for a while, leaving people with no form of income support for months.
• “Under the Cloak of War”. The flashbacks in this episode are set during the Federation-Klingon War seen during DIS season one, and a large part of that conflict was the new Klingon cloaking devices that T’Kuvma, and then Kol installed on their various ships. Get it? Yeah, you get it....
Now why would they want to do that, seems odd. Wouldnt they want to show they are supporting the free speech (their CEO says this is the case) platform, what would it gain you to hide this badge?
I think that’s a skewed way of looking at it. I can see the appeal if your family is able to take advantage. Like if your kids are off and your spouse doesn’t work (or maybe can also work remotely). That way you can enjoy some nicer weather and a different location and are able to stay longer. It’s definitely not for me because like you said I’d rather just have a vacation, but I think blaming it on capitalism is a bit of an odd way of looking at what’s essentially someone’s lifestyle choice.
Massive Pratchett fan here so I’m giving the new series of Good Omens a go, and I don’t know why I keep subjecting myself to TV Pratchett adaptations.
There’s the odd giggle, and I like the actors, but three episodes in it just goes nowhere, it’s just a series of skits with Aziraphale and Crowley.
They’re only one component of what made the book great, but I get the feeling that the production crew have gone “Tennant and Sheen are great, the show is now only about them”.
Tech experts are starting to doubt that ChatGPT and A.I. ‘hallucinations’ will ever go away: ‘This isn’t fixable’::Experts are starting to doubt it, and even OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is a bit stumped.
GPT can write and edit code that works. It simply can’t be true that it’s solely doing language patterns with no semantic understanding.
To fix your analogy: the Spanish speaker will happily sing along. They may notice the occasional odd turn of phrase, but the song as a whole is perfectly understandable.
Edit: GPT can literally write songs that make sense. Even in Spanish. A metaphor aiming to elucidate a deficiency probably shouldn’t use an example that the system is actually quite proficient at.
According to these new numbers from Valve, the Linux customer base is up to 1.96%, or a 0.52% jump over June! That’s a huge jump with normally just moving 0.1% or so in either direction most months… It’s also near an all-time high on a percentage basis going back to the early days of Steam on Linux when it had around a 2%...
But a non Trump candidate wouldn’t fire up the Democratic base either, and steal some of the voters away from Biden at the same time.
There’s many democrats that even today say they didn’t vote for Biden, they voted against Trump and that was who the democrats picked. They might be saying that, but I think even someone like Ron Desantis might have good odds of winning. Basically it’s probably going to be a tight race if the Republicans don’t nominate Trump… And yet Trump’s the most likely nominee right now.
His odds of being convicted in a few of these trials are very high. BUT he’s trying to delay them with his lawyers making long motions and objections in hopes he gets elected President so he can either delay a verdict and sentence while in office or try to pardon himself.
The classified documents case will likely be pushed back but this new indictment will probably be judged before the election. If he doesn’t get nominated or elected then he’s highly likely to get prison. If he wins re-election then he will literally dismantle the DOJ to stay out of prison.
Them we all just pack up and give up on humanity, America is an odd place but electing a guy that’s, well, literally Trump?
Yeah there are a lot of people caught up in the culture war but trump has just done too much, especially after last time there would be an awful lot of people remembering the feeling when he won and how they regret wasting their vote 3rd party or staying home because they didn’t like Hilary
Reddit beats film industry, won’t have to identify users who admitted torrenting::Court quashes subpoena for names of users who talked torrenting in 2011 thread.
Doubt it. Most Lemmy instances are run by one guy on a spare PC. They’re not set up to deal with legal requests, versus the police just barging in and taking the PC, while all the neighbours look on and assume you’re a paedo.
While there doesn’t seem to be an IP address field in the Lemmy schema, they could always get it out of the logs. There is an email address field, but I think that’s only used for initial signup, verification and resetting your password, so if you used a temporary one they’d have nothing to give.
I don’t know what the film industry would even do with the info if Reddit gave it to them. Likely just more bluster to deter casual pirates into thinking there are consequences to downloading the odd movie.
Note: It seems my original post from last week didn't get posted on lemmy.world from kbin (I can't seem to find it) so I'm reposting it. Apologies to those who may have already seen this....
That’s odd. I’m currently monitoring 17 vms on one host along with a handful of physical devices. Nothing like the issues you’ve encountered has happened.
I’ve been absolutely slamming Persona 5 Royal. I’ve ran into a couple odd hard freezes with the game, but I’m about 60 hours in at this point so it clearly hasn’t stopped me.
CTH did more than just troll, but doing something in addition to trolling doesn’t make you not a troll. Most of the rest of Reddit didn’t experience the fun in-sub content, they just experienced its trolling and brigading, and we don’t need to pretend that Hexbear and r/CTH aren’t largely one and the same. They don’t need federation to do the internal culture stuff you’re waxing poetic about, they need federation to troll.
And I couldn’t care less whether calling CTH or your thousands of friends trolls is going to make you hostile. THEY were hostile to other people because it was fun for them. The trolling is already here via the OP. It’s tiresome and just degrades forums for their targets and everyone not in on the joke trying to figure out what their issue is. You guys don’t get to spend years trolling reddit just to say “we have a new name now, so you can’t judge us on our prior actions”.
Maybe admins will wait and see. If somehow it isn’t a huge source of trolling then I fully support federating. But I’m going to say I don’t think the odds are good. And if the admins do what you expect and don’t go back and revisit the choice I can’t say I’m going to think it’s a huge loss.
He needs daddy’s approval and the other billionaires are surrogate daddy. That would be the social agenda influence you’re referencing. Look at how desperate and odd he was on stage with dave chapelle, that was a core view into his base self, he needs to be praised. He’s also a eugenics/natalism cult member and sees the wealthy as his equal, superior “race” of people - so he would 100% sacrifice a lot for even their passing approval.
