I had heard about it for a week, but finally signed up when a mod I trusted on a reddit sub I used posted a sign-up link to lemmy.world. I'm somewhat tech proficient, but that extra step of figuring out a good instance to join was enough to stop me for a while. I didn't want to join a dud and have yet another dead login somewhere. YMMV, of course!
Same here. Even subs (instances? communities? still figuring out the lingo, sorry) are so quiet I’m even posting actual posts. Or on news posts, I have a question about the content where on reddit someone will have already asked and I can just see what responses or vitriol they got.
Since we are all pirates moving away from Reddit I was thinking if another r/Megalinks style community could be made on Lemmy and survive? (Or pehaps already exists?)...
Agreed. It still is a pain to follow subs on other instances, especially within Jeroba. I know you’re supposed to copy the !sub into the search field, but it never comes up.
I’ve seen many comments and posts regarding the API fiasco on Reddit, with the claim that there will be a huge influx of users when that happens. I’m all for it, but I find it hard to believe that the average or even above average user will make the effort to switch.
I imagine there will be a big uptick in the number of new users but it won’t be a huge wave, not initially. Human nature being what it is, users will switch to the official app, mods will try and muddle through with a more limited toolbox and, slowly, the wheels will fall off as people find that the user experience has been degraded, leading to a fairly steady flow of people moving over (and a decent number moving on as Lemmy likely isn’t ready for primetime just yet). I think what will be key is whether the most experienced moderators and most active posters make the jump - without them the site is a hollow shell as it is largely built on their disproportionate contribution. That might speed up Reddit’s downfall.
The best thing we can do is make their landing as soft as possible.
Make sure there are welcome posts in each instances main communities.
Keep an eye on Reddit for people asking how to make the move.
Keep an eye on the relevant communities here for anyone struggling.
Also I see the name lemmygrad thrown around, what’s the story with them?
Lemmygrad.ml is an instance for Marxist-Leninists and other Socialists who are broadly pro-AES (Actually Existing Socialism, i.e. the USSR, PRC, Cuba, Vietnam, East Germany, etc.) and anti-West. Criticism of AES is fine; but the assumption is that you’re there because you think AES is better than Actually Existing Capitalism. If you’ve ever heard of podcasts like TrueAnon or The Deprogram (or even Chapo Traphouse, to some extent, though they’re more “ML-sympathetic” than “Outright Marxist-Leninists”), it’ll give you a general idea of what sort of politics they’re about.
Lemmygrad is where Leftist Redditors go when their favorite subs (/r/ChapoTrapHouse, /r/MoreTankieChapo, /r/FULLCOMMUNISM, /r/GenZedong) get banned or quarantined.
I’m not a big Lemmy-head, but I saw this post on lemmygrad so I assume that means your instance is federated with lemmygrad.
Something I miss from Reddit was that just about all my favorite games had their own subreddits. Like I happen to be a huge fan of Snowrunner but I don’t see any communities specifically about Snowrunner on Lemmy. But Elden Ring has a community on 2 instances with less than 100 subs total. I think the one hosted on Lemmy.world...
Why YSK: Because intuitive explanations are few and far between, and the technical explanations often present too many "trees" and not enough "forest", which is just how technically-minded people are trained to approach things. Huffman has said, “We are not in the business of giving that [Reddit’s content] away for free.” That stance makes sense. But it also ignores the reality that all of Reddit’s content has been given to it for free by its millions of users. Further, it leaves aside the fact that the content has been orchestrated by its...
I was reading these comments on beehaw yesterday defending the defederation from shitjustworks because of T_D sub with like 10 subscribers and I was already getting a little worried thinking what I’ve gotten myself into. Glad to see the view on this on other instances seems a bit more balanced and reasonable. Beehaw seems toxic as hell.
Interested in getting a feel for what people may be likely to do IF reddit reverses their decision regarding API access, or reduces access fees to a reasonable level and 3rd party apps remain sustainable....
To use with feedly. Also, found a lemmy instance called lemmit.online/c/requests that will pull content from a subreddit to lemmy and set up gamedeals, but didn’t have luck with buildapcsales
But, days of accounts is done. I don’t want to provide direct data to them anymore.
Regarding Beehaw defederating from lemmy.world and sh.itjust.works, this post goes into detail on the why and the philosophy behind that decision. Additionally, there is an update specific to sh.itjust.works here....
A fellow mod informed me that about it as I was laying in bed. Reddit sent a message to the mod team and after 1 hour demoded me. I didn’t even had time to see it, never-mind respond to it....
Given the size of Reddit, admins don’t check when mods abuse users, I had my 10 yr account with 150K nearly permabanned because of a mod banning me from my own countries sub for posting a non offensive meme on the wrong day.
I wasn’t logged in on a computer, was using Reddit which showed me my local subs by default and the saved login credentials was a different alt.
I was typing a comment reply, realised I wasn’t logged and signed in with the other alt, didn’t realise it wasn’t another local sub and I got suspended Reddit wide for “ban evasion” and nearly lost a decade old major account because a mod in my countries sub abused their position.
I never retaliated, wasn’t rude, didn’t genuinely try to evade the ban and nearly lost a decade of activity.
There are a lot of benefits to the fediverse and I plan on hosting my own personal instance soon.
Ublock Origin is an obvious one, but I also can't stand not having Foxy Gestures anymore. It adds customizable mouse gestures, so you can set it up to have easy swipes to go back a page, reload a page, close a tab, etc, and it feels wonderful and smooth to use compared to just using the traditional buttons to do everything....
I use Firefox. Other than Ublock Origin and Bitwarden, these are some of my favourites :
Temporary Containers is a new favourite of mine. It works just like container tabs, but the difference is that it deletes the history of that tab once it’s closed, similar to Incognito/Private instance.
Reddit Comments for Youtube - If a youtube video has been linked to reddit, then it basically gives a small box which lists all the subs the video has been linked to and shows you the comments. If you’re logged into reddit, then it will allow you to comment as well.
Keepa for Amazon. Let’s you track price history for any product, so you can see if a sale is actually a real sale or not.
Tab Session Manager - Basically lets you save tab sessions.
Enhancer for Youtube and Pockettube Subscription Manager - Gives various youtube enhancements.
Stylus - To style websites. I mainly use it to fix the youtube thumbnail and font size.
@Cameri I came to Android to use rif for reddit. It's gone now and now i'm using the mastodon app chatting with everyone on lemmy.world and other instances. I have a main account on lemmy.world but i just use it to moderate my sub check my notifications and that's about it. I really like my S23 though
I run a few groups, like @fediversenews, mostly on Friendica. It's okay, but Friendica resembles Facebook Groups more than Reddit. I also like the moderation options that Lemmy has....
Lemmy has bugs and lacks features. Assuming those get ironed out and I expect they will in time, I’ll like it a lot better than Reddit. Actually even with its shortcomings I like it better. The issues facing Reddit are of a different nature and for sure those will never get worked out, only worsen.
Otherwise the content on Lemmy is adequate for me. What’s interesting is I actually get more rounded information here. Reddit is so big that I can only subscribe to a limited number of subs before I get overloaded. Here I’m subscribed to a healthy set of communities so I see posts on a wider array of topics.
I think people are a bit intimidated by the Fediverse at first. Once you have a basic understanding of what’s going on, it becomes pretty transparent. It’s just the added step of finding a good instance to log into. Once you’ve overcome that, it’s all downwind sailing.
I see people listing things I’ve never heard about…I thought I had spent a considerable amount of time on the old sub and knew stuff. Guess I gotta hit the books.
Right now though I’m hosting everything on a 2012 Mac Mini that’s running Proxmox.
Been using these programs for awhile now:
Photoprism
wireguard
web blog testing instance while the live one lives on linode
plex
filebrowser
pi-hole
homepage
Nothing crazy but cool stuff to learn in my day to day. I want more hardware but I’m about to buy a house. It’s crazy how much I’m throwing at an 11 year old computer and it’s handling it all quite well.
