Socially? Would never happen. Imagine our population is just stock. It goes up and down depending on how good things look. At some point, it cannot continue as it’s not financially feasible. But when it drops back down into realistic numbers, balance goes up again.
You can see this behaviour in the generations (Z, Y, X, Boomer, Pre-war, etc.) These generation changes are marked by a tipping point of birthrate increasing or decreasing in a nation—typically globally, which is why we all tend to agree on the start/end of generational eras within 3–5 years.
Those are solid. I found Voskhod razors E X T R E M E L Y consistent between blades and comparably as smooth as platinum, nacets, silver blue.
I cut the shit out of my face with just about everything else I tried.
If anyone reading this is new to shaving, I would recommend Gillette as a good starting point and then try other brands. Don’t get a variety pack, because you get a bunch of shit blades.
I use Creamo shave cream and like it. It’s cheap as fuck, and nice and thick. You can control how thick with how much water you use. I found other creams get pretty watery pretty quickly
You demonstrated the ineffectiveness of the approach by assuming I’m a Democrat or even American.
Actually I assumed you’re a lemmy user, of which I’ve yet to meet one who doesn’t generalize republicans whether the poster is american or not. Not without reason, mind you, many republicans are say, racist, though many are not. It serves as a damn fine example of exactly what I’m referring to and is also a generalization in and of itself, which doubles back to make my point again. I understand the process, and in fact at times see value in it rather than simply nature at work, the trick is knowing what to do with the generalization. Should you hate X because X usually Ys? No, but if Y is an undesirable behavior trait in X you should at least find out if they Y before becoming entwined with them somehow.
Again, the point is that those accounts are still users that can be pointed out as such for all to see. Remember: a youtube account is just a Google account.
One could argue that youtube is a highly effective loss leader - people get into the Google ecosystem because of making an account to subscribe to their favorite content creators. Now Google has data they can sell, and metrics for advertisers to go “I see 18-30 year old white guys who watch things about X are likely to respond positively to things about Y.” The algorithm, even without advertisements, is constantly building a profile of every user.
X men of Lemmy, what advice do you have for Y men of Lemmy?
Why not allow answers from women and for women? You already know most answers will be from and for men, why specifically exclude the least empowered amongst us? I thought I’d gotten away from that when I left reddit. We can be better.
In the UK we have had 2 MPs assassinated in the past 10 years. One Labour and one Conservative. Comments that essentially say, “The government should do what I want or there will be more political violence”, are inciting violence.
The figleaf of being like “unless X happens, someone will do Y” is the same as 4chan maniacs threatening to commit acts of terror “in minecraft” or whatever.
The key capitalistic trick is to time your step 2 just when you have a critical mass on your platform. Upper management has understood that our shitty paywall will remove x% of our users from our platform. But if (100-x)% of our users can pay $y annually, we can sustain our business model and make $z of profit each year. PR will take care of all the backlash but it’s all calculated.
Marketing promises ARE a contract. Companies aren’t allowed to advertise a thing and then not do that thing. That’s false advertising and fraud. Companies aren’t allowed to say they offer a product or service for price X and then actually charge price Y. This is well established law.
You either didn’t read or didn’t understand the article. Multiple times in multiple ways the company said it’s offering a lifetime price, which is different than a price offered only for a limited term. They very explicitly said “T-Mobile will never change the price you pay” and “T-Mobile One customers keep their price until THEY decide to change it. T-Mobile will never change the price you pay” etc. etc.
Im introverted and have always enjoyed my solitude. Some people have complained that I don’t talk much, which is true, I don’t need to talk to feel good....
I don’t know if you have a techical mindset, but think of this formally.
Let’s say we have individuals A, B, C, and D, where you are A. Maybe you can learn things about B, C, and D, but what you’re really interested in is the pairwise behavior: (A,B), (A,C), (A,D). Because B may behave differently with A than they may with C.
But B may also behave differently if D is present. So the behavior of B in the setting (A,B) is going to be different than in the setting (A, B, D). Imagine that D is the workplace manager, and you can see why.
However, professional and personal context will also play a role. Think of professional contexts a = in a work meeting, b = at work but in the cafeteria for lunch, c = in the parking lot on the way home. Think of personal contexts x = a loved one is terminally ill at home, y = their neighbors initiated a lawsuit against them, z = their sibling just had a child. In each individual’s case, they will react differently to those personal and professional contexts.
Finally, all of this is “noisy”, meaning each individual is working with limited information, and likely to misunderstand why a given person is acting the way they are. So imagine the setting (B, D) where B knows that D is going through a messy divorce. Compare it to (B, D) where B thinks that D is just annoying. Clearly this will change the behavior of B, and therefore of the interaction.
All of this may seem overwhelming, but in fact it’s fascinating. @Today recommended “just follow basic social norms” and that’s great advice. Cultivate a baseline way to act professionally, accept that you may never really know why someone acts the way they do, and take a detached but interested approach to the complexities of human interaction.

I’m pretty sure they are actually hosting it. The tech is quite different (cofractal uses urls ending with {z}/{x}/{y}, while their tile sever uses this stuff that works quite differently)
The few times I have bothered to ask technical questions I mostly get one of the following:
Ideological ranting. "The problem is you aren’t running arch linux in that corporate environment with proprietary hardware you need to interface with"
Complete refusal to read the question. "I totally didn’t read that you said Foo was not viable for reasons XYZ but you should use Foo"
Complete nonsense
Reddit has a lot of that too but ALSO has the institutional knowledge of people who actually care enough to answer. Similar to stack overflow.
I try to help where I can but this is an enthusiast “site”. So you have all the people who suggest all the crap they heard on linus tech tips rather than “Okay, for my day job we use X but no sane person should use that at home. Look into Y”.
That said: I have said it before and I’ll say it again. The age of the online message board for tech support is long gone. Because the super useful results might be talking about a bug from five years ago rather than a bug from today. The answer really is ephemeral discord servers.
what’s hilarious is that the cybertruck has a really shitty turning radius. compared to an average truck… (an f150, IIRC), it’s actually slightly worse, even with the rear wheel steering. The whole reason they added it because it was just that atrocious in the first place. Instead of reconsidering things like wheel base, wheel track and steering angle and just staying with standard, normal designs… said, “naw, you know what, lets just make it even more complicated.”
it’s basically why I will never buy a tesla. instead of using standard, proven engineering design choices like having mechanical steering that turns to x degree for y turning radius… they make that shit a thousand times more likely to break.
Or. For another example. Door handles. They had to be cool. Motorized, touch sensitive door handles that had to have all sorts of cool factor. Except it’s entirely uncessary. You could have had a flap to keep rain and stuff out, with a plate that pulls against or into a switch (of one of a dozen varieties,), letting you pull the door open with very little being around for the handle to break.
(the argument for the flush handles is aerodynamics. This of course ignores the fact that people have been making shaved handles for hot rods for decades.)
The court basically said it was a separation of powers issue. The basic powers of the branches are:
The Legislative (Congress) creates laws
The Executive (President) actually puts those laws into action (they are “executed” by this aptly named branch)
The Judicial (courts) interpret legality of the actions of the Executive branch based on the wording of the laws passed by Congress, and the constitutionality of those laws (that is, if the law itself is even legal to be enforced)
The Chevron Deference doctrine was the courts saying “Congress occasionally writes laws vaguely and we don’t have expertise on every subject matter, so we are going to defer the decision-making of what exactly the law means to actual experts in the Executive branch.” Congress has written laws using this logic, intentionally granting power to the Executive branch that would otherwise reside with Congress (i.e. Congress says “how much of X particulate in the air is too much? We could write a specific law stating that 500 ppm is too much, but it’s a lot of work to do that for every particulate, and the science gets updated over time, so we’ll just tell the Executive to place ‘reasonable limits’ and call it a day.”)
Now the Court has said “That power you’ve ceded to the Executive branch? That should be ours because it’s our job to interpret what laws mean. We now decide how much of X particulate is too much, even when we mix it up with Y particulate.”
It’s a blatant power grab by the Court and a separation of powers issue. Congress SHOULD be able to remedy it by specifying that this decision-making power should reside with the Executive branch and the Judiciary won’t be able to say “no mine”. I mean, this Court WILL, but a legitimate Court wouldn’t.
