LASIM can copy your current subs to another instance, as others have said. I wish there was a way to migrate posts/comments over. I guess you could just link to your old account in your bio though.
Hi, I’m the author of cue, a music player for the terminal that let’s you type what you want to hear, using partial song titles. You can type in the partial names of artists, albums, playlists or individual songs. Good for instance for when you are using the terminal and want to take a break and quickly launch music....
Hi all, I’m a Lemmy FOSS app contributor that’s made a couple of tools for people starting small instances including Lemmy Community Seeder (LCS) for building content on new server’s All Feeds and Lemmy Post Purger (LPP) for clearing old posts on smaller instances....
I disagree that defederation hurts Lemmy. It doesn’t hurt it anymore than normal moderation hurt Lemmy. Users on defederated instances are more than able to create an account on a non problematic instance and follow the rules there.
Defederation is essentially Lemmy’s version of quarantining subs on Reddit. And nobody except maybe extremists thought quarantine was a bad idea
Usually, when you open a website, that site might be pulling live data from somewhere, but it’s from a database on the same server. If you click a Fediverse link, and no-one else from your instance has already done so, it seems like your instance has to contact a remote site, pull the data and render it, in the same timeframe...
I think I’ve seen people mention tools that have been created to automatically subscribe a dummy account on your instance to all the communities on the largest instances to kind of bootstrap the process for other users, but I don’t have a link to such a tool handy
They have a bot at lemmings.world that subs to the most popular communities. It’s mostly to benefit their ‘All’ feed I think, but I imagine it’s good for this circumstance too.
There is no such thing as “global search” in the fediverse. (Unless you use off-instance tools like lemmyverse)
Search can only return results that at least one local user has interacted with (meaning, subbed to).
The exception is when entering the url or exact name of a user or community. In these cases the server will actually contact the other instance, to establish a new federated connection. For a given community to appear on a given instance, at least one user must do this, and subscribe.
Until that happens, an instance will not receive incoming content related to that community, and hence it will not show up in search results.
Triggering this behaviour requires you to be logged in, and for the client to support detecting that you’re doing so, and sending the relevant, different, authenticated API call.
Additionally, if you are that first person, even once the community starts getting federated, it takes a while for the content to start coming over. Are you sure you were seeing “copies” and not just half-synced newly federated communities? Old comments and votes do not get synced when the connection is first started by a first subscriber from a given instance. Also, the subcount you see only tells you how many subs the community has from your instance, not globally.
Go to the communities page for your instance, set it to all, and scroll through the first several pages adding anything that sounds interesting. Don’t worry if there are duplicates, sub them all. The search for any favorite topics and add those communities, too. Then browse by subscribed»new going forward.
You can also check out !newcommunities for communities still getting off the ground.
Oh! And when linking, do it like I did above; this link works no matter what instance you’re on.
Ironically, from what I’ve seen the sync users have been way more radical than the “anti-sync” users.
Before you read this I cannot stress enough that I’m neutral in this, I’m just a little irritated that I’m now seeing this in basically every sub.
There’s been examples of the reverse from both sides, but the fact that I am now seeing this spam about pointless shit like this on shitpost is proof of this.
It is just an app, both of you. Sync dev should donate some profit (even as small as 1%) to Lemmy devs because his app relies on their software. App itself doesn’t have to be free but if it includes anti-features in the name of profits it is only fair, otherwise it is an exploitation of the GPL.
Lemmy being a FOSS project with no ads running, it is pretty much up to devs pockets, instances pockets, and donations to keep the project going. If the sync developer is going to make money off of an app that essentially serves as a gateway to this service, ethically speaking he should contribute to it considering the software itself is what even makes the app function. If Lemmy were to shutdown, the app would be useless.
Having been involved in the FOSS community for 18 years, the community heavily relies on the collaboration, contributions, and donations of those who partake in it. Without at least one of those things, the project dies, I have seen it hundreds of times now. Wherever you (all of you) may stand when it comes to FOSS, know that using Lemmy technically makes you a part of that community.
We will see if the people here are sane or not by watching the karma of this post. If it is negative then the people in this argument are blinded by unnecessary rage and need to cool it.
As you see from the screenshot, internet funeral is now featured on the first page of lemmy.world communities. I just wanna say thanks to anyone who have contributed to this community, weather posing or commenting. I never thought in a tech focused instance, that a sub as weird as mine would be this popular. I doubt this would...
So while I understand the love for FOSS and an Ad Free Experience, somebody still has to pay for the server time. Now I know this doesnt exactly work in THIS scenario with Sync, but couldnt ads and paid subs in Apps be a good way for Lemmy/KBin instances for be financed without having to rely on donations?
For Example, imagine if Lemmy.ml had their own app with their own experience and if you wanted to support it without actually handing over money, now you could use ads in the mobile experience and feel a little better about your lurking.
I haven’t dug into the docs so I’m not sure if this is a feature or a bug, but I’ve noticed that old posts will never get pulled into my instance after I subscribe. So a sub can appear empty, but then I’ll click to go to its home instance and it’s full of posts. Lemmy only syncs new posts upon federation (but again, not sure if that’s intended/expected).
This is the biggest usability problem for me on Lemmy right now. I don’t want to hop between instances.
I think now is a great time to remind everyone, like sync’s developer, Lemmy’s developers need to be paid too! The amount of time all the devs put into making lemmy exist, in my opinion, should be worth some of your money. If you can afford it, donating to the people who develop lemmy and/or the people keeping your home...
This is all I’ve been trying to get across, y’all won’t be able to enjoy your sync if the admins can’t pay for the servers. Seek out your home instance’s donation links and come up out them pockets like y’all did for Lawrence. This applies to everyone else too, but since I can clearly see sync users commenting that they paid to remove ads or for lifetime access to upcoming features(like posting), I know they have the money 😂
As far as .World goes, their lowest Patreon sub is $1 a month.
Well, I’m subbed on .world so it’s only fair I pay my way on this instance, irregardless of it’s size, the admins put in a lot of work after all. But, yeah, without the Lemmy devs, no instance has actual software to run so funding them has to be the priority, at least right now.
Just a little rant. When I first visited Lemmy Sites a couple of months ago it felt empty. Besides the really mainstream community pretty much everything else just felt empty....
I have to disagree. Consolidation seems almost never to improved anything. Take Reddit, for example. I once found a sub called HikingAndCamping. Since I’m a hiker, I looked it over. The top mod only allowed discussions of hiking and camping on Mt Everest (or some equally nonsensical narrow topic). Since I actually wanted to discuss hiking and camping generally, I tried to create CampingAndHiking as a more accessible community. But that same top mod had already claimed that name as well under an alt. Reddit refused to do anything, but when they notified him that I had requested the dead sub (no posts and the alt hadn’t logged in for years), he jumped in and created a single “Go away” post. Then he sent me a private message to the effect of “I’m squatting to keep traffic flowing to my other sub. You want to talk about hiking and camping in general? Sucks to be you.”
Here, I’d just go to another instance and create the c/ that we wanted and move along. That’s part of the beauty of federation. Users can then join the one(s) that appeal to them and everyone gets to have their community.
This is still an issue with Lemmy though. Ultimately, one instance’s community is going to be “the” community for a given topic, most likely because it’s on a popular instance, and at a certain point it’s going to devolve the same way default subs did. People who wouldn’t join r/SeaWa probably aren’t going to join [email protected] with 50 active users, either. Personally, I’m more inclined to choose r/SeaWa over r/Seattle because it sounds less official.
This seems more like an aesthetic issue than a real problem, and don’t get me wrong, I’m all for getting the community name you want on a different instance, but I don’t think that’s grounds for “Lemmy will never become a circlejerk”.
Some niche communities are lacking, though I don’t see them existing/growing without a large increase in userbase, since they’re you know, niche. Cities for instance… some I used to frequent on reddit exist on Lemmy, but are naturally not as active. Also I used to talk in (hooray) a couple subs about chronic illnesses which are like, 1% or less of the population, maybe more since sometimes it would be family members or parents talking. Celiac, type 1 diabetes. Same as cities there are communities about those but they are not very active yet.
yeah I think I’ll go to the ad removal fee. it’s expensive but I use it a lot 🤷♂️
I originally did the monthly sub because I didn’t have an option and that was the cheapest, it is kinda pricey but it’s light years ahead of what I was using
also I’m a developer and I think the guy who made it has probably working like mad to make this, and if it’s his sole income and it got pulled out from under him… idk. it’s a gamble to not just go get a 9-5 and work on this instead
bro has to eat and I already donate to my local instance.
It’s fairly big relative to other lemmy instances because it’s been around for over 3 years, and it was a lifeboat site for people that frequented r/chapotraphouse before it was banned from reddit (which was a relatively huge sub).
Over the past year or so they worked to switch from a heavily modified fork of lemmy back to a more modern upstream version of lemmy, mostly by redeveloping and contributing features that were missing, like custom emojis, to upstream lemmy. So now there’s more attention being paid since it is now using a federation-compatible version of lemmy and intends to actually federate with a limited subset of the lemmyverse
That’s just a consequence of decentralization. That’s why all names are qualified by the instance name as well. It’s not perfect, but we’ll, on Reddit if someone picked the sub name you wanted then you’re sol and have to choose a different name, so there’s pros and cons to each. Simply subscribe to the most active version of the community you’re interested in and network effects will pick the winner.
The website doesn’t seem to be down, but glitched or something. I’m getting an http 400 error through my app. When you pull up the website in your browser, it pulls up the Lemmy regular homepage but with “Error” text. Maybe a misconfiguration somewhere?
Kinda off topic but does anyone know of a gay porn instance? The gay sub communities on lemmynsfw and pornlemmy are pretty barren, and the rest of the communities content seem to be aimed at cis straight men (nothing wrong with that, just not what I’m looking for!)
When I search up a community in, for example, lemmy.world and lemmy.ml, the subscriber counts differ from each other. Are the subscriber counts of communities viewed from a instance only valid for that instance?
I’m just asking for recommendations in case, I feel like migrating to a smaller instance or maybe try kbin for a change (but I’ll miss the voyager web app)
I have my tiny instance that currently has 4 users, with me being the most active. I update Lemmy regularly, upgrade and manage resources as needed, and even do server management via my phone when I need to. Federated with all of the big ones so there’s no lack in content and I’m always scouring for new communities to sub to. The only rule I have (aside from the ones stated in the rules page) is no NSFW. It’s mostly a CYA measure for myself.
I just finished migrating over to your instance from lemmy.world. I’m liking what I see. Everything seems nice & snappy. (One suggestion: consider turning on email verification to shut down potential bot accounts a bit more thoroughly)
It takes a bit more effort to setup your subscribed /c’s on a smaller instance (if you’re the first on the instance to sub to a /c, you need to already know the address for it). But once you’re subbed to everything you want, it’s business as usual. And without constant downtimes!
(EDIT: Had to log in to my old .world account to find this post to comment on it, since I had it bookmarked here)
Lemmy is popular nowadays, yet is losing its active users (lemm.ee)
Similar to Mastodon’s spikes last year, it seems. Anyways, there is data to think about. Source

Lemmy is slowly getting better
Just a little rant. When I first visited Lemmy Sites a couple of months ago it felt empty. Besides the really mainstream community pretty much everything else just felt empty....
After migrating from Reddit, it’s jarring that comment sections aren’t cluttered with hashtag-style comments that are just links to subreddits like /HoLuP/
I love that comment sections here are like, y’know, discussions and stuff. Not just the same jokes and parroted phrases over and over and over.
What does Lemmy lack?
Just wanted to ask: what do you not like in Lemmy (Lemmy as communities, server and clients)?...
I like a good UX (lemmy.world)

Are sub counts instance-specific?
