gunpachi OP ,

Well, by “good” I meant general purpose, no NSFW, federates with bigger instances, consitent uptime … etc.

gunpachi OP ,

Many thanks. May I also ask if there is an alternate frontend client or perhaps an android app for kbin ?

Ad blocking on android

I would like to pirate on my phone sometimes and the ads on websites are problem. I’m not newbie, I know I can install firefox and get the uBlock on it but firefox android is a little bit slow so I prefer to use Opera browser; opera has an ad blocker but it’s a joke compared to uBlock. I’m in a restricted country and my...

  1. Create a free Nextdns account.
  2. Add some blocklists
  3. Use the private dns settings on your android to set the dns. (i think this feature is present in Android versions which are 9 and above)

Voila ! you have blocked ads without wasting your VPN slot.

As an added bonus you can also configure nextdns to block your specific phone vendor tracking as well.

If you are interested in trying different web browsers you can check out Fennec from F-droid or Brave browser. These are my go-to browsers on android.

gunpachi ,

I think maybe OP doesn’t like kiwi’s UI/UX

gunpachi ,

I use nextdns in ‘private dns’ options on my android phone to block ads. This give me the option to use VPN, which I wouldn’t get if i use DNS66 or Adaway.

gunpachi ,

Kotatsu is a good one, people often don’t recommend kotatsu. Maybe that’s because tachiyomi offers more features.

gunpachi ,

I have not used IRC extensively. But i have used nibl.co.uk (for anime) a couple of times when I couldn’t find torrents.

Which android device is unbelievably good but few people would buy it?

For me it’s Motorola G72. It’s excellent for the price. The phone is super lightweight despite having a 5,000 milliamper battery. The UI is very snappy and animations are very smooth (high refresh rate). It supports double tap on the back plus all other neat Motorola gestures. The under display fingerprint scanner works...

Wow, i wasn’t aware of this phone until I saw this comment. It reminds me of the Galaxy S5 active.

gunpachi ,

I know 2 apps

  1. Milktea
  2. Kaiteki

Milktea seemed to work for me when I tried it when Firefish was still called calckey.social. kaiteki app just gave me a blank screen, so can’t comment on that.

Anyway, I just use the web app if I use firefish.

I have not used kbin yet. Is there any feature that really makes it worth using over Lemmy ? I’m curious as I want to try it out sometime.

P.S - I use Lemmy through wefwef

Privacy with Google's Gboard (lemm.ee)

The only app I can’t live without. Except for gboard, all of my applications are Foss. There is no competition for gboard’s swipe typing, not to mention its many capabilities like as searching for gifs, stickers, being able to paste copied images, translating, and so on. I’d like to know how I can use gboard while...

gunpachi ,

On my old phone i used Florisboard, it was pretty good and it’s FOSS as well.

These days I use the samsung keyboard as I recently switched to a samsung device. The keyboard customizations are really awesome, if you have KeysCafe module installed. Not sure how privacy friendly it is tho.

2 months ago I bought a regular samsung galaxy s23 and it’s been running great so far. I expected MIUI levels of bloat, but surprisingly it is not that bad.

I had to disable a few samsung apps and for the most part, the phone stays out of my way and lets me do whatever i want.

I wish the s23 lineup gets good custom rom support. Would love to run a lean LineageOS / any AOSP based rom with MicroG on this phone.

gunpachi ,

I’m not an iOS user, but I have seen something like revanced which can be sideloaded.

The app was called uYou+ or something, i don’t reacall the actual name.

gunpachi ,

You can go to their official website and download it - f-droid.org

Personally I prefer to use fdroid through Droid-ify.

Why is Linux so frustrating for some people?

Don’t get me wrong. I love Linux and FOSS. I have been using and installing distros on my own since I was 12. Now that I’m working in tech-related positions, after the Reddit migration happened, etc. I recovered my interest in all the Linux environment. I use Ubuntu as my main operating system in my Desktop, but I always end...

gunpachi ,

Opensuse is great. Yast was more useful than I initially thought.

On a different note - For people who like tinkering, nixos can also be a great option, it also allows rollbacks but doesn’t use BTRFS snapshots out of the box like opensuse.

gunpachi OP ,

Okay. So although all the apps support activitypub - only similar apps can replace each other ( like mastodon with calckey)

Apps with different feature sets will have to remain seperate, but will allow following users from different apps (lemmy and mastodon for instance).

Basically there is no single app that can do everything (as of now)

This is idea that i get after reading through the comments. Please correct me if i’m wrong

gunpachi ,

I wish Graphene also supported other devices apart from Pixels.
