I'm starting to find some of the cooler aspects of the wider fediverse.

For instance, Lemmy is a Reddit clone that is picking up some migration after the recent hooha or at Reddit.

The cool thing is that it's federated (same as mastodon, different instances and everything).

This means that you can subscribe to any community on Lemmy, for instance

https://lemmy.world/c/showerthoughts

through its fediverse address, right here on your mastodon instance:

On Mastodon, Lemmy communities show up similarly to how a regular Mastodon user does, and can be searched and tagged similarly. So in this case, OP tagged this community specifically rather than any others with the same name.

I believe if you try and tag multiple it only posts to the first community mentioned in your toot, but don’t quote me on that one!

No it actually wasn’t. Idk if you used basically any search engine nowadays but SEO bullshit has destroyed useful results for like 90% of searches.

Subverb ,

I use paid search engine kagi.com; search results with no ads or “promoted” crap.

Seeing search results without all the advertising is shocking the first few times you do it. It’s amazing how much advertising pollution has crept into Google’s search results.

You can set general options for all compilations in /etc/makepkg.conf, and package specific options would probably be best handled by just downloading a PKGBUILD for the package in question and editing it to include the option you want to enable. makepkg won’t ask you about options by default when building something, but it’s not that complicated to edit the PKGBUILD prior to calling makepkg.

Update available! This version is very old.

Xscreensaver has apparently been checking for updates and is disappointed that it hasn't had one for 14 months because Debian is too stable. Can anyone recommend a linux screensaver which would work with xfce and can be trusted to never do that?

bisby ,

A lot of people don’t know this though. They think it is the “won’t fall over” type. They hear “use debian over ubuntu, because it’s more stable” or “use debian for servers, because it’s more stable” and think it means “You want uptime, so you dont want something crashing”. So when they see a bug, it is concerning to them. A distro focused on not falling over must super care about reducing crashes, and don’t realize the exact opposite is actually true. The bug was fixed a long time ago, but you don’t get it because “don’t change” is more important than “don’t crash”.

If the bug is in a popular package (ie, a super common screensaver) in a very popular distro (and a lot of people have chosen the distro because they think it has less bugs than others), I can imagine the maintainer getting fed up with the bug reports for a bug that was already fixed.

Most people I’ve seen on Lemmy understands that “stable” means “unchanging”… But every person I’ve talked to outside of lemmy, thinks it means “less bugs”. So clearly it’s a very big misunderstanding (Which is basically confirmed by the fact that xscreensaver gets so many invalid bug reports that they felt necessary to do this.)

bisby ,

Oh look. Debian changed the keepassxc package and now the keepassxc repo is getting all the bug reports for it. Their stance is “it will go away in a year or so”

Regardless of whether or not it is a good idea, it’s undeniable that Debian makes a lot of decisions that negatively impact their upstream. And since it’s someone else’s problem, oh well.

There is a reason upstream repo maintainers wind up angry about problems that someone else caused.

I read them recently - mostly it’s the same stuff as in the canon gospels tbh. Some have more of a Buhdist slant (Jesus isn’t God but we’re all god style) but nothing out there.

Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir on "Face the Nation," October 1973

Israel's leaders' megalomania and hubris were always so evident, it's embarrassing to think Netanyahu and his Ultranationalist coalition are somehow different from what came before them.

[~18:15] There's no problem of a solution. If you're talking about refugees, they should have been out of the camps 20 years ago. We almost took out of the camps many refugees in the Gaza Strip since the 6-day war, but there is room for the refugees in Jordan and there is no doubt that if they want a peaceful solution, Jordan is the natural place for Palestinians if they want to live there.

[~18:50] There are 20 independent Arab countries, but if the Palestinians want to come to more of self-expression, there's no doubt that between Israel and Jordan there would be one Arab state - Jordan. And that part across the border of Israel, that's an Arab state, that's Jordan. They call it Palestine, Jordan, Palestine, doesn't make a bit of difference.

Problem with WiFi driver in arch linux

Hi everyone

I've been trying to solve a problem with my arch (endeavour) instalation and wanted to know if anyone here can help

Everything is working well, excepting the WiFi connection. It is extremely slow, sometimes disconnecting from the network, and in the task bar, the WiFi icon shows that the signal strength is weak, although the router is in the same room. Switching between r8168 and r8169 as recommended doesnt work. Any ideas?

@linux

nirogu OP ,
@nirogu@vivaldi.net avatar

@Rustmilian @linux Yeah, it's close to impossible to find documentation on what to do here. I'm trying to find out how is it that Fedora works well with the same hardware, and even considering changing the card itself, but for the moment at least my connection is much more stable after setting the iwlwifi.conf file
Once again, thank you for your help!

crossmr , to til

There needs to be actual content rules. TIL worked best when the mods actually adhered to those content rules. Otherwise you just have people posting all kinds of nonsense. Quality is better than quantity

crossmr OP ,

@Chozo if your post is 'TIL A star system exists' and you can't really tell us an interesting fact or piece of information about it, I'd say.. don't write something to be honest or if you really want to write about that thing, try to find something interesting about it to actually submit. TIL on Reddit also has a rule about titles standing on their own. Yes you can expand on topics inside the submission, but people should get something simply from reading your title. A lot of those titles don't really give you anything at all.

Do you think potential candidates should be reimbursed in some form for taking assessments that are required by the employer in order to be considered for employment?

Also, should this be available for only job candidates who are not considered for the position?

Or should it go for every job candidate, even the ones that get the position?

Thanks for reading and being your most precious and sensual self ❤️.

aksdb ,

I did a 2 day long “bootcamp” for the company I now work at. Basically two days working directly alongside my future colleagues but on a non-product related exercise task. I really appreciated it. First day was still weird and I was nervous, but on the second day it already felt normal and all conversations were extremely relaxed.

I got involved in the daily team routine, took part in coffee talks, etc

Doing the actual task was just time filler for getting a feeling of the new workplace and for them to see if I fit in.

Especially thanks to the second day I knew I loved it there and that switching job will be the right move.

This was before Covid, though. Today this probably wouldn’t work anymore, with most people working from home and most meetings being remote anyway.

What I am saying is: it’s not just for the company that hires you, it’s also for yourself. Expecially if you have to quit another job first.
