How many interviews have actually been done with homeless people? How many of their stories of struggle have you actually heard?
Few to none I'll bet. That's because everyone involved in producing the glamour of a thriving society makes it a priority to suppress just how badly it's failing.
@acm_redfox
Thanks, very neat! I hope they become useful for people whose voices are under/mis-represented, the way the signal of #actuallyAutistic helped replace some noise from autism speaks on #tumblr and spread from there.
This is the 3rd time I've seen someone who makes YouTube videos go mad trying to second guess "the algorithm."
YouTube provides creators with a firehose of data: How long people watch, when they stop watching, the distribution of views.
YouTube also sometimes selects videos using a secret, unknowable algorithm to be "promoted." For small and medium creators this is a huge deal and the difference between 500 views and 500,000.
For self-critical analytical minds it's a toxic combination. 1/
Once again I'm seeing a creator I like as a person, someone who cares about science get obsessed and maybe a little delusional about little blips and kinks in the watch-time graphs for his videos.
You see suddenly "the algorithm" hasn't been boosting his videos like before. He didn't change anything the views just dropped off. And so he's looking for a reason he can control for this happening.
But... it might not be anything rational. They change the algorithm all the time. 5/
My advice is to avoid depending on YouTube if you have the option. It's not a good work environment.
I hope that this guy comes out of it. I'm not kidding when I've said it's driven other people mad. Like they had to get therapy because of it... which sounds funny ... until you think about what it would really be like.
Thanks for letting me share about this. It's weighing on me today--
One of several secondary reasons why making a Fediverse reference on Place is so hard to maintain is that the Fediverse is built for far less uniformity and tribe mindset.
Edit, I did say one of several secondary reasons. I have no illusion that I've spotted the #1 main reason.
@guy_threepwood
Agreed. The tribe mindset on display shows me how users who love reddit as it is are not a good fit for the Fediverse. Maybe less advertising to that crowd is a good thing.
Hey Ya'll! I was thinking of hosting my own Mastodon Instance, but noticed that it's pretty big as in software, I'm looking for something a bit more light. I'm preferably looking for something that runs in docker, as I have that installed on my Linux book, Yes, I am using Linux as if I attempted to use Windows, MacOS I wouldn't have a great time.
Anyways, I was going to choose lemmy, but I think that's also heavy, not sure though!
GoToSocial is designed for small / single user instances. There’s more with similar goals like snac, seppo, pub, ktistec, tapir, shuttlecraft, activities.next, and microblog.pub, but I haven’t really looked into them so I’m not sure on the status of each. There’s a nice list of activitypub software at delightful fediverse apps if you want to look at more options.
@CoinOfNote@histodons@numismatics I’m going to guess Ukraine or the Soviet Union. Seems like a communist idea to put factories and plows on your coins.
@curmudgeonaf@histodons@numismatics
Definitely the right thinking there! You'd find factories, and plows, all over the world of course, but there are some places much more likely to feature that imagery on their coins.
@dogzilla@paninid I just read "The Pursuit of Happiness" by J. Rosen, which had this fun fact about Jefferson: His great fear was that god is a just god and would require recompense from Jefferson for his hypocritical refusal to give up his lifestyle and the enslaved humans he needed to maintain it.
Thank YOU for letting me know you joined the Knowledge Commons instance as a result of my above report on it. They -- @hello -- might also be glad to know this.
Speaking of your mission of films for social activism, through our family friend in Tokyo, I happened to encounter such a group based in NYC led by a Chinese-American woman, with collaborators in Canada and here in Japan. I reviewed their most recent documentary -- available free at https://hi-lo.tv/Our-Work -- on professional photography of Japan's hostess bars, as explained at https://hcommons.social/@SteveMcCarty/112621109879323004
Being a career academic, it was my first foray into a film review or that kind of content, but it all goes toward my challenge as a Japanologist of explaining this inscrutable culture (for once a stereotype is an understatement!). If you happen to contact Hi Lo TV, please give them my regards.
N628TS (Elon’s main jet) is at Fort Worth Alliance Airport back in maintenance with Gulfstream. Just days after it was with Gulfstream Service in Appleton, WI for several months.
