Well, here's a nice one for @CoinOfNote (as well as all @histodons ):

Tom Holland: We must celebrate England’s forgotten founding mother

"If a fire broke out at Tom Holland’s house, the one item he would rush to rescue is a coin. . . . For his 50th birthday Holland tracked down and spent 'my entire family savings' on the coin that was minted in Chester during her rule, which had been found in an abandoned Roman fort before appearing at an auction in New York"

So cool.

In the year 284 This Tetradrachm was issued under Roman Emperor Numerian. I am constantly amazed that a coin minted nearly 2,000 years ago can be dated to the year! @Ooze @histodons @numismatics indeed, although the descendents of all WW1 soldiers, from all sides, could all "why?". What we really remember, is the bravery of those from New Zealand and Australia, who stepped up for the ideal of country (and yes, empire) and perhaps even more because it wasn't directly self defence of their country being invaded. Many would fight if their country was invaded. Fewer would fight for ideals (misguided or not)

CoinOfNote OP ,
@CoinOfNote@historians.social avatar

@Ooze @histodons @numismatics indeed, the Gallipoli campaign, as an allied military campaign was a disaster and all the sadder for that. That itself SHOULD be enough lesson to not glorify war (it isn't, we know that)
We also need to not repeat the mistakes of the Vietnam war. The way those soldiers were treated when they returned was appalling, because people were against that war. Soldiers generally join for altruistic reasons, but then get sent where the govt decree

CoinOfNote OP ,
@CoinOfNote@historians.social avatar

@Ooze @histodons @numismatics I don't think anyone signs up believing they will be asked to do anything which is against their morals - whether they are signing up to fight in a specific, current conflict or not. In any case, If you're against a particular conflict, argue or protest it with the government of the day. They are the ones who decide where the military are deployed, not individual soldiers. Just as if you don't like Coles policies, argue it with management, not the checkout staff

On April 21, 1926, Queen Elizabeth II was born.

Eight years later, on April 21, 1934, the Daily Mail newspaper printed a photograph purportedly of the Loch Ness Monster. The photograph was later revealed as a hoax, but still a fascinating creature.

How to tie these completely unrelated events together numismatically? Here is a 20c coin from , 2020, featuring Queen Elizabeth II and another unusual (but real) creature, the Platypus on the obverse.

The RMS Titanic set sail on its maiden, and only, voyage on April 10, 1912, hitting an iceberg at 23:40 on the 14th and sinking at 2:20 AM on the 15th. 2012 was the centenary of this event so no less than 41 legal tender coins were issue (though none circulating).
