@technology Oh, for sure, they mention the App Store fees and extensive review process, but in my opinion involving the price of the iPhone and past history of Apple is strange (and seems to make the case weaker).

Eeeeehhhhhh… you can’t really fault a company for a previously unknown hardware defect going against their stated principles. That’s like faulting the devs of OpenSSH for their principle of security because CVE-2023-38408 existed for years.

Hate on Apple for legitimate things, of which there are many.

FDA Approves First Medication to Help Reduce Allergic Reactions to Multiple Foods After Accidental Exposure

https://www.fda.gov/news-events/press-announcements/fda-approves-first-medication-help-reduce-allergic-reactions-multiple-foods-after-accidental

@news

Fondots ,

From the article

Xolair is intended for repeated use to reduce the risk of allergic reactions and is not approved for the immediate emergency treatment of allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis.

Epi Pens are for immediate emergency response for allergic reactions, they aren’t preventative in any way.

Epi Pens are basically just a shot of adrenaline, they don’t actually act directly on your immune system at all, it’s basically just sends an override message to your body to forget about whatever else it’s doing and focus on opening up your airways, pumping blood, or whatever else you might need in order to, for example, run from a lion.

Which buys you some time, but you’re still probably going to need some treatment or monitoring once the adrenaline wears off, and you’re probably going to feel like shit afterwards, and epinephrine isn’t without it’s own pretty significant risks and side effects.

Evilcoleslaw ,

Yeah OIT will slowly “train” your immune system to not react to increasing amounts of an allergen. This is literally a monoclonal antibody that binds to free IgE antibodies so that there will be fewer of them around if you’re exposed to an allergen.

It seems much more well suited for its originally approved uses of allergic asthma and nasal polyps (which are caused by recurrent allergic inflammatory processes involved in sinusitis/rhinitis) than it would be for food allergies.

@samid @actuallyautistic I believe the thing is, the mere act of smiling when you dont feel like it means the same in masking [M] and emotional labor [EL], youre right. But ALL scientific research that is referring to the concept of or containing the term EL has the proposition of an NT person that due to its NT wiring WOULD smile in this interaction with a friend, and just dont feel like to do it job-related [if not in the mood/sympathy]; and that just isnt the case for folk.

rebekka_m OP ,
@rebekka_m@fnordon.de avatar

@samid @actuallyautistic By drawing that line I just would like everyone to have in mind that the knowledge concerning EL + the precautions that one might be able to do to NOT feel the burden of EL - doesnt apply to autistics, because masking is a different psychological concept. While writing I just had the thought that masking for ND people maybe could be compared to an NT that always forces themselves to make a "disgusted" face when greeting a friend, instead of a smile.

Strategies for the free fediverses

https://privacy.thenexus.today/strategies-for-the-free-fediverses/

The fediverse is evolving into different regions

  • "Meta's fediverses", federating with Meta to allow communications, potentially using services from Meta such as automated moderation or ad targeting, and potentially harvesting data on Meta's behalf.

  • "free fediverses" that reject Meta – and surveillance capitalism more generally

The free fediverses have a lot of advantages over Meta and Meta's fediverses, some of which will be very hard to counter, and clearly have enough critical mass that they'll be just fine.

Here's a set of strategies for the free fediverses to provide a viable alternative to surveillance capitalism. They build on the strengths of today's fediverse at its best – including natural advantages the free fediverses have that Threads and Meta's fediverses will having a very hard time countering – but also are hopefully candid about weaknesses that need to be addressed. It's a long list, so I'll be spreading out over multiple posts; this post currently goes into detail on the first two.

  • Opposition to Meta and surveillance capitalism is an appealing position. Highlight it!

  • Focus on consent (including consent-based federation), privacy, and safety

  • Emphasize "networked communities"

  • Support concentric federations of instances and communities

  • Consider "transitively defederating" Meta's fediverses (as well as defederating Threads)

  • Consider working with people and instances in Meta's fediverses (and Bluesky, Dreamwidth, and other social networks) whose goals and values align with the free fediverses'

  • Build a sustainable ecosystem

  • Prepare for Meta's (and their allies') attempts to paint the free fediverses in a bad light

  • Reduce the dependency on Mastodon

  • Prioritize accessibility, which is a huge opportunity

  • Commit to anti-fascist, anti-racist, anti-colonial, and pro-LGBTQIA2S+ principles, policies, practices, and norms for the free fediverses

  • Organize!

The free fediverses should work together with people and instances in Meta's fediverses and on Bluesky whose goals and values align with the free fediverse

https://privacy.thenexus.today/work-together-with-metas-fediverses-and-bluesky/

Part 6 of Strategies for the free fediverses

Many of the Meta advocates I've talked to share the free fediverses' long-term goal of building a sustainable alternative to surveillance capitalism -- and the same is true for people on Bluesky. So there are likely to be situations where some of the people and instances in Meta's fediverses and Bluesky wind up as situational allies to the free fediverses.

A few areas where collaboration could be very useful:

  • A key principle of organizing is meeting people where they are.

  • Moderation on decentralized networks is a shared challenge.

  • Bringing concepts similar to Bluesky's custom feeds to the fediverses, and more generally focusing on human-focused and liberatory (as opposed to oppressive) uses of algorithms in decentralized social networks designed from the margins.

  • Meta's fediverses, Bluesky, and the free fediverses are all vulnerable to disinformation.

Instances in the free fediverses should consider "transitive defederation" from instances that federate with Meta

https://privacy.thenexus.today/consider-transitively-defederatiion/

Part 7 of Strategies for the free fediverses

Transitive defederation -- defederating from instances that federate with Threads as well as defederating from Threads -- isn't likely to be an all-or-nothing thing in the free fediverses. Tradeoffs are different for different people and instances. This is one of the strengths of the fediverse, so however much transitive defederation there winds up being, I see it as overall as a positive thing -- although also messy and complicated.

So the recommendation here is for instances to consider : discuss, and decide what to do. I've also got some thoughts on how to have the discussion -- and the strategic aspects.

The last time I played most of these were from 1988 to 1996. One or two I played again sometime early 2000s, randomly.

I already started with and Part 1, and I'm already cheating. ROFL. I mean, the packs made it easy to cheat.

Back in the 90s, we had to use a hex editor like . We open the savegame file, search through it through the hex editor, and did our magic.

Another person’s perceptual experience may not be the same as ours.

This is Fundamental to understanding the experience of folks. I always assumed everyone perceived the way I do & I’m just a sook who can’t cope. This is not true! I am sooo glad my partner now understands this.

Same applies to information processing & seeing patterns. I thought everyone can see what I do. They don’t. We’re ok.

It’s bleeding obvious once it’s put this way, innit. I struggled all my life to understand my differences w sensory &information processing, thinking of each bit as a different issue & me as sooky &broken. Framing as neurodivergence over the past 15yr (since my early 50s) has been a revelation. Reframing is slow work & there’s a lot to grieve for, but through it all the company of nd peers is THE BEST THING.

"Convergence of low points on a spiky profile" is a good theory; comorbidity is also a good theory. I don't think we have enough data to even guess which, yet. But ultimately I don't think it matters ... the solutions are the same regardless.
