Engineer, most girls probably wouldn’t think twice about software* but engineer has a ring to it. Like doctor.

Microsoft still uses those phrases un-ironically all the time.

Ow God I just cringed so hard I partly digested my skin. All those wacky Microsoft conferences. I’ve never felt so infantalised.

It’s funny when I’m looking for work and people try to help me find jobs. I’ve been sent jobs for “coder” which turned out to be “medical code entry into EPIC” and architect because they saw another job with “software architect”.

When people ask me what I do for a living I tell them that I furiously bang on a keyboard until the computer does what I want.

Idc, just please don’t call me a coder, it makes me sound like I’m a script kiddy.

NocturnalMorning , in As someone not in tech, I have no idea how to refer to my tech friends' jobs

I’m technically an aerospace engineer, but all I do is code most days. I think it depends highly on what you do, since my job also involves doing things not strictly coding related as well, I always slap the engineer title next to it. If you only code, then it’s more appropriate to say software dev, or programmer. But, again its highly dependent on your role.

And as other people have mentioned, seems like outside the U.S. the term engineer is a protected title, so my take really only applies within the U.S.

I would say tho, a lot of programmers in the U.S. do get called software engineers. Just depends on where you go I guess.

Jrockwar , (edited )

I don’t think what you study in your degree is the defining factor. Obviously this is country-specific but I feel you job title isn’t always linked 1:1 to your title.

I studied Industrial Engineering, which in Spain exists as a degree but not as a job position. Position wise, I’ve been a mechanical design engineer, a manufacturing engineer, an automation engineer, robotics engineer, and these days I’m mostly a software engineer. I’m definitely specialised in engineering, regardless of the tools I’m applying to solve the task at hand.

NocturnalMorning ,

My title technically is aerospace engineer, but yeah I get what you mean.

Looks interesting. Except for the fact that an instruction is modified after execution, this is quite simple in the end. Unless I missed something. But yeah, self-modifying instructions makes loops really hard.

I started a CS club in college and it was crazy how many members would tell me this. They would ask me questions like I hadn’t picked up programming the year before and taught myself via the internet. If you want it, it’s out there.

This is a semi-good LPT. You can save a lot of time and grievance by just not folding your clothes and throwing them into piles (inside boxes or drawers, preferably) by type (socks, underwear, shirts, etc). Bonus tip - if you have a spot where dirty clothes keep piling up (used to be bedroom for me), just put a laundry basket there (in the exact spot you discard your dirty clothes).

If you hate doing laundry, get a dryer and do this, it will make it so much easier. It becomes transport your basket from your aggregation area, dump it in the washer, throw in a random amount of whatever washing thing around, set an alarm on phone, throw it in the dryer, second alarm, take it to your usage pile(s). Turns laundry from tedious into barely a chore.

dirtbiker509 ,

I recently upgraded to the new GE all in one washer dryer. Removes a massive step of having to move clothes between dryer and washer. Toss em in, and 2 hours later they’re done. Best part is they can be tossed in before bed and ready in the morning for work!

I love the pic of all engines the most. :)

Would probably use all fuel in 10 minutes, and be way too heavy to even take off.

Kissaki ,

be way too heavy to even take off

maybe the engines would take off by themselves

ProfessorProteus ,
@ProfessorProteus@lemmy.world avatar

This is just off the top of my head from a bit of experience in KSP, but depending on the thrust-to-weight ratio of the engines, it would probably be able to take off, but you’re right, it wouldn’t win any fuel economy awards.

Actually I doubt any material could stand that kind of wing loading, and the aerodynamics would probably be all kinds of fucked. Pretty apt analogy for a beginner developer.
