@DessertStorms@kbin.social avatar

He earned entry to law school, won elected office in San Francisco and was featured in sympathetic coverage by national media outlets including ABC and USA Today, who allowed him to explain how his life was nearly ruined due to women making false allegations against him

It's not enough that we don't believe women, but then instead platform potential sex pests (at the very least) for being accused of sex crimes. The epitome of rape culture, that leads to the deaths and abuse of countless women.

E: while my initial comment stands, the more I read about this guy, the worse it gets - he had stalked an ex (and was abusing his wife who he later murdered), and was barred from campus, but at least one of the women he claimed falsely accused him leading to the expulsion didn't even know what he was talking about.
He's basically fighting windmills of his own making in an attempt to deflect from his own behaviour, like so many abusers do, but he definitely took it to the next level with a publicity tour and being poster boy for MRAs.
The sad reality is that Rachel might have been saved if we didn't exist in a world that ignores all of the warning signs of gendered violence.

ram OP , (edited ) in Man who shot YouTuber on video at Dulles Town Center found not guilty by jury
@ram@bookwormstory.social avatar

I’m glad he got off on the first two charges, but his lawyer argues that the third charge, “shooting in an occupied dwelling” shouldn’t be applicable since it was deemed self defence. The judge will be hearing arguments for this next month.^[newsio.com/…/alan-colie-man-who-shot-youtube-pran…]

Also, dude’s now spent 6 months in jail, only to be found not guilty of at least 2/3rds of the charges. Is there any compensation he’ll get for those missing months of his life? He’s already been punished, and yet he’s still presumed innocent.

30mag ,

Is there any compensation he’ll get for those missing months of his life?

If he files a lawsuit, maybe.

Endorkend ,
@Endorkend@kbin.social avatar

He'd probably need to file a suit against the state or the YouTuber.

If he's only cleared on 2/3 charges in the end, they'll just slap a minimum of 6 months on him and call it time served.

He probably doesn't have a leg to stand on suing the YouTuber if only cleared on 2/3 charges.

If he is cleared of all charges, he can sue the pants of both.

But lawsuits are expensive.

Frozengyro ,

Colie’s defense attorney, Adam Pouilliard, said the conviction on the firearms charge is inconsistent with the law, given Colie’s acquittal on self-defense grounds. He asked the judge to set aside the conviction. A judge will hear arguments on the issue at a hearing next month.

SatansMaggotyCumFart ,

That’s why in most places only hollow point bullets are legal for self defence. They are designed to mushroom out and break up when they hit something. This makes them ideal self defence rounds for 2 reasons. They have a ton more stopping power against an unarmored tarket (odds are your mugger isn’t wearing kevlar). Aditionally they usually don’t really survive going through walls. Even just sheet rock walls are usually enough to completely kill the momentum of any fragments that might make it though. If you use FMJ rounds for self defence then you’re going to catch a completely different charge.

meco03211 ,

No no. You can defend yourself with a gun indoors. You just can’t shoot it. Perhaps a pistol whipping?

phx ,

More that the nature of the indoors location had an increased likelihood of hitting a innocent bystander.

Maybe you’re more justified in somebody if it’s a 2-on-1 situation and you feel like your life is threatened, but pull out a gun and start blasting and you also put the lives of anyone within a certain distance around your target in danger.

Given the lack of apparent weapons on the “assailants”, drawing on them might have been sufficient to disengage and assess without actually needing to fire the weapon at all

What frustrates me is schools are frequently very willing to spend money on sports related expenses. A librarian left a a New Hampshire school $4 million dollars. They spent $100,000 on the library and $1 million on a new scoreboard (source) In the vast majority of states the highest paid employee is a football coach (source). Local governments don’t really care about education and because local governments are typically elected to me that means American citizens don’t really care about education either.

The school you’re talking about is my alma mater, what they did is even worse then you describe.

That librarian was neurodivergent and left his savings to the university at which he worked with no specific restrictions.

The university execs wanted to use the money on sports, and directed the advancement department to create a narrative to support that decision. They found a mention he enjoyed watching sports at the nursing home during the last months of his life.

Close friends said he wasn’t interested in sports at all - he loved numbers and statistics, and at the end of his life at a nursing home the only numbers he could get to were baseball statistics. He couldn’t care less about the sport, he just liked the math.

UNH rewrote his life and personality to justify spending his gift on athletics.

I’m not sure how that fits in this discussion. We’re talking about how a donation was spent. If that donation can be used to generate a stream of money to be used instead of simply used up all at once, it’s advantageous to do so.

Salamendacious ,
@Salamendacious@lemmy.world avatar

I’ve heard that argument. I see the point at least a little. I personally don’t find it convincing. If game attendance is high enough it should be able to fund itself. If it isn’t then I believe those monies could be more productive elsewhere.

Here’s some of my most recent ones, they piss me off:

  • One useless parasite who hasn’t done any work in 15 years is on the payroll at $300K/year. Literally did no work for years. That person’s work now consists of organizing meetings (no more than 1 per week, often with months of no activity).
  • Similarly, one person who retired 10 years ago is still paid quarter time, which works out to about $120K/year. His sole activity is attending meetings once every few months.
  • Routine “housing allowances” paid to higher ups. $100K for a mortgage went to a completely worthless individual.
  • Higher ups expensing dinners for themselves with literally $200 bottles of wine. Any fucking occasion, gotta throw a party - “retirements”, someone joining, someone leaving, fucking birthdays, so-and-so won an award, etc.
  • edit: nepotism. Oh my fuck, the nepotism. Hire so-and-so’s spouse as a “consultant” when I myself could have done the work for no extra money and 1/50th the time. But no, let’s waste $60K on a worthless consultant that has no goddamn domain knowledge and possibly fewer than 3 firing neurons.

It comes down to flagrant elitism and rampant entitlement. “We deserve it because we’re so fucking awesome”. And it gets worse than what I’ve written here. I manage a fucking nonprofit that’s supposed to help people in dire need, people who will die without us.

Salamendacious ,

    1990: Hey, watch the Lion King, buy a tshirt, buy a mug, buy bedsheets, come to the park, we buy all the other studios in your interest!

    2000: Hey, fat mice here, buy more of our home media that you can resell or share! Buy More Shirts! Pay us at the parks! We now work closely with FOX. See Nemo, buy all the merchandise! We merge with Citadel Broadcasting. We also bought Marvel. Suck it. Please feed the Mice!

    2010: Hey Chinese, come to Shanghai Disney Resort! We made Mulan for that! We also bought Lucasfilm so we can sell everyone more Starwars and Indiana Jones spinoffs! You do not have to come to the theater anymore, you can feed the mice via Disney+ from your home! I’snt that great?! Give us more of your money and time while owning less!

    2020: Hey watch our latest spinoff of a 30 year old IP while you can not own the media, you can not share our media and we increase the price without changing anything of the product – and you will like it! Feed the Mice or micky will come to your home and shank you and your family at night.
