brihuang95 , in Forget the ‘tripledemic.’ The U.S. is headed for a ‘syndemic’—and experts warn we’re not prepared
@brihuang95@sopuli.xyz avatar

But not all experts agree. It’s “premature to say it’s going to be a bad year here,” Dr. Michael Osterholm—director of the University of Minnesota’s Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy (CIDRAP)—recently told Fortune. While pathogens like flu and RSV peaked earlier than usual during last year’s so called “tripledemic,” the severity of the season “wasn’t beyond usual.” What’s more, low hospital bed capacity and staff levels were under-appreciated factors that contributed to the crisis, making it look worse than it was, he said.

Encouragingly, while U.S. rates of hospitalization from COVID, RSV, and flu combined are on the rise, they remain below levels seen this time of year during the past two years. Still, they’re significantly higher than those seen in the two winters prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.

RSV hospitalizations are the highest they’ve been since 2020, with the exception of last winter. And flu hospitalizations are the highest they’ve been at this time of year since 2017, when they were identical—also with the exception of last year.>>

I mean… isn’t that the big issue?

It isn’t that people are getting sick. It is that “too many” people are getting sick. Like, in a world with infinite ventilator beds and infinite medical professionals assigned to them, COVID would only have been a labor shortage.

The issue with a “tripledemic” is that it is multiple highly infectious viruses that target different demographics that very rapidly overwhelm healthcare. If there is less available healthcare then the amount of sick people doesn’t need to be as high. But it is still widespread death and “long covid” permanent injuries.

I have an academic background so I understand the importance for precision. But this is a perfect example of why the average scientist should never be allowed to talk to the news media.

Israel destroyed the internet and telephone infastructure in gaza so no one could communicate.

What air dropped maps are they supposed to follow and when are they supposed to follow them to not be killed indiscriminately? How did Israel make sure everyone had the current maps to ensure their safety from the bombing?

    porkins ,

Who would have thought that it would be tough to live in a warzone? Perhaps Hamas can provide them with updated maps and safe passage.

    mosiacmango ,

You said it was their fault for not going where Israel said to go, but now youre saying that Israel isn’t responsible for telling them where it’s safe to be? Which is it?

    Blumpkinhead ,

Where are the Palestinians getting updated maps from?

    porkins ,

One would hope that their chosen government would help find them safe passage.

    mosiacmango , (edited )

The local government is supposed to tell civilians where an invading army is going to bomb them when israel has purposely destroyed all telecommunications?

How would the local goverment know the invading armies plans? How would they communicate them to innocent families when all infastructure to do so was purposely destroyed?

    Blumpkinhead ,

Hamas won by a slim majority in 2006, was supposed to be part of a unity government with Fatah, who they then turned on and began murdering in 2007 and then took power by force. Many Gazans weren’t even born in 2006, nevermind old enough to vote.

Per the news story. The IDF provided leaflets mapping out safe zones. Hamas should have provided these to it’s people and provided safe passage.

And perfectly acceptable if you’re not a moron.

Reedy Creek is just Disney. It’s the Disney roads, the Disney fire department, the Disney sewers, and literally nothing else. Disney pays all the taxes, and up until DeSantis, Disney just told them what was in the best interest of the parks. Reedy Creek doesn’t serve anyone other than Disney, and doesn’t make any decisions that don’t affect Disney.

Of course the board was all Disney people. Who else would want the job? What other priorities would they have? The 18 other owners of undeveloped land that only has value because it’s next to Disney? The 50 some odd permanent residents who mostly work at Disney? The tourists visiting Disney?

The board would determine how much money they needed to keep the traffic lights on, and Disney would give them the money. Disney offered discounts and perks because it helped them attract high-quality administrators and civil servants.

There are many competing theories of government, how big it should be, what they should be responsible for, how they should determine how much to tax, and how those taxes should be spent. The Reedy Creek District was a rare example of ideal governance, because they had one constituent and one source of income, the mouse. No waste, no abuse, no corrpution because it was all out in the open. “We need to fix the road outside of Epcot.” Ok, that will cost exactly this much money. “Ok, here is exactly that amount of money.” It was a Republican wet dream, like if the Hoover Institute produced their own version of The West Wing.

It’s actually amazing that DeSantis managed to fuck it up that spectacularly. It took them a year to produce an 80 page report that tells everyone what we already knew because it wasn’t a secret.
