dogslayeggs , in Transgender Catholics say new Vatican document shows no understanding of their lives

I’m shocked, shocked I say, that the people who live in their own religious state that is walled off from the world and has been there for a thousand years don’t have an understanding of the lives of modern people.

RatBin ,

Walled off…? You really need to see for yourself the true extent of the vatican kingdom, not counting its history and the meaning of it. I’ll go as far as saying that as long as there is a Catholic institution somewhere in the world, that is where the subtle power of the vatican goes.

homesweethomeMrL ,

Very nice art though. Some of the best, really.

Carrolade , in Chicago Officials Confirm Tuberculosis Cases At Migrant Shelters

An estimated one quarter of people have latent Mycobacterium tuberculosis present in their bodies. A healthy immune system is able to suppress it, but high stress and poor conditions can give it a chance to cause illness.

GiddyGap , in Christian nationalists embrace Trump as their savior – will they be his?

Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves.

Romans 13: 1-2

Except, of course, when that authority is a Democrat. Then just skip all that and rebel.

On the other hand, if it is an AI, then we’ve finally discovered an AI with sentience, because only something like a human could be this stupid.

ShittyBeatlesFCPres , in The polls are suggesting a huge shift in the electorate. Are they right? | Politico

I would guess actual polling error or “polling error” based on the fact that campaigning really hasn’t started in earnest. (Biden is still hiring senior staff in Pennsylvania and Trump hasn’t even opened an office there yet.) We should probably expect polling to be all over the place before late September or so, especially with cross-tabs and the tiny sample sizes. Barely anyone is spending the money for high quality polls yet (except maybe the campaigns but they don’t release those).

It’s obvious that there’s real anger about the Gaza war crimes and inflation (which no president controls but people think they do). But a lot of young people are genuinely undecided. If it’s your first or second presidential election, you inevitably make your mind up later than if you already have a party.

Cosmonauticus , in Nearly 9 in 10 Trans People in State Prisons Have Undergone Solitary Confinement

The primary reasons cited by those surveyed for their placement in solitary confinement were disciplinary infractions (47 percent).

To be fair I wouldn’t be surprised to see the cis prison population have these same numbers. Most punishment for practically any infraction in prison is solitary. To make it out of prison without solitary is no easy feat

thatKamGuy ,

I mean, all recent coverage seems to have been about Boeing planes…

…but stuff like this is likely more due to shoddy maintenance than production faults, right?

It’s just that everyone is hyper-vigilant currently for anything that goes wrong on a Boeing flight currently.

Fades ,

but stuff like this is likely more due to shoddy maintenance than production faults, right?

yes exactly. you nailed it of course, it’s the same thing like when you buy a car and then you see it everywhere. Human brain likes to connect patterns when possible so anything Boeing is like, ‘there they go again!’ when in reality it’s poor maintenance. Part of why Alaska Airlines has looked real bad with all this stuff, bad maintenance like you said.

I used to think that then my brother shot a spoonful of salt in my eyes. I screamed bloody murder because I expected it to hurt and to get him in trouble for being an asshole, but surprisingly it didn’t hurt at all.

Turns out, yes, put salt in your eyes.

Sports isn’t an interest?

And again, as a portion of revenue, women are paid less than men. I’m not saying they need to be paid the same, but people here seem to purposely ignore the math

But I’m not sure how that comment is a response to mine. You’re defending mocking people who like sports because it’s a business?

Are video games an interest? Or no, because there’s profit involved? Going to the gym? Nope, just business ig?

bostonbananarama ,

I’m not saying they need to be paid the same, but people here seem to purposely ignore the math

Yes, you…you are the one ignoring the math. The WNBA has existed for 27 years and doesn’t make any money. In 2019 the WNBA brought in $60m, while the NBA brought in over $7b. In 2019 WNBA lost $10-12m. Can’t find a source on profit or loss newer than 2019.

WNBA is projecting $200m in 2023, NBA is at $10.5b. WNBA is improving, but not even in the same ballpark as the NBA. Also remember that there is a base cost to run the league, so the players can’t just take the same percentage. Their CBA has revenue sharing but they haven’t hit the metrics to trigger it.

I guess we’re not allowed to call basketball a child’s game, lol.

Lemmy mods are really competing with reddit for the most censored platform at this point.

Wrench ,

Agreed. Unless it’s something like porn or spam, I don’t see much point in removing it. Hiding by default should be the extent of filtering subjectively offensive words. Or just let the community hide it via downvotes.

I find the mods here to be too overbearing. I will block users myself if all they’re bringing to the table is “offensive” remarks.

MagicShel , in Vatican blasts gender-affirming surgery, surrogacy and gender theory as violations of human dignity

people must not tinker with that plan or try to “make oneself God.”

How fortunate it is that every single one of is sins and can all be forgiven, so we can just leave worrying about all that up to God, right? Right?

Or some shit. I’m an atheist, but I understand the myth better than most believers. Not that it matters because there is no logic or consistency anywhere in the doctrine, so why assume there is any in this edict?

EmpathicVagrant ,

god made light so why aren’t light bulbs playing god?

RatBin ,

There is sin and there are sins. One that can be forgiven, others that are not likely to…now switching gender isn’t on this list, and since there are animals thar do it on their own, I’d feel good about it. Also cursing the man isn’t a hige deal - but don’t do it - compared to cursing the Spirit. You want to live life accordingly, these comandements are probably the one christian way. By the way, the book of Exodus has many more rules which you can’t follow today, such as the burnt offerings. You’d break the law ny doing that in a normal place now. So do the other books of Moses. Have you carried a stick (read: working) on the seventh day? That’s also bad.

Modern society is by no means biblical and cannot afford to do so.

esc27 , in Vatican blasts gender-affirming surgery, surrogacy and gender theory as violations of human dignity

If “God created man and woman as biologically different” then who created all the different intersex people? Even if you ignore or dismiss trans people, there are other people whose sexual characteristics at birth were not so easily sorted into male or female, and others whose physical traits either don’t align with the basic understanding of “sex” chromosomes or whose chromosomes are different than XX and XY.

Logically, if God exists, then either their statement is wrong and He does make people whose gender is indeterminate, or there is another god who is also making people. Or perhaps He is not that involved in the process, and “God’s Plan” is more of a loose framework.

HopeOfTheGunblade ,
@HopeOfTheGunblade@kbin.social avatar

It distinguished between gender-affirming surgeries, which it rejected, and “genital abnormalities” that are present at birth or that develop later. Those abnormalities can be “resolved” with the help of health care professionals, it said.

Because of course it has the worse take. Why would the Catholic Church think consent was something that mattered?

RatBin ,

Maybe he just sprinkled some life and let evolution do the rest. Like, I’d do it if I were in that position. Like spores you know, to see hiw far your mostruosity can go against other monstruosities.
